One of the side-projects I'm pursuing is getting information back up on Nintendo's cancelled games. Obviously this is an area I could use some help with. Here's what I've got so far:
Game & Watch Tetris (rumoured to be the final G&W game)
Famicom / NES Donkey Kong no Ongaku Asobi (Donkey Kong's Music Lesson) Earthbound (US version of Mother) HeliFire (port of Arcade game) Return of Donkey Kong
Super Famicom / SNES StarFox 2
Nintendo 64 64 Wars (by Hudson, licensed by Nintendo) Dinosaur Planet Echo Delta Kirby's Air Ride Mini Racers
64DD Earthbound/Mother 3 Doubutsu Banchou (Animal Leader) Japan Pro Golfer 64 Modern Battle: Ultimate War various Mario Artist games
Gamecube Donkey Kong Racing Kameo: Elements of Power Kirby Tilt 'n' Tumble Raven Blade
Game Boy Color Densetsu no Starfy
Game Boy Advance Battland Diddy Kong Pilot Donkey Kong Coconut Crackers Game Boy Wars Advance (JP version) Luna Blaze
Virtual Boy Loads... but they're up in a temporary format already
Any more?

It's good to see you're putting these back up... I always like reading about cancelled games, for some reason.
Anyway, I was gonna suggest those Mario Artist games for the 64DD, but I just noticed you already had those on the list. I can't think of any else.

I want to put them up as detailed features if possible. I've done a test run on Kirby's Air Ride and it looks good. Don't know if it'll work quite as well for any games where there's no screenshots or very little information, but I may not give them their own pages, but relegate them to a subsection of the list. Oh, there's the NES version of Sim City of course... hmm... there has to be more in the SNES section, surely. And I know that N64 section is missing some, but I can't remember what off the top of my head. No worries... I have loads on them back on my computer, so expect some big-time work on them when I get that back. I enjoy reading about them as well. I guess it's an extension of the exciting wait before a game is released, coupled with the fact there's no chance anyone will play it. Like a little pocket of lost information that only the fans know about

Some more: NES: Sim City, Jump Burger SNES: N64: 1080 Snowboarding 2, Cabbage, Catroots, Climber, Fire Emblem 64, Pilotwings 64 2, Riqa, Super Mario 64 2, Wall Street 64DD: Mario Artist: Game Maker, Mario Artist: Graphical Message Maker, Mario Artist: Sound Maker, Mario Artist: Video Jockey Maker, Ura Zelda, Jungle Emperor Leo, Jack & Bean GBA: Pocket Music VB: Bound High, Dragon Hopper, Goldeneye 007, VB Mario Land, Zero Racers And more, I expect...
Oh, I will also be including a section under cancelled games for name changes. There's plenty of these:
Balloon Trip = Catch! Touch! Yoshi! F-Zero 64 = F-Zero X F-Zero GC/AC = F-Zero GX/AX Pocket Monster 64 = Pokemon Snap Super Mario Kart R = Mario Kart 64 Yoshi's Island 64 = Yoshi's Story StarFox 2/StarFox Armada = StarFox Assault Super Mario RPG 2 = Paper Mario and so on... so any help with those would be good. Older ones would be even better... as it's fairly easy to find them for GBA/GC releases.

Cool.
If you need screenshots, check out IGN, they often have screenshots for cancelled games as well.

I don't know if Nintendo made the unreleased NES version of Jungle Emperor Leo but here are some pics of it. It doesn't look very Nintendo but since the were making a N64 version I thought they might have been behind the NES version. I also did a post about Zelda II on the Super Famicom, on the Classic Nintendo board but I wasn't sure if it was a game or a demo. fryguy64.proboards27.com/index.cgi?board=classic&action=display&thread=1107380061

Both the NES and 64DD versions were based on a Japanese anime, so it wouldn't be too surprising if the earlier one had nothing to do with Nintendo at all. I saw the Zelda II... I'm going to have to look into that and see if anywhere has a bit more information.

Well, there is someone over at the Nsider forums that has an entire series about Lost GCN games. I guess I can provide the link: forums.nintendo.com/nintendo/board/message?board.id=nintendogamecube&message.id=329867&view=by_date_ascending&page=1That's the link to his latest game: Perfect Dark Zero. In the second post there are links to all the other Lost Games he's covered. There is also a special at the GameCube Advanced website that shows the entire history of F-Zero. There is a little info about Zero Racers. www.gc.advancedmn.com/article.php?artid=4063I don't know if any of that helps you or if you already know everything that was said, but I found it all to be pretty interesting. I'll try and see if I can find any other info. Oh, and will this include games that were meant to get released outside of Japan but never made it?

Aren't there probably more cancelled Arcade games than anything else?
What about the Popeye game Nintendo lost the rights to, which resulted in the hiring Miyamoto to start working on what would become Donkey Kong?

The Popeye game was planned but not made until King Syndicate saw the success of Donkey Kong. So it was delayed, not cancelled. I've not seen or heard of any more cancelled Nintendo arcade games. As for games that were announced in two regions, but only released in one, whether they get included depends on whether screenshots exist that prove the game was ever actually coming out there in the first place. A lot of sites claim games are "on their way" when they are nothing of the sort. Prime examples of games that WILL go in are Earthbound (NES), and both Game Boy Wars Advance and Game Boy Gallery 4 (both have Japanese screenshots, but neither were released... though GBWA has been "compiled" now). But I'm more interested in the games that were shown, with screenshots and info, and then cancelled. I'm working on the Mother 3 page

Ultra Zelda 64 was another cancelled game. Don't forget about that now. You mean Ura-Zelda? Yep, that's the Master Quest, and will be included even though it's finally been released on GC.

Doshin the Giant wasn't so much canceled for the US as it was forgotten.... but I remember! I am fairly certain it was announced for the US at least.

I don't think it was... Lots of games are reported on American sites from trade shows and such, but they don't usually get announced.

To add to the NES list, there is also Return of Donkey Kong. I recall reading in a very early Nintendo strategy book (I think it came out in late 1986 or early 1987, it definately pre-dated Nintendo Power) that contained a list of games that would be coming out in the future for the NES. Can't remember many of the games (I think it only listed five or so), but I do remember that one of those mentioned was Super Donkey Kong, in which you were supposedly able to take control of DK in a platformer-type game. In fact, the book referred to him as "Nintendo's most popular character", which he was at that time. I have to wonder if the game was really that far along (to the point that NOA knew gameplay details about it, this was before the days of the Internet and even game magazines, so you usually didn't know if something was coming out until it was on the shelf), or if NOA simply saw the name and got a small overview of it from NCL and based their preview on that. The book devoted more information to that game than any of the other upcoming titles, and it was definately written by Nintendo in-house, though I don't know who the publisher was. A shame that the book didn't have screens of any of the upcoming games, I would have loved to see what that game was going to look like.
