No way! The Pokémon Trainer has finally arrived. And it looks like he doesn’t do his fighting directly.
Instead, he uses the three Pokémon with him—Squirtle, Ivysaur, and Charizard—to do the fighting for him.======================================================The Pokémon Trainer watches from the background.Is... Is he issuing commands?!He needs to use his three Pokémon to fight. So the only ones who fight directly are the Pokémon.
I guess you could say using this character is like playing three for the price of one!
And the Pokémon Trainer uses a special move called Pokémon Change to switch between them.<Down Special Move: Pokémon change>Good job, Ivysaur! Come back! The returning Pokémon tags the next Pokémon.Charizard! I choose you! They swap out in a set order: Squirtle→Ivysaur→Charizard. They all share the same damage meter, so they don’t recover from damage during Pokémon Change. But they also have another stat, which you might call stamina.
If you keep fighting with the same Pokémon, or if you change them out too often, it’s not so good for the Pokémon.
If you want to be a good Pokémon Trainer, you’ll need to learn these kinds of ins and outs.

Damn, Charizard looks badass!
Note how the trainer is always standing in the background in the screenshots. Does that mean you will control the chosen Pokémon yourself? EDIT: Hah, I completely missed today's second update. My bad!

Is this where I get to laugh in the face of everyone who ever said a Trainer could never be playable? I TOLD YOU SO! But what the heck is wrong with Sakurai? Pokemon Trainer? It's clearly Red! Unless he has different costumes...Maybe the other starters, too...
I'd say this also raises the chances of a generic Animal Crossing character getting in.
And he needs to stop with the new character updates! I don't want any spoilers, but I can't stop myself from reading the updates for three months!

This... this is MADNESS! Brilliant... genius MADNESS!!
The "New Challenger Approaching" didn't load for ages, so I assumed this was an Assist Trophy or something. But a playable character? Who switches between three very nicely detailed Pokemon? This is barmy!
I've said this would make a good character since before SSBM was released. I had no idea how it would work, and it seems Sakurai has himself hit upon an unusual solution.
BLOODY GENIUS!

This is one of the best updates! Will Sakurai show all the secret characters on the Dojo? I hope not. I want it to be a suprise! Meta Knight and Snake haven't had their own section yet anyway. Does that mean you have got to unlock them? Anyway won't Sakurai have to make different move sets for each different pokemon? And how many characters are there now, including Peach who I think is confirmed playable? I don't know, but I'm lov 'n' it!

I never so this coming and never thought it would be possible to do.
Also we get some nice new shots of the Poke'mon Stadium stage. Looks like there is a giant screen in background like in SSBM.
If he fights with Squirtle, Ivysaur and Charizard, it does'nt look like we will fight with them in Poke Ball item form then.

I wonder how long it takes to switch Pokémon. Doing a Down+B right before one of those unavoidable Final Smashes might be a good way to, uh, avoid one.

If he fights with Squirtle, Ivysaur and Charizard, it does'nt look like we will fight with them in Poke Ball item form then. True, but don't forget there's been two generations of Starter Pokemon that can take their place since Melee, so it's not like he'll be struggling to replace them

I bet as soon as SSBB is released, CrappyCaptureDevice from YouTube will say something like:
In the Pokemon series, you get to carry up to six Pokemon with you wherever you go. In SSBB, Pokemon Trainer only has three.
AND
In SSBB, while switching Pokemon, they loose some health. They also share the same HP (health points). In the Pokemon series, they don't lose HP while being switched and they don't even share the same HP.
This character idea really freaked me out. I never did expect this to happen. This reminds me of Terry Bogard's pet monkey, Ukee (SNK's previous mascot before Terry), standing in the background while watching Terry fight.
I know he is Red, but Sakurai called him Pokemon Trainer, because he is generic and can be named yourself in Red/Fire Red and Blue/Leaf Green. His costumes might be other generic trainers from other Pokemon titles, like Blue, Gold, Silver, Ruby, Sapphire, etc.

