Okay, I cannot deny that I am FUCKING PISSED at Sakurai about Wolf. I mean, honestly, what the hell? I had really hoped that Sakurai would be sensible enough to make more ORIGINAL characters with ORIGINAL movesets, and realize that clones are a huge waste of space. But no, just no, he goes and throws in ANOTHER Fox clone, doesn't give Toon Link a very possible new moveset, and keeps Ganon as a Falcon clone GOD WHY IS HE STILL A FALCON CLONE?! I'm extremely disappointed.
Still...I did get Diddy, Dedede, Olimar, Pokemon Trainer, and Toon Link (who admittedly is still a clone...). We got the SSE (that better be as epic as I hope it is), stage builder, online battling, and plenty of neat modes...but...the game just feels kind of lackluster, now.
I'm definitely buying it, and playing it. I'll make my final judgements then...but I'm pretty disappointed.

I can't believe they choose to let G&W, Wolf and ROB be playable characters. Toon Link is acceptable, but Wolf? Nope... sorry, would rather have seen Demille, Krystal or maiby even Claus!!! Game & Watch and ROB are a LOAD more deserving than Demille, Krystal, or Claus. Wolf... is somewhat less deserving.

I don't think you should be complaining... Because there is really only two characters who COULD'VE been EASILY included... Ridley and Krystal, and the reason why neither were was probably because Ridley's too big and even Sakurai probably thought that 4 Starfox characters were pushing it. It's also good that both sat out for this one when the other possibility was a Charizard clone and yet another Fox clone. Ridley and Krystal both deserve more original movesets, and I figure that Krystal's complete absense as anything beyond a sticker suggests that like Diddy, she got left out at the last moment, and Wolf replaced her because they had time for a clone, and it makes more sense for Wolf to be a clone of Fox, than Krystal to be a clone of Fox. Ridley's probably the same way, only they put him into SSE early on.
Everyone else besides ROB were popular choices, unlike the fighters for Melee which included Dr. Mario and Roy.
ROB is just as historic for Nintendo as Mr. Game & Watch.
Lucario is PICHU'S replacement, not Mewtwo's! Mewtwo got bumped off for Pokemon Trainer, and Lucario merely inherited Mewtwo's better aspects. Pokemon may be popular, but it doesn't need more representatives than Mario.
Speaking of Mario, Mario would've lost a rep anyway if Dr. Mario returned, as the Dr. Mario Theme is on the Pictochat Stage, and thus Dr. Mario would've got the Nintendo DS as an icon. Geno is the most popular Mario Character and he is owned by Square Enix... The only other character possible is Bowser Jr and he has no chance once you realize that Baby Bowser has more of a chance due to Bowser Jr. being just like him and the need of another rep for the Yoshi Series.
Wars had no chance of representation because Snake took the only spot Wars COULD'VE had. Sakurai wants no real-world guns, remember? And that's what a Wars fighter would use.
Toon Link WAS one of the more popular characters on the poll, but I don't get where you expected him to be THAT MUCH different from Link. He IS Link, just from an alternate reality where Hyrule flooded. He'd of course have the Boomerang, Bomb, Hookshot, Arrow, and Spin Attack. Those are Link's iconic weapons!
Ganondorf still being a clone of Falcon is a darn shame, but it's not like anyone else got a completely new moveset, just modifications.
As for Fox, Falco & Wolf, and Ness & Lucas, it's not like Mother or Star Fox HAVE a variety in Moveset choices, and if Lucas wasn't going to get PK Love, then Ness wasn't going to get PK Rockin'. However, It IS a darn shame that Falco and Wolf also use the Landmaster, when Falco could've had the Arwing and Wolf could've had the Wolfen. What saddens me more is that Krystal in SSB4 will probably have the Landmaster as well, despite her having an otherwise original moveset.
The only really major complaint I have for this roster is not being able to select Zero Suit Samus from the start... They let you select which of Pokemon Trainer's Pokemon and if you start out as Sheik. What if I just want to play as Zero Suit Samus?

