Pure and utter lazyness would have been to not have assist trophies at all. Taking another look at those screenshots... I actually think Lakitu looks really cool. I've seen some Nsiders say they would rather not have Lyn, Goroh, and Deoxys at all than to have them as ATs...

Some Nsiders are morons, though.
And I use the term 'some' loosely. What I really mean is 'most'.

Hahahaha. Gotta love the word "some", great for calling someone out without being so specific.

It's not that bad... but I hope Lakitu shows up 3D in the SE.

Most NSiders haven't hit double digits yet. They're only posting on the internet because nobody will talk to them at recess.

Guys, if the team really wanted to be lazy, why didn't they just use the already existing 3D models for these characters? It's clearly a stylistic choice, not a "we don't want to make character models for these guys" one.

yeah, thores hit it right on the head.
it would've been just as easy for them to use the Excitebike trophy model from Melee, but I'm betting you guys wouldn't be crying OMG LAZY LAZY LAZY over it. where's the respect for style? :<

Well if you want to get technical.... it would have been much tougher to use the trophy model from melee because it would need to be animated.
That would have been alot more work than to just use sprites.
But that's beside the point... because I agree... it's not a matter of lazyness or lack of space, but just a design choice, and it's not even a big deal anyway.

And the Pokemon? No, I'm not happy when the models are low-poly and have not been updated. That is also lazy. But given the distance you usually see them at, they usually blend in. That's a laziness that covers the whole Pokémon franchise, though. The Gamecube games still used N64 models for all 1st and 2nd generation Pokémon. A lot of them were pretty high poly for N64 models anyway, but things like Kangaskhan and Tangela in particular looked awful next to newer things like Flygon. I wouldn't be surprised if they're still using the same tired old models on the Wii, too.

Am I the only one, who actually prefers both the Lakitu and Excitebike AT's in their retro 2D form? I think that they are better this way, than if they were in 3D.

I don't see this as a choice of style at all. I see it as a choice of not putting effort into it. Come on, how much more kickass would it have been if Lakitu and Excitebike and whoever else will get this lousy treatment were to appear in 3D? Especially since sprite models are so dated, NES ones in particular. I dunno about you all but I personally always had issues with the lack of color pallet for those things. Instead of "kickass" we get "wet ass." It's lame to the max. And Smashchu, I'd see your point about SPM's use of sprites if you only sometimes got sprites from using the Pal Pills or Super Star; but since the sprites are a guaranteed constant, and because Super Paper Mario is really not an epic game on the grand scheme of things, the situations really are not the same. No, you're actually part of a majority. Don't make the issue about you. Jesus.

I wait too long to reply to these things. So, this is cool! This gives the game a retro feel in some parts, as many have said already. But don't let Lakitu get you down! He's only on-screen temporarily this time! At least, I hope so.

That doesn't make any sense. So only 'non Epic' games get to make stylistic choices? And you can only make stylisitic choices if you can guarantee it will always show up? TEi's gone crazy. Stop talking like that or I'll have to take away your Falco privileges.

Tei W T F ? Really, that was almost as bad as "The internet is a series of tubes". Well, maybe I'm over exaggerating it, but...... I understand your dislike. That's fine. But you say it's lazy because you don't like it. It's lazy only because you feel 3D models would have been better. Despite that fact that5 it was clearly done to promote the "feel" of the older games, similar to Mushroom Kingdom. Also, Smash isn't allow to have them because it's epic. 1)Epic is relative to who your talking too and 2)Why does it matter. Why can't Brawl have sprites while Super Paper Mario has. Since when can an "epic" game not use that? Really, gg

For the record, SPM seems to have a much more "epic" RPG feel to it than most Mario games. But don't gang up on Tei. I think it's lazy because it IS lazy. Sure, it's a stylistic choice, sure, it means you can have loads of the sprites on screen at the same time, sure, it's going to appease some retro fans... But that doesn't change the fact that he's copied and pasted sprites. One of the things I love, and have always loved, about Smash is that he takes old and obscure things and updates them. He makes them look new and usually shinypants. How lazy it is depends on how many sprites he uses for Assists. I mean, it's funny having a Game & Watch stage, and a classic NES SMB stage... the SMB2 stage in Melee was disappointing for me, as we have never seen Sub-con as anything other than 2D, and I'd have loved to see how Sakurai pictured it updated. The sprite trophies were similarly disappointing. I can go on and on. Classic games are great, and for things like Tetris DS and WarioWare microgames where sprites are the stylistic choice do work out well. But that's not the stylistic choice Smash has. It makes the old look new, it breathes fresh life into the classics that might never have been updated... I love sprites, and they have their place. Similarly, I love 3D models, and they also have their place. This move just makes me think of the SMB2 stage in Melee... and how unimpressive I found it.
