Nobody really told me the whole plot. I have yet to actually play the game myself. I'm just repeating what people told me. They seemed to like things like that in the dialog, though.
I actually got a chance to play it today. Two minutes in in already felt like a half-assed version of Mario & Luigi. Roughly 2-3% of the Sonic fans I've observed actually love the game. The rest think it needs work. Maybe that sequel they promised us will actually be of professional quality.

It's that bad, huh? I figured that given the people working on it, that it would be a rare moment of Sonic games being good. He usually has better luck on handhelds.
That's what I thought too. But this is by far the worst Sonic game I have played. Worse even than the Traveller's Tales games of the late 90s! Here's a paste from a post I made on another forum after finishing it...
"All in all, what with the constant references the game makes to BioWare's website... I feel like they just threw this game together as a cheap way to hook some DS-playing kids into their games using a well-known brand."
After finishing the first chapter, the game stops you to tell you to go to BioWare's website. It'll also remind you occasionally after battles, and here is an actual transcript of the game's ending...
* Ship gets shot down. Tails: Wow! Do you believe that ending? Sonic: Seriously! It looks like we're done for! Tails: At the hands of Eggman, no less! I can't believe he'd turn on us like that! Sonic: Yeah. Surprise, surprise. Tails: My biggest concern is how he could have built up such an army so quickly. We weren't gone very long! Sonic: I didn't recognize the world when we got back. It looked as if we'd been gone for years! Tails: I'm sure we'll get to the bottom of things... if we manage to survive that crash! Sonic: Good point. I guess we'll have to wait for the next episode. Tails: What should we do in the meantime? Sonic: We could talk about the team that came up with this caper in the first place. Tails: That should kill some time! Great idea, Sonic! Sonic: Yeah, I know. Tails: This game was developed by BioWare. Did you know BioWare was founded by a pair of doctors? Sonic: Doctors AND game developers? No way! Tails: It's true! Dr. Greg Zeschuk is the President, and Dr. Ray Muzyka is the CEO of the studio. Sonic: Did these guys make the game themselves? It would take a pair of real mathletes like YOU to do that. Tails: No. They have a handheld group to do that for them. The handheld group is comprised of several departments.
They go on and on about BioWare for a while after that. They might as well have called the game "Sonic the Hedgehog Endorses BioWare Chronicles: The Brotherhood of Make Your Mom Buy BioWare Games".
I'm thinking I like my BioWare and Sonic seperate from now on, thanks, Sega. I have Mass Effect. I have Sonic Unleashed. Chronicles is like an unholy fusion of the two. A mutant bastard child that should be put down quickly.
Some of the codex entries about the characters and stuff are actually copied right off of Wikipedia, from what I understand. Can a game be that amateurish?
Here's a little project that someone* playing this game should do.
1) Count up all the Bioware mentions/references. 2) See how long it takes to play through the entire game (should be pretty easy) 3) Calculate the "Bioware mention per minute ratio" using steps 1) and 2).
* Not one of us, find someone from a Sonic fansite to do it.

nocturnal YL: It's my birthday in my timezone. I'm 35 now. This may be a bit morbid for a joke, but I've hit that midway checkpoint flag in my course of life. (Not implying anything about my lifespan; just that 35 is the start of mid-life by some broader definitions.)

nocturnal YL: About 30–40% into Atelier Escha & Logy DX. I didn't quite expect to see being overwhelmed by paperwork, coworkers with strong personalities and office politics as part of the story. All these against a backdrop of a dying world and attempts to mitigate it.

Nester the Lark: I decided to check in on Super Mario Maker before the servers go offline, and YL may be happy to know that his world record time on the final course I uploaded three years ago still stands.

nocturnal YL: A little more than a full day before the 3DS and Wii U online functionality shuts down. I may consider checking my Super Mario Maker and Fire Emblem Fates profiles, but I don't think I'll miss anything if I don't make it.

nocturnal YL: With Super Mario Maker, I tried to save good creations when I find those, but my save slots are only half full. I can't find any good online collection of good traditional-style courses; online communities are focused on high-difficulty ones.

nocturnal YL: Haven't touched my 3DS for a while. I'm surprised how lightweight it is.

nocturnal YL: So I started Super Mario Maker and started looking for courses I like. Turned out there are quite a lot, and now my Coursebot storage is full.

nocturnal YL: In terms of activity, there has been next to none across the Wii U and 3DS games I checked. Guess I really didn't miss out anything. Also I've refreshed the record in Nester's final Tetris-themed course. It now stands at 36 seconds.

nocturnal YL: Played a bit of Project Mirai DX since I was checking my 3DS anyway. My skills got rusty. I still get perfects easily, but now there are a lot of near-misses. Also got way worse at Reversi. Still very fun, as befitting my 2nd favourite game ever.

Nester the Lark: Toshihiro Kondo is going to be with NISA at Anime Expo in July. I wonder if they'll be making any announcements.

nocturnal YL: I don't know if it's me being spoiled by the much better presentation of the newer games, the "dying world with lots of bureaucracy" setting, general series fatigue, Ayesha's ghost still haunting me, or the Rorona-style format dragging down the pacing…

nocturnal YL: …but while I generally like Escha & Logy, it doesn't excite me. Character events don't happen often, and when they do they tend to fall short of my expectation. Logy has a troubled past for example, and it got revealed and resolved in a single cutscene.

nocturnal YL: I'll see if things will improve in the second half of the game. And all these made me look forward to Atelier Shallie. I know nothing about that game, but it gets rid of the time limit, which should give the player more control on story progression.

Nester the Lark: ^ I don't think I've seen that stage since I uploaded it. Trivia: The title "Tet-tot-rads" comes from the game Zoda's Revenge: StarTropics II. It's how an NPC in the Old West pronounces the word "tetrads," an old word for Tetris blocks.
