aaaaaaaaaaaAAAAAAAAA XD This is awesome! It opens so many possibilities...although I won't deny I was skeptical at the thought of a trainer being playable, this certainly makes things work!
What's cool about this is that you essentially have a wildcard fighter here; You could be fighting with a light-weight, speedy character (Squirtle) one moment, but a few moments later you've got to tangle with a heavyweight (Charizard). Meanwhile, Ivysaur balances the whole thing out...not to mention each character probably has their own moveset and stats.
I do believe we'd see different skins for the trainer (I imagine Red, Crystal, Ruby and Pearl--one from each generation, and a fair gender balance--because the ladytrainers deserve our love too), but the Pokémon wouldn't change. The moves would be programmed to fit the biology for the three we've seen so far, and I imagine they would fit the same cycle (1st form Water, 2nd form Grass, 3rd form Fire), so aligning them would be incredibly difficult. Not to mention the starters have different stats across generations, too--Infernape, for example, is incredibly light and speedy compared to Charizard, who's a powerhouse.

^ Aye agreed. Even if the trainers do come in different costumes, differentiating Pokemon is gonna be hard. Ice Climber and Zelda had a similar problem when you had multiples on a screen. Which Nana is mine? Did I transform into that Sheik or is that me over there?
Unless each costume just made all three Pokemon colored one uniform color.

Also, I disagree with all the Meowth/Team Rocket/general Gen1 talk. There are four generations of Pokémon...denying, say, Lucario for Meowth would be kind of silly. Especially since Red (because "Pokémon Trainer" is long-winded) makes four reps for Gen1 Pokémon across all three SSB games; already we have him and Pikachu, and Pokémon's history includes both what's new as well as what's old.
Already we've seen a lot of contemporary and old-school for the franchises released up to this point; of every modern franchise for which there's an abundance of information, Pokémon is the only one to be strictly old-school. (Mother and F-Zero are both...lacking in the info department.)
Not to mention that the newer generations of Pokémon tend to be much more colorful than the older ones, which has an overabundance of yellow- and cream-colored monsters. You know, soft, pastel stuff. Give us something bright blue, Nintendo!
Also, as far as alternate colors for the Pokémon that Red uses here...maybe they rotate the colors around? Regular colors, then red Squirtle, blue Ivysaur, green Charizard, followed my green Squirtle, red Ivysaur, blue Charizard...and then...I dunno. The Shiny versions? *shrug*

Sakurai....... W F T?
Possible the most suprising, stranges, and coolest character wrapped into one. It seems to wwork like Sheik, changing between forms, but now, you have Pokemon.. Squirtl is light and fast, Charizard is big and bulky, and Ivysaur is in the middle. Madness I say!
But, this proves he listens to the fans. Many have been clamoring for this for a while. I'm just sjhocked that A) He did it and B)how he did it.

...does Kirby get a hat for each of the Pokémon?
God, the more I think about this, the more giddy I get. XD
EDIT: Holy poo, how does Red play through Adventure mode?! XD I want this game so much now! The thoughts--the possibilities! It's awesome! I'm in love all over again!

It's hard to get used to this, huh? And I wonder why we only got info on the Down special move. Something that is true and I congratulate the early proposers of this idea for is the election of the starter Pokémon for this team. I mean, Kanto starters are like the very symbol of Pokémon battles. Mostly the evolved forms of them. If quadrupedal-only creatures can be playable, then imagine what other Nintendo characters can be introduced despite being quadrupedal-only. ... Will other Pokémon than Pikachu be really playable again? ^_^ What's inside his head really...

I think this update proves that Sakurai doesn't care if he is overrepresenting the 1st gen with Pikachu, Squirtle, Ivysaur, and Charizard as playable Pokemon so I don't see why not one more 1st gen Pokemon like Meowth would hurt.
I mean, if Jigglypuff and Mewtwo are in, that would mean 6 1st gen Pokemon who are playable so we might as well put Meowth in as the seventh playable 1st gen Pokemon.

My friend just made a good point. Typically, fighters appear in their most recent forms. Yet, this trainer is Red from FR/LG. Not the trainer from Diamond/Pearl. The trainer in Diamond/Pearl has the default name "Lucas." We can't have TWO people named Lucas now, can we?

That means: - Lucas from EarthBound may be in
- Lucas from Pokémon could still be in, since this guy is being left unnamed... Or will Red possibly be the only "avatar"?

Lucas from DP is not the most recent version of Red from... err... RGBY/FRLG... He's a different character entirely. That'd be like saying Marth shouldn't have been in SSBM because Roy was there. They did use the FRLG design though, rather than the original designs. So you could say the law holds!

He meant it for the former. But it's possible Red changes forms with his costumes. And Fry, he's called Pokemon Trainer. Not Red. Get a hold of yourself

I was actually pretty much against the idea of a human Pokemon character in the game, but I like the way they set this up.
Now, my only question: Will the three Pokemon get their own profiles for special moves/etc., or will everything be conglomerated into the one profile? (since the Pokemon Change article has it's own jump address, I'm thinking it's the latter)

On the website I imagine everything will be lumped into a single article. It's likely we won't see any other Special moves for the Trainer, but I imagine a Final Smash would be feasable.
Also, this marks the first time we've seen two Newcomer profiles in a single month. Again the pattern breaks! Damn you, Sakurai, for doing something different than what we're accustomed to! X(

I think this update proves a couple things...
1. A character does not have to walk on two legs to be in (Ivysaur)
2. A character does not have to fight to be in (Red aka Pokemon Trainer)
