If I ever get too bored, I'll study Japanese. The only thing I've learned in these years as a fan of Japanese-to-English merchandise is that romanizations are just temporary consensus until they officialize the names. In this discussion, I fail to see guesses; I only see consensus problems.
To my knowledge, -pon has been a suffix for robots in the past, hasn't it, someone?
If Nintendo localizers prefer to see the word "Sucker Punch" in it, then they'll probably translate this character's name as Suckerpunch or even Sucker Punch.

In a lot of cases, the English localizations are the same as the original Japanese with a few slight letter differences (NOT translations, because names can never be "translated"--you don't call a Korean kid in your class "Joe" because his name is "Kim"). Takamaru will stay Takamaru. Trust me. It's been used as a name many, many times in anime dubs and it's not very hard for an English speaker to say. Compare that to like... Fuchitigane. I think Fry is right though. You don't translate names. The only thing that will change is pronounciation. Example is the name "Baum". In German, you pronounce it Ba-um, with an "aum" sound at the end. It's a long u. But in English, it's pronounced "Bomb".
You would never translate a name, just how it's said. But since Japanese is very different from out language, we would spell how it sounds.
I don't know Parrothead, it seems your thinking too much into this.

whose name IS UNDENIABLY based on the VERY REAL ENGLISH PHRASE "Sucker Punch" wait, what? how is this in any way undeniable? as stated before, 'Sukapon' isn't even close to how 'Sucker Punch' would be rendered in Japanese. I do agree that 'Sukapon' is a better romanization of the name, though, because there's really no good reason at all to assume it's 'Skapon'. |

Okay... let's look at this again: SUKA / SKA = A genre of reggae music. PON = Common manga onomatopoeia for a "punch" sound effect. Yeah, that makes a crapload of sense  Stick with Sukapon. None of those translators are "better" than the others when it comes to translating names they don't recognise. The best one of them all is Jim Breen's Japanese-English Dictionary, but that simply ignores words it doesn't recognise, or makes a best guess of part of it occasionally. Why say Skapon? The second you say that, you make a misleading assumption about the pronunciation and origin of the name. And Wikipedia is not a great place to make misleading assumptions - they tend to get shot down. Joy Mech Fight is no different - what was wrong with Joy Mecha Fight? It's the name! Why is the A removed? That's not standard translation convention at all! I feel like I'm arguing with a brick wall. |

That doesn't make sense, but my fucking god how fucking boring is this fucking discussion in this fucking topic because not only does it fucking never stop and keeps fucking going around in fucking circles, but theres no fucking way of fucking knowing what the fuck the fucking correct fucking way of fucking spelling these fucking words is until something fucking tells us what the fuck the fucking name is. Stafy and DeMille are contemporary Japan-Only characters, and so is Lucas. Takamaru and Skapon are retro Japan-Only characters, and so is Marth.
Which is more important, contemporary characters for advertising new games, as well as gamers of today OR retro characters for supporting veterans, as well as history?

Thinkbeforeyouclick is correct. The correct spelling is "Sukapon", while the correct pronunciation is "Skah-pon". If it was pronounced "Sou-kah-pon", it would look like this: スーカポン. However, it does not. Also, "s-u-k-a-p-o-n-n" is what you type on the Japanese keyboard for "スカポン."
Several other words that contain a "sou" or "sū" sound in their pronunciation are:
スープ means "soup"
スーパーマリオブラザーズ means "Super Mario Bros."
AND
スーツ means "suit" as in a kind of clothing
