I think the words "until now" sound pretty certain. Sad but true.

Nice to see this finally get info finally get shown. It was also good for a change to see all 4 specials and some of his standard attacks at the same time.
Still . . . Poor poor Ness. But it's nice to see that they changed his standard special move now. It looks so much better and more usefull than Ness's PK Flash. This also finally confirm's the Rope Snake as a grab. And that should really aid in recovery in those tricky spots (which was hindered by PK Thunder) and make him a ranged grab character like Link or Samus.

Just because Lucas's move set is quite similar to Ness's, doesn't mean that Ness will not appear in SSBB, according to this. Also, Ness might get a new move set.

Aw Ness. I have a feeling he'll appear as an Assist Trophy. Maybe if we're lucky, Lucas'll have a Ness alternate costume.

It is a bit sad update because it confirms that some characters will be cut after all and no matter if they appered in all Smash Bros games until now . Or maybe there is still a little hope for Ness - like Tei said they can give him some totally new moveset. It seems we will get a character update tomorrow - I think it's the last chance for Ness (you know maybe Sakurai posted Lucas special moves today to force everyone to think that Ness is gone, then next day he will tell us that Ness lives again... or maybe not ). EDIT: I just thought about something - maybe Sakurai surprise us all with playable Ninten .

Just because Lucas's move set is quite similar to Ness's, doesn't mean that Ness will not appear in SSBB, according to this. Also, Ness might get a new move set. lol @ wikipedia X ? discussion. Ness having a moveset based on PSI he actually learns is what I thought Lucas would be having. If Ness would be in with his own PSI, I wonder why Lucas' moveset borrows from Kumatora's PSI. Lucas and Ness pretty much learn the same moves afterall. I think that if Ness would be in, he would be the one still having PK Thunder/ Fire and Lucas would have a new moveset based on PSI he actually learns, which isn't the case. But Ness will no doubt be a (unlockable?) costume for Lucas.

Bye Ness, nice knowing you. I'm not surprised with this update at all. Sakurai wanted Lucas to replace Ness back in Melee but Mother 3 got canceled at the time. But now that Mother 3 is finally out, Ness is out.
But I'm glad Lucas retained most of Ness's regular moves with a few of his own. I loved playing as Ness only because I liked his fighting style. Which is why I am looking forward to play as Lucas. Love the snake rope! And PK Freeze seems like it works exactly like PK Flash, the only difference is that Lucas's actually freezes enemies.
As for the people saying Ness can still be in with a new moveset, well, Ness is out. Simple as that. Period. Sakurai already said so on this update. Ness was in the Smash Bros. series UNTIL NOW, meaning he is NOT in this game as a playable character.

Bye bye Ness little buddy. Although I didn't play as you that often, I'll still miss you.

It's very very likely to assume that Ness won't make his comeback as a character. But then again, it won't be the first time Sukurai surprises us.
Anyway, moveset looks cool.

Yeah, Sakurai must be lying on his website. Telling legions of Ness fanboys that Ness was in Smash Bros. series UNTIL NOW (implying that Ness was playable until now) and then pull a fast one by confirming Ness as a playable character. Yeah, maybe Meowth is really playable after all. Sakurai might surprise us.

no, 'up until now' does NOT automatically imply that Ness isn't in Brawl. it's a vague word choice, much like, uh, just about everything else Sakurai says about anything.
(I personally don't think Ness' chances are looking very good, but I'd like to be surprised.)

If Sakurai wanted to cut Ness already out in Melee, then so be it.
Also, the "up until now" could also mean up until now, as in "he's appeared in 64, Melee and Brawl" now!

To be fair, Arcadenik's point is pretty much almost just as valid, though - Sakurai hasn't outright stated that Meowth isn't playable either. Its just assumed. Which is pretty much the same case here. I mean, its worded vaguely enough that the Nesster COULD be back, but come on, seriously, is it likely? At all?
I'd say its near certain at this point that he's gone. Kaput. Finito.
