I think my point was just that the numbers he was giving were all feasible. They weren't something completely contrived--a lot of standing fan speculation can lead you to the same conclusions. So the man behind the theory wasn't so much important as the theory itself, because, well.. it made sense. But looking at today's update, I'm starting to think the starting roster is going to go even beyond 20. That's... insane. And sadly my girlfriend's place suffers from a disease known as "dial up," so getting online is hit or miss at best. One more day and I should be at least half moved into school (I'll definitely have my computer with its shiny new monitor hooked up), so back to good ol' T3 connections

I'm starting to think the starting roster is going to go even beyond 20. That's... insane. I just did a quick check on the FedEx calendar posted on a nearby wall here...if the "one character per week" average persists to the game's Japanese release date in late November, we could be looking at an additional thirteen characters in the starting roster. Now, that's just wishful thinking--but so far the average really holds out. Even though we had no character updates from the week of August 6 to August 10, the following week showed both Pokémon Trainer and Peach--so the average persists. The only thing that could offset the average as we know it is if boss characters like Petey get their own profile; the quota would still be getting filled, but we may not be able to play as those bosses even if they've got the profile. Get what I'm saying? So Sakurai might convert to alternating between playable and non-playable character profiles. That would bring us to maybe a starting roster of six or seven additional characters, which would put it at a nice even number of 24 or 25 total. I would really like those boss profiles, though...mmm-mmm.

And we have yet to see if all characters revealed until launch will be ready from start. I read somewhere that Sakurai was aiming for "same info for everyone everywhere" before launch. I'd rather be spoiled by Sakurai itself than a blurry screen made by someone.

You know what I'm starting to think? Sakurai never said we'd be getting these updates till the game launched. I'm getting this feeling that come the end of September or whatever, right after he's shown all the starter profiles (I'm thinking a starting roster of 21 or 22, not counting transformations), he's going to update with a Notice along the lines of "We are currently in the final stages of development, so I am going to stop updating the site until the game is on shelves".
Because a roster of 30-something starters? That is ridiculous and not going to happen. I kind of doubt an abundance of Boss Profiles as well, because I don't think Sakurai wants to spoil too much of Subspace Emissary for us before we even play it. And if he stops at the end of September, we still will have had four months straight of coverage on the game, most of it brand spanking new. I think that's plenty.

A quick thought on the number of characters: The Gamecube's disc was about half the size of a Wii disc. So, with that thought in mind, it is certainly concievable that the character count from Melee's 25 has doubled, depending on how much room the new additions take. I don't know about 30 starters, but I'd wager 40 - 50 total characters is a decent possibility.

Also, I can see Sakurai throwing in more third party chars than he promised...

My thoughts on all of this......
I would agree Tei that more characters is possible, and 25-26 total (with transforms) is likely. One thjat note, 40 is likely too. He's given uis so much, that I wouldn't doubt a hefty roster. But, I'll still say 30-35 is the best bet.
Also, I think he'll keep the site going for a while. On the Melee site, he reviled pretty much everything.l Look at it, and you'll see Sakurai has a lot left. Special moves, Final Smashes, Assist trophies, gameplay, music, game modes (like classic, break the targets, and the Subspace Emissary). He's got plenty left to talk about.

He didn't say that, you're right... but he didn't stop updating the SSB or Melee Dojos when development neared. I'm guessing the attention will shift. He'll show one or two secret characters just before launch. I also expect we'll get an abundance of Poke Ball and Assist Trophy updates.

Cutting off this incredibly simple hype source with a couple of months before launch, ie when all the big name games really start to trickle in, is stupid. If anything, I'm expecting it will be that time that we really see some updates get knocked up a notch - "oh no, Halo 3 is releasing tomorrow, hype is everywhere! Quick, announce online play!"
I'm thinking we will get characters probably averaging just over every second week, with maybe more if unlockable characters start to trickle in. However I think if the focus is shifting anywhere, its to the stages - they've been really under-represented lately.

I made that point about the updates a while ago, but whatever. Nobody listens My guess is that this was just a really good week, and that he'll start to fill us in on stages, assists, pokemon, and items over the final few. If you look at the Melee site, he had entire updates devoted to secret techniques, Pokemon attacks, ending screens, and other "trivial" stuff. So I don't doubt seeing more emphasis on those sorts of things as the release draws nearer. Though, the prospect of 50 characters sounds more feasible every day. How the hell much stuff is in this game?!
