Assist Trophies are trophies that come to the aid of the player that called them out.
But these may not always be solid objects...Th-they’re pixel art!And there are tons of pixels racing around!I think that in Smash, though, appearances are rarely what they seem.Just because they’re flat doesn’t mean you can take them lightly.By the way, there’s also an Assist Trophy for this guy.Lakitu and Spinies! He just tosses ‘em down, one after the other.

Yay, Lakitu! I totally called it in the Assist thread.
Also, I don't think anyone was really wanting "Excitebiker" as playable in the first place, but this update deconfirms him as well.

If 2-D means more and more Nintendo in the game, then I'm fine with this ^_^. A number of things can be expected now.
But, will Excitebike 64 stuff be always absent? I don't mean the graphics, but named characters and stuff like that.

Nice update. Its good to see thay put pixel art in the game. That should really simplify up creating 3-D AT's then. Just imagine having a 2-D metroid come flying down.
Fighting on Smashville at night looks pretty cool too.

There goes an idea for Captain Falcon's Smash move out the window.

If 2-D means more and more Nintendo in the game, then I'm fine with this ^_^. A number of things can be expected now. But, will Excitebike 64 stuff be always absent? I don't mean the graphics, but named characters and stuff like that. This might teach those people who think that flat and cel-shaded graphics would mess up SSBB. That question makes me want to say this: The original Wave Race for Game Boy, like the original Excitebike, has nameless Wave Racers, but it isn't as popular as or more popular than Wave Race 64 and Wave Race: Blue Storm. The Punch-Out!! arcades also starred a nameless playable boxer, but the arcade versions didn't become as popular as the home console versions. The NES versions became a lot more popular, because of several reasons. One of them is having a playable boxer, Little Mac. Later, the SNES version has another nameless boxer, which is one reason why fans of Punch-Out!! didn't enjoy it as much as the NES versions. However, the nameless boxer probably is Little Mac (or just Mac) due to the title being the sequel to the NES versions and Gabby Jay beating only one opponent: Glass Joe. Also, the nameless boxer from the arcade versions got his look changed from his original PO look, to his SPO arcade look, which is probably why SNES Mac looks different compared to NES Mac for some reason. Then came the Balloon Fight series. Like the Excitebike series, the Balloon Fight started with nameless characters, and then later got some named characters in Balloon Kid (Balloon Fight GB in Japan), which didn't succeed as well as the original Balloon Fight. Even though there are some named characters, like Balloon Fighter and Balloon Bird, but those are actually names of their occupations, not superhero-like names. Why? Because according to the Balloon Fighter trophy in SSBM, "The Balloon Fighter's name is unknown." Also, there is more than one Balloon Fighter, because according to the protagonist of the Game & Watch Balloon Fight's manual, he said "Hi, I'm a Balloon Man." Also, in the original Balloon Fight's two-player mode, there are two, different-colored Balloon Fighters.

This update disappoints me. It's a cop-out. Why couldn't they just render cute little 3D ones, like the awesome Excitebiker trophy in SSBM? Retro pixel art is way over-rated, and the fact there will be more than one pixel Assist is a huge disappointment. Save them for the retro-graphic stages... not for Assists....

Oh jesus this is both a letdown (for the same reasons Fry said--boo on pixel assists!) and a relief, because I was having this nightmare where they revealed Luigi, but the post wasn't an official one or even for a character--it was an Orange post and it just said "LUIGI SMASHES SNAKE" and it was a hoboload of pictures about Luigi fighting Snake to get revenge for Mario from when Snake broke Mario's neck in the SNake video yesterday. This means I can actually get some frigging sleep in the next two hours and forty minutes. Blaaaaaaargh.

Sweet! ATs in their 2-D NES forms! Well, looks like that oft-used stupid "the graphics don't fit!" argument is out of the window. Cel-shaded Young Link would be sweet as a playable character. Hey Boo, aren't you going to say "Sakurai 20, dumb fanboys 0" when the fans used that stupid argument about graphics not fitting in the game? I wonder what if Duck Hunt Dog is in Brawl as an AT in his NES sprite look! If I'm wrong about him being in his NES sprite look, I'd still be happy anyway. Maybe the update would be simply called "Duck Hunt" as it reenacts the original game... If I am right, you heard it from me first. Oh, yeah... I think it would be awesome if Donkey Kong was an AT, too.. Only he would be in his NES sprite look, as he throws endless barrels around. ;D I'm loving this game more and more.

I called Lakitu, too! I just didn't expect him to be in his NES sprite look! And like Sakurai said before on the official Melee website (in Japanese) that he considered Excitebike before settling on the Ice Climbers and he didn't choose Excitebike because he couldn't come up with a way to make Excitebike work as a fighter because he's always riding on his bike or something (what happened with Captain Falcon?) But anyway, he seems to be making up for leaving out stuff in Melee by putting what he wanted for Melee in Brawl.

I like this update. Now we can have classic Donkey Kong as an AT. Does this make Mr Game and Watch's chances higher or lower returning.

They're pixel style because they're more recognizable that way. Chances are Balloon Fighter will be an AT and he'll probably be 8-bit style aswell.

Nice. I like the look of them, and their actual functionality is pretty cool too.
EDIT: Would be cool if you could steal Lakitu's cloud.
