They hated him in Majora's Mask and that was way before Wind Waker even was thought up of. Nevertheless, Tingle is at least more important than Waluigi.

I disagree. Tingle has appeared in around five games and been playable once. Waluigi has appeared in more games than I care to count, and was playable in most, if not all of them. Waluigi may not have appeared in a major Mario game, but being a series with little to no story at the best of times, that's somewhat irrelevant.
Besides, Tingle only had a major story role in two of the many games he's appeared in. In all the others you could just as easily ignore him completely. Wario and Waluigi are generally the stars of what little story the Mario Sports games have.

Regardless, Tingle has a game series and Waluigi don't. So I'd say Tingle is more marketable than Waluigi. Plus the only games Waluigi is one of three main villians are Mario Tennis games. That's it. That's why he has the tennis racquet in his AT form.

That's why he has the tennis racquet in his AT form. No. The reason he has a tennis racket is because his first game was Mario Tennis. In that game he had a lot of personality. He was actually scary with his demonic laughs and glowing eyes, he was a feared character. Then he became a comic relief character in other sports games and party games. He was the fodder for (mostly Wario's) violence. He is a great character with personality equal to that of Tingle. Who is an ambiguously gay elf man-child. End of story.

Waluigi and Tingle are better than the entire roster of Brawl characters and Assist Trophies put together. And yes that includes Waluigi and quite possibly Tingle. PARADOX!

Waluigi and Tingle are better than every single video game character in existance, and yes that includes Waluigi and Tingle. PARADOX! Fix'd Tingle HAS to be a playable character!

Whew! The past couple days have been so busy that I only just now got to comment!
First: Waluigi looks fantastic. I mean it, he really does; it's amazing what a little more detail in the dungarees can do for one's appearance.
Second: The fact that Waluigi made it as an Assist Trophy is absolutely no surprise. He's a big enough Mario Character to get that far, but not big enough to really warrant being playable. (I still maintain Bowser Jr. will get that Fifth Spot as a member of the Mario cast.)
Third: I find it hilarious that this single entry by Sakurai/Nate Bilhdorf gave Waluigi more personalty than any full game has over the past ten-or-so years. Until this point, we only really knew three things: He's a villain, he hates Luigi, and he hangs out with Wario. Now we know he's also a very cruel kinda guy, which is actually very cool.
Fourth: Major props to Sakurai for the tennis racket! Hailing back to Waluigi's original appearance is great.
Overall, between this and Stafy, I approve of Friday's updates!

On the whole Tingle vs Waluigi thing:
Tingle has obviously been more important than Waluigi this whole time. Tingle has made mostly major appearances in titles in the main Zelda story, and has been in every Zelda game since his debut, with the exception of Twilight Princess and Link's Crossbow Training (he made a cameo in Phantom Hourglass). Waluigi has been in nothing but Mario spinoffs. He hasn't made a single appearance in a main Mario title. And just because the main titles have "little to no story", it doesn't change the fact that they are the most important in the franchise, and Waluigi has been completely absent for those titles.
Waluigi has gotten a major role in a small handful of opening FMVs of Mario sports spinoffs. I don't really see how that puts him above or even at the same level as Tingle, and I'd say that even before the guy got his own game.

Well, you can't say "Tingle is more popular because he's appeared in Zelda titles and Waluigi has only appeared in Mario spinoffs" because, has there ever really been a Zelda spinoff (not counting Crossbow Training)?
Besides, comparing Tingle to Waluigi is like comparing Chris Farley to David Spade. They are both awesome in their own, unique way.

Well, there have been a couple of Zelda spinoffs aside from Crossbow Training. They're all Tingle games.

I believe Four Swords Adventures would count as a spinoff game, too--and Tingle appeared very frequently in that.
Not to mention Tingle kinda was in Twilight Princess, as Aonuma confirmed the host of the STAR game in Hyrule Castle Town was supposed to be a realistic version of the dude.

Tingle appeared in Zelda spinoffs, as Waluigi appears in Mario spinoffs. I mean, I know Tingle has appeared in major Zelda games, but Waluigi has a large fanbase, I can see him appearing in a major Mario game sometime soon... or at least a Warioware game...

The games starred by Tingle have more weight.
Tingle is to Link like Wario is to Mario. Waluigi is like... David Jr.

Tingle appeared in Zelda spinoffs, as Waluigi appears in Mario spinoffs. What? Not only does that not make much sense, it wasn't your point. I thought your point was that my argument was invalid because Zelda spinoff games don't exist. Which isn't true. Tingle has made an appearance in some form in nearly every Zelda game since his inception, both main AND spinoff. Waluigi has appeared ONLY in spinoffs. Nobody's disputing whether or not Waluigi is popular. There's no doubt he is. But Tingle is more prominent/important/whatever in the Zelda franchise than Waluigi is in the Mario franchise. I find it odd that people educated in both franchises think otherwise.

Waluigi has had a fairly clear personality for ages, that would could see in the various FMVs and victory poses an whatever else.
