When Nintendo drops a project so as not to impact on the next game's sales, there tends not to be a massive 4-5 year gap in the middle.
I don't believe that Earthbound Zero was cancelled to prevent a drop in sales of Earthbound, because the SNES hadn't even been released in the US at the time... and more than likely Earthbound hadn't even been thought up.

All of those WERE MEANT for the NES. Some were released in Japan, it doesn't list unreleased Famicom games, and only some were totally never released.

Yeah, I think I'm getting a pretty good idea of which games were never released. I was surprised to see HeliFire on a Japanese cancelled Famicom page. I didn't think it did THAT well as an arcade game. There was also a Bowling game planned. I've got a pretty good Japanese resource for cancelled games

Man, I wonder HOW MANY unreleased Japanese Famicom games are there...although because of the format of that list, "License to Kill Tengen" is pretty funny.

I think's about 300 or so, NES has about 700 games. and the Famicom has 1000 or more, so yeah 300.

Have we forgotten the N64 version of Eternal Darkness? Or have I just forgotten...

I noticed on an n-sider.com article about some more axed titles... "Meanwhile, Nintendo's other second party studio Left Field Productions did deliver a basketball title however it was largely overshadowed by competitors. A sequel to 1080 Snowboarding was also being handled by Left Field but apparently the company and Nintendo couldn't agree and weren't satisfied with each other on the proper direction of the title. A sequel to Excitebike was also left in the closet. Nintendo officially concluded its relationship with the company in September 2002 and 1080 Avalanche, developed internally at NST, didn't appear for another two years. Then there's the infamous Retro Studios saga. The company was supposed to have four titles in development -- a Football game, an off-road racing title dubbed Thunder Rally, an epic RPG named Raven Blade, and Metroid Prime. Due to the incompetence of it's executives at managing their teams, three of the titles lagged behind in development and showed little progress. Those three titles were eventually cancelled in favor of salvaging Metroid Prime. And finally, we have Silicon Knights, a company who should've had its psychological-thriller Eternal Darkness ready for the November 2001 launch, but ultimately didn't have the product ready until June 2002." Man...Retro Studios should have released all of those.

About that preceding post:
Left Field delivered two basketball titles on the N64, one on the GBC and one on the Gamecube... the first N64 one was well-received, and while it may have been overshadowed by EA Sports titles (what isn't), it certainly didn't go unheard of... otherwise they wouldn't have produced so many sequels. 1080 Snowboarding 2 was in development, and I have made a note of it... but a second Excitebike title I have had confirmed from a reliable source was only in planning stages. Since leaving Nintendo, Left Field have developed and released a multi-platform motocross game that may have been planned to be a second Excitebike in its early days.
I knew about all of Retro's cancelled games, but I only have information on Raven Blade. I didn't know the title of the racing game... and I think hardly anything was released regarding the football title. Maybe we'll see some of the projects revived now Retro has gotten its act together.
Eternal Darkness was going to be one of the last N64 games, so it's no surprise that when it was suddenly swapped to GC that it wasn't ready for launch... same as Starfox Adventures, I suppose. It was swapped too late to be instantly transformed without churning out some old-style graphics. It worked for Animal Crossing, but I suspect it wouldn't work for everything.

No, console manufacturers never know what the last game title for their system is going to be. Maybe Nintendo intended for it (it being Dinosaur Planet, not the remake Starfox Adventures) to be the last game they would publish for the N64, but I've not heard or read that anywhere.
And I've said it before so I'll say it again... don't quote the entire post if you're only responding to a part of it. And remember you don't need to quote it AT ALL if you're responding to the post right before yours. Only quote if referring to an earlier post or if what you're saying is part of a long post.

Anyone remember The Legend of Zelda: Tetra's Trackers? That was announced but cancelled for the US.
