As neat an idea as that is, it simply doesn't work out in a programming sense. Take Ivysaur for example; it's quadrupedal. Even if we forgo the alternate-evolutions for the RBYFRLG starters and stick with the same pattern (1st-Water, 2nd-Grass, 3rd-Fire) for the other generations of starters, you'd hit trouble with the third generation--where Grovyle is bipedal. Not to mention Ivysaur and Grovyle are much faster than Grotle and Bayleef, so it doesn't work out in a Pokémon sense, either. There's no way to make it work without cutting corners somewhere--and you know how Sakurai rolls. Cutting corners = bad for business.

4th gen would work I would think - Squirtle --> Piplup should work, Ivysaur --> Grotle would, Charizard --> Infernape.... maybe. Not out of the realms of possibility. Charizard's flight, if only handled minimally, should be able to be covered.
Other evos of the 1st line should work too.
I would like to see it if possible, but I don't see it happening, and who cares, really? Its still the best character so far.

Maybe they'd put Mewtwo, Jigglypuff and Pichu in as part of a Pokémon Trainer character. That'd be kind of silly, but it would clear room for more individual Pokémon from the later generations because they actually happened for chrissakes!

It's bad enough GSC won't get rep outside Pokeballs anymore, and that RSE got snubbed by losing Deoxys, but DP BETTER have Lucario

I think chances are that we aren't getting a 2nd, 3rd, or 4th gen rep. But, the reason may be that everyone knows the original pokemon. They have alwasy been the ones clamored for. For the new pokemon, people either can't decide on one, or just don't want one. i've heard Munchlax, Lucario, Pusle/Minun and God knows who else. There just aren't that many good new pokemon for Smash. None that are really definat and really represent the franchise. i think he's hit it with Pikachu, Jigglypuff, Mewtwo, and Pokemon Trainer. Not much else you need really.

Something tells me that the one character from the original 12 that got the ax is actually Jigglypuff. Didn't almost not make into Melee?

Either Jigglypuff or Ness. Ness was almost taken out of Brawl in favor of Lucas...but wasn't.

This isn't likely, but now that you mention another trainer, I wonder what other human character could be given the same role as "Pokémon Trainer" and by which name. "Pokémon Rival"? "Pokémon Champion"?

I still figure the only Pokemon to get the axe is Pichu, and Lucario joins the fray. He's faaaaarrr too popular to overlook.

She almost didn't, but Jiggly stayed because of MAD popularity. Melee actually made her a good character to play as too. Ness did nearly go in favour of Lucas, but stayed simply because Mother 3 was cancelled. So maybe Ness has gone? But maybe not if Sakurai doesn't want to include Japan-only characters.

Which, so far, has only one opponent: Devil. The inclusion of Ike over Marth is highly suspect, though.

I see Ike being in over Marth (at least Ike being known to be in at this point) could be considered to be against the chances of Lucas - Ike is international rather than Marth, so Ness would go in rather than Lucas - or for the chances of Lucas - Ike is new. Lucas is also -. So who knows?
I'm definitively siding with Lucas getting in as a starter character.... but maybe a revamped Ness as an unlockable?

Just change Lucas We need Ness with his PSI Rockin Final Smash, conflabbit!