I wish you could've said something besides Snake stopping Wars from being in. Like... Sakurai just hating Wars. That always makes me feel better.
Actually, I kinda wish Wars got nothing. Like, no stickers and no trophies. That way I could imagine Sakurai doesn't know the series existed. And I'd be cool with that.

Watching a Wolf video, he's actually more like Luigi. None of his standard moves were the same as Fox or Falco. I wasn't able to see everything, but what I did (beyond specials) is he moves differently then Fox.
And that is one thing that came to mind. There are some clone characters, but they are more dramatic then that of Melee. Toon Link has quite a change in animations. Most of his moves seem to be instant. Only problem is that he is pretty much Y. Link. Wolf, on the other hand, is quite varied from Fox. He has a lot of moves not taken from Fox. Just the specials and FS. Even the former(s?) have distinct properties. Lucas is also like Wolf in that all his standard attacks are different. Not to mention Ness has PK Flash, not freeze (correct me if I'm wrong). The others are all old characters.
I agree with SAMaine. Besides Krystal and Ridley the roster nails all the big characters. In fact, those two would probably be the only ones you could really argue should (without a doubt) be in.

only three of the characters I anticipated making it in didn't: Krystal, Ridley and Megaman. Of those three, I was neutral on the first two; Krystal wasn't important so long as I got Falco (which I did), and Ridley was going to be in the game regardless (the fact that he's a boss is awesome enough, let alone one you face multiple times); I had enough time to springboard back from hearing that nobody had contacted Inafune about Megaman that it wasn't a big deal he didn't get in.
I got two of the three characters I really wanted, which were Falco and King Dedede, plus a lot of surprises in the meantime; the fact that clones are back doesn't upset me in the least, but it does make me WTF as to why characters were even removed in the first place...still, I'm not bothered by it, not at all.
Overall? Fucking fantastic roster. I couldn't have been happier with it. For everyone who's feeling like they've been ripped off, it's not like Sakurai effed you on purpose. A little less criticism and a little more joygasming; Brawl is going to rock your socks and roll your soul ;D

I think, for a lot of people, the game they imagined while speculating was so good that no matter what the final roster was, they'd be disappointed.
I wanted Ridley playable, but there was a time I was wishing and praying for Wario, Diddy Kong, and King Dedede in Smash Bros. It's been long enough that it's hard to remember that earlier excitement of their confirmations.

In the very beginning, I was almost certain that Goroh, Wolf, Ridley, Balloon Fighter and Mach Rider would make it in simply because they were prominently referenced in Melee (with the first three showing up in the intro while the other ones getting their own songs without an appearance). Goroh got Assist Trophy'd, Ridley got Boss'd, Wolf is playable, and there's still no hide nor seek of anything Balloon Fight or Mach Rider related.
Later on I decided I Wanted Takamaru for Japan-only and Mike Jones for US only, but it looks like Sakurai kept his word on there being less region-specific characters (this time there's only Marth, who we've seen before, and Lucas) and de-cloned clones. So that actually makes perfect sense.
In the end, I guess the real reason the way the game turned out the way it did was because Sakurai had so much freedom in making the game. They brought him back specifically for it's creation, and he pretty much dumped out everything in his bag of tricks all in one fell swoop.

I knew he'd add someone crazy, and that someone was ROB. I mean, it would be better to have a surprise then a characters everyone thought of. Also, thanks for the edit Fry. Good stuff.

To be honest, R.O.B. is better suited as the final unlockable character, not Wolf. I mean, what kind of surprise is that? "Guess what? The last surprise character is.... another Fox clone!"

It's possible that ROB is supposed to be unlocked last, only people didn't do that, you guys realize. Maybe Wolf is only unlockable via Classic mode or something.

Yeah, it's entirely possible that the requirement(s) to unlock ROB are "hardest" but whoever was playing through happened to unlock ROB before Wolf.
