Remember the news a while back that Bioware is going to make a Sonic RPG? Well, Nintendo Power has a seven page story on it in this month's issue. Details are on the link at the bottom of the page. I'm not sure what to think. I was doubtful how well a Mario RPG would go, but it turned out great. Bioware has yet to turn out a truly horrible game. I am cautiously optimistic.

I am very well anticipating this game now. I wonder what the twist between Eggman and Sonic is supposed to be.

I have a good hunch about this game. If SEGa doesn't pressures Bioware this might turn to be one of the best Sonic games in a good time (besides most of Sonic´s portable games turned quite well.
My only worry its the story and original characters, Mario´s RPG´s turned so well because they didn't took themselves to serious but all of sonic games lately have been guilty of the opposite (but Bioware announced that they will try to bring robotnik´s back to being a respectable Bad guy and already announced that Big would be in)

I'm interested to see what ideas they have... but at the same time, I'm not really excited.
For me, and mostly everyone else on the planet.... Sonic was the best when it was just him, taking on Robotnik in a good vs. evil game that involved crazy worlds and absolutely no dialouge.
Sonic was a silent hero (kinda like most nintendo characters) who just did what was right. If Robotnik was up to no good, Sonic would run around weird stages and stop him. That's all there was to it.
Recent Sonic games have dialouge... story... and while usually that's a good thing, for me and many others it makes Sonic lose all of his appeal. You just can't take him seriously... but he really wants you to... and it just doesn't have the same charm. I think, even if the adventure titles... or Sonic heroes had the best gameplay in the world and were totally glitch free.... they still wouldn't have the same appeal the 16 bit games had, because of the supporting characters, cheesy cutscenes, butt-rock, and drama that just doesn't fit.
I miss the old days. Sonic was a much more likable character when he had his trademark attitude without having to say anything. So was Tails. It was more charming back then.
Anyway, my point is an RPG is the exact opposite of what the old games were about. It fits the new games... but everybody hates the new games and their lame stories and characters. "The Dark Brotherhood"..... right? I mean... do I even have to say anything? If it's like most RPGS, then I expect a super dramatic ending, plot twists, bad guys become good, romantic tension and.... oh... I swear, if they have to "kill god" or something at the end of the game....

It wasn't that Sonic was a more likeable character in the old days... it was that he was a blank slate, and people could imagine him as being whatever they wanted him to be. I know somebody who always saw him as a vicious, violent, angry bastard. And was quite disappointed to find that wasn't the case. I prefer the way things are now, with a large world full of characters to draw from, and actual connected storylines making the games feel like one long story rather than hundreds of unrelated ones. With the game quality taking the dip it has since the Sammy merger, I know I certainly wouldn't still be interested in Sonic if not for the stories. Like BioWare said, it's a rich universe, and one of the most interesting things is the history between the characters and the relationships they each have with each other. That's something Sonic Team have devoted a lot of attention to, even back in the early 90's. Besides, when they started making Sonic's personality more clear, he turned out being exactly as I'd always pictured him. He is, to me, one of the most lovable characters in gaming for his playfulness, free spirit and selflessness. I was very skeptical at first, but reading the interview with BioWare about it gave me a lot of confidence in their ability to handle the franchise. Sonic is a series of character-based stories. They focus entirely around character interaction and development, and BioWare seem to have looked extensively into that. They obviously know what they're doing here.

Here are all the info and screens so far...(Sorry for the long post) - Cover Story with nice artwork - In game graphics have a water color look, all hand drawn - 4 party members at a time - Each character can do certain things ex: Tails can float over things (standard stuff) - 11 party members total - 7 known are Sonic, Tails, Amy, Knuckles, Rouge, Shadow, Big the Cat - Control done fully with stylus - think Hourglass - Able to split party into teams at certain moments - Rings are used as currency - No random battles, see enemies on the field - Turn based battles [in 3D environment], choose commands for everyone in your party before they actually follow through. Want battles to be fast paced - Elite Beat Agents style special attacks - Team attacks (like Chrono Trigger) - “Fatigue Points” instead of MP - Choose which attributes to increase when you level up - Purchase and level special attacks - Bits of story - Sonic’s on vacation from defeating Eggman 2 years ago. Gets a call from Tails that Knuckles has been kidnapped by a group called the Marauders, and that 6 Chaos Emeralds are missing. Eggman not the main villain. But Bioware wants to make him a creditable bad guy again. Something about a “twist” between Eggman and Sonic that goes back to the earlier games. - 2 acts - first takes place in standard Sonic areas. 2nd takes place in a darker world - Remixed classic tunes - “fully animated cut scenes” - simple dialogue trees - Side quests

They even got a Movie trailer Guy sound-alike to voice it! Heh. That's not a sound-alike, that's Don LaFontaine, the movie trailer guy! And there was something special about hearing him say "Eggman" in his movie trailer voice.
