I am wondering where I could find Sakurai's journals that said he originally planned to replace Ness with Lucas in SSBM. Anyone know where I can find them?
Thanks!

I think we need just one more JPN-only character and at least one USA-only character to balance things out. Mike Jones FTW. StarTropics isn't US-Only. It was also released in Europe. Sadly, Zoda's Revenge (the sequel to StarTropics), was only released in the US.

Well, I still think he should be there.
If Mike's not US-only, who is?

I went to find the link, but the Japanese Nintendo website is having issues (or it could be our work server) Basically, you have to find Sakurai's SSBM blog. You can access it from the SSBM game page at www.nintendo.co.jp as well as the SSB page (where it was originally posted). Then look up characters, and then Ness. The info is in there. If the servers start working again I will repost the link.

Thanks! I found it and translated it. It really did say Sakurai originally wanted Ness to be replaced with the main character of Mother 3. That's Lucas, right? Or is Claus or Flint the main character?

I'm guessing he meant Lucas, but he didn't specify. Perhaps he was waiting to see who the main character was, like the rest of us

The only characters I don't expect to come back in SSBB would be:
1. Ness - replace with Lucas 2. Sheik - appears to be replaced with Zero Suit Samus 3. Jigglypuff - popularity in Japan has diminished since then so she has no more reason to stay 4. Dr. Mario - removed because his sole purpose (the music) is fulfilled in SSBM; hopefully be replaced with Lip to represent Nintendo puzzle games 5. Falco - intentionally made to be Fox's clone; replace with Krystal 6. Young Link - replace with Cel-Shaded Link 7. Pichu - replace with another purposely-weak character 8. Roy - removed because his sole purpose (the advertisement) is fulfilled in SSBM

If he had the same moveset, then he technically wouldn't be replaced, per se, just cosmetically changed. Personally I'd prefer it if they kept Ness but included Flint. That way we have representation of both Mother 2 and Mother 3.
I'd watch the trailer again if I were you, buddy. Zamus is actually quite different from Shiek. Her running animation looks awfully slow.
Is there any concrete proof of this? A lot of Smash players (myself included) would be pretty pissed if Jiggs was given the boot.
I love Doc, so the only reason I'd want him gone is if Mario's physics are redone, which they are, judging by the second trailer. I don't know if Lip will make it though, due to Mr.Sakurai wanting to move away from JPN-only characters.
WRONG. Falco can be easily given a new moveset, or, he can keep the old moveset if my theory about Fox being redesigned is true. I won't deny that Krystal is a good idea, though.
I'd prefer it if they still called him Young Link, and still kept a few of his old moves in addition to giving him new ones. Like a half-clone.
WRONG. Pichu is still popular. Plus, I don't think they made him weak on purpose. They can think of a way to balance him out, like changing him to the Pichu Bros. or something.
This is the only one I fully agree with. I'd kill to see Sigurd in there.

Falco was put as a clone due to StarFox\'s popularity.

I thought Falco was supposed to be there from the get-go, but was made into a clone to save time.

Cel-shaded Link would probably be called Wind Hero Link. Because, y'know, that's his name (the King of Red Lions calls him that when you're about the enter Hyrule for the last time.

Err... Pichu WAS included to be intentionally weak. Sakurai says as much himself.
Robert, we get that you want EVERYONE to stay EVER, but it's very unlikely to happen. We're going to lose Roy, easily. Shiek is almost definitely gone - yes ZS Samus is slower, but her moves are nearly identical.
Dr. Mario is a waste of space, Pichu is rubbish - it doesn't matter if you "like" them or not, they're crap and are likely to go.
I don't think we've seen the last of Falco, but I do think we've seen the last of "clone Falco".

Fry, how can you say that Zamus's moves are "nearly identical" to Shiek's if they've barely even shown any of them? We got to see three or four at most in the second trailer, and besides that, the only other thing we know is that she has a gun that can turn into a laser whip thing. Besides, Zamus's moves also looked slow compared to Shiek's.
Another thing wrong with your assumption is the way Shiek was part of what made Zelda unique, and giving that unique feature to a character like Samus, who isn't even known for that sort of thing, is one of the dumbest things they could do.
I thought Sakurai was out to please the fans, not alienate them!
It should also be noted that I'm not the only one who enjoys Pichu and Dr.Mario's presence in the game. The Smash community is far larger than you seem to realize, Fry.

Speaking without bias, Falco is immensely popular as far as the Star Fox franchise goes. It's because he doesn't need help as much as the other characters (with the exception of Assault, where Krystal actually needs the least saves) and he is an exceptional badass. As far as the whole Nintendo universe goes, he's a unique character; nobody else has his attitude or personality. Like Fry said, I don't think Falco's gone, rather he'll just be changed appropriately, alongside Fox, to be a unique fighter. Assault provided a ton of weapons that can be used by either character, and Krystal can unleash a set of moves using her Staff in her own right, so there's no shortage on all fronts.
Speaking with bias, we need Falco to balance out the sheer sexy-factor brought on by Zero Suit Samus. <3
