Since you're focussing on lesser known NES heroes, how bout the mysterious samurai from Nazo no Murasamejou? Speaking of which, anyone ever played that game? It's fun as hell. ;D

It's like a Zelda that doesn't use the part of your brain that solves puzzles. Stab throw nunchuk!
To clarify: I will be covering Nintendo characters. The first priority is game heroes, and I will only include characters that belong to Nintendo.
The NES set includes: Mario/Luigi (numerous) Donkey Kong Jr (Donkey Kong Jr.) Stanley (Donkey Kong 3) Tamagon (Devil World) Street Brawler (Urban Champion) Bubbles (Clu Clu Land) Balloon Fighter (Balloon Fight) Popo/Nana (Ice Climbers) Professor Hector (Stack-Up/Gyromite - will probably not do Professor Vector) Mach Rider (Mach Rider) Little Mac (Punch-Out!!) Ninten (Mother) Marth (Fire Emblem) Alm/Serika (Fire Emblem Gaiden) Toad/Peach (Super Mario Bros. 2) Kirby (Kirby's Adventure) Sukapon (Joy Mecha Fight) "Original" Link (The Legend of Zelda) Swordsman (Nazo no Murasamejou) Samus Aran (Metroid) Pit (Kid Icarus) Mr. Imagine/Lina/Mama/Papa (Dokidoki Panic) Donbe/Hikari (Shin Oni Ga Shima) Anata (Tantei Club) Chamu/Goku (Yuu Yuu Ki) The boy from "Time Twist" (need to research that one) Mr. Stevenson (Gumshoe) Mike Jones (StarTropics) Oh yeah, and I will probably do the Duck Hunt dog as well, even though technically he's not a hero (but is just as famous/notorious).
I think that should keep me busy for a while. Note that I'll probably get bored halfway through and start drawing any old character... but hey! That's kinda how the entire site is maintained! ;D

Do the Doki Doki Panic characters really belong to Nintendo? I thought they were another company's.

Not sure about the Dokidoki characters. If they were owned by anyone else it'd be Fujisanke (or specifically Fuji TV).
The characters may have been co-developed as the "Dream Factory" project was a Fuji/Nintendo thing. And clearly Fuji own none of the other characters in the game.
I shall research this phenomenon further.

I shall research this phenomenon further. From what I've found in the links below, it looks like Fuji TV owned the license and Nintendo bought the rights so that they could make the US version of SMB2. I don't know much about licenses and copyrights, but my guess is that these characters would fall under the same category as Thomas and Popeye. In other words, they aren't Nintendo creations, so they wouldn't get included in the list. www.nesplayer.com/features/doki/doki.htmwww.neschedda.com/mario2/doki/doki.htmlcheats.ign.com/objects/546/546768.htmlwww.nintendoland.com/home2.htm?funfacts/smb2doki.htmHope that helps.

From what I can tell, Nintendo and Fuji had a small partnership in the 80s. Nintendo developed some games using Fuji licenses (don't forget All Night Nippon Super Mario Bros.). Nintendo definitely developed Dokidoki Panic, they didn't buy the finished game from Fuji (as some of those websites suggest). For a start, Fuji TV never developed games. Fuji may have published it though, and I'll look more into that. They would also (I guess) have owned the licenses to the original characters. It's the oddball of the Famicom family, but I guess for now I'll scratch Mr. Imagine and co. off that list. Still... nothing to sniff at

Yeah, I thought it sounded a little odd that Fuji TV would be the actual developers of the game. It's not a big deal whether or not we know right now, you've got your work cut out for you with the rest of the characters on this list. ;D

It's not looking too bad actually. I just made a (near) full list of Nintendo heroes, and it's only a bit longer than that list (Nintendo likes recycling old characters it seems). However, I didn't make out full lists of "main team" characters in RPGs. They will, I expect, make the list much longer.

When I'm not doing other stuff. It's there as something for me to do when I'm low on site updates, or have a lot of drawings to hand.

Does the Swordsman from Nazo no Murasamejou have a name?

When I was looking up Disk System heroes he was only mentioned in the stories as a young swordsman (yes, I was looking at Japanese pages). So as far as I can tell, no, he's a mysterious nameless young man.