I know he is Red, but Sakurai called him Pokemon Trainer, because he is generic and can be named yourself in Red/Fire Red and Blue/Leaf Green. Link and Ness also can be named. And they both come from series with new main characters for each game. This is even more annoying than "Ice Climbers."

Wow... Just wow.... This is one update that left me shocked and speechless.. The Subspace update surprised me but it didn't leave me shocked and speechless like Pokemon Trainer did. That was totally unexpected!!
Wow... Charizard is no longer a Pokeball Pokemon. Its finally a fighter! Guess it means no Blaziken after all. The "we need Blaziken to represent starter Pokemon" reason is gone now. Maybe Blaziken can replace Charizard in the Pokeballs?
This reminds me of that Melee poll results I found somewhere on the Nsider boards.
Mario Bros. 1. Bowser (169) 2. Peach (66) 3. Wario (65) 4. Toad (27) 5. Koopa Troopa (9) 6. Kamek (8) 7. Goomba (7) 8. Mallow (5) 9. Geno (5) 10. Baby Mario (3)
Pokemon 1. Mewtwo (35) 2. Mew (24) 3. Red (18) 4. Misc. Pokemon (12) 5. Lugia (11) 6. Meowth (8) 7. Raichu (7) 8. Marill (5) 9. Bulbasaur (5) 10. Togepi (5)
Legend of Zelda 1. Ganondorf (36) 2. Young Link (8) 3. Zelda (8) 4. Sheik (8) 5. Shadow Link (2)
Kirby Superstar 1. King Dedede (46) 2. Gooey (17) 3. Metaknight (11) 4. Misc. Kirby Companion (10) 5. Waddle Dee (3)
Mother 1. Mr.Saturn (18) 2. Poo (6) 3. Other Good Guys from Mother 2 (Earthbound) (4) 4. Paula (4) 5. Starman (3) 6. Jeff (3)
Star Fox 1. Falco (7) 2. Slippy (5) 3. Wolf (4) 4. Peppy (2)
Fire Emblem 1. Marth (21) 2. Misc. Character from Fire Emblem (18) 3. Ogma (8) 4. Serris (4) 5. Sigurd (2) 6. Leaf (2)
Rare 1. 007 James Bond (35) 2. Banjo & Kazooie (18) 3. Diddy Kong (15) 4. Blast Corps Robot (2) 5. 006 (2)
Other NES/SNES Characters 1. Sukapon (Joy Mech Fight) (15) 2. Lip (Panel de Pon) (9) 3. Richard (For the Frog the Bell Tolls) (8) 4. Metroid (6) 5. Foreman (from Wrecking Crew) (6) 6. Pit (5) 7. Donbe or Hikari (5) 7. Misc. Character (The Marvelous Bunch) (5) 8. Samurai Goro (4) 9. Popo and Nana (4) 10. Balloon Fighter (4)
Non-Nintendo 1. Chocobo (9) 2. Doraemon (7) 3. Bomberman (5) 4. Crash Bandicoot (4) 5. Sonic (3) 6. Megaman (3)
I am thinking maybe Meowth is the next best candidate for a newcomer after Red (aka Pokemon Trainer) from this Melee poll results. If Charizard upgraded from item to character, then maybe Meowth can, too. Or Sakurai might surprise us by giving us Team Rocket with Ekans, Koffing, and Meowth! You never know.
Oh, and I think I know what Pokemon Trainer's Final Smash is... Squirtle uses Hydro Cannon, Ivysaur uses Frenzy Plant, and Charizard uses Blast Burn. They were special moves from the Move Tutor in FireRed/LeafGreen.
Anyway, this is simply one of the most original and unique ideas for a character... I never thought a Pokemon Trainer would work so we would always get to play as the Pokemon. But it turns out I was both wrong and right. You play as the Pokemon for the Pokemon Trainer.
I agree with someone here who said this raises the chances of playing as a generic human Animal Crossing character. Tom Nook would be better, though. And what if C. Olimar could do the same like Pokemon Trainer does? He could command his Pikmin to do the fighting for him from the background.
