Of course, he got dragged into this. Nintendo was going to turn Brawl into Melee Online with the same old characters... but Sakurai couldn't bear to see that happening so he got involved with Brawl. Maybe when Nintendo wants to make a new Smash game for the console after the Wii, Sakurai will feel compelled to take matters into his hands and improve upon Brawl because he couldn't bear to see SSB4 turn into Brawl 2.0.
Hopefully the characters who got cut in Brawl will be in like Krystal, Takamaru, Geno, and Animal Crosser (saying he isn't suitable for fighting yet making ROB a fighter? oh, please).

That what happened with 64 to Melee, and Melee to Brawl. I assume SSB4 will have characters left over who won't get in till SSB5. That's a dilemma you have when there are so many possible character choices.

That's what replacement characters and removed characters are for. They keep the roster count down.. remove the secondary characters and obscure characters who have had exposure for the last two or three games and replace them with newer characters who are secondary characters and obscure characters. Say, take Ness and Lucas.. maybe in SSB4, only Lucas will come back since Ness already had his day in the first three Smash games. Maybe replace Lucario with a brand-new overrated 5th gen Pokemon from a new Pokemon movie. Oh, and remove Falco and Wolf and add Krystal.

Why all this talk of "SSB4"?! It took Brawl nearly 7 years to come out after Melee. Let's wait awhile, shall we?

One way to put it in perspective though...
Melee had 13 newcomers added to the roster (Sheik makes 14).
Brawl has 14 newcomers added to the roster (Z-Samus + 2 Pokemon make 17).
So already it looks a little better. Sure it took out some characters. But it only left out clones except for Mewtwo - who is apparently Lucario now. Compounded to that, it only added -two- new clones. Melee, on the other hand, added Pichu, Ganondorf, Dr. Mario, Roy, Falco, and Young Link - that's six clones. So you could say...
Melee added 7 characters (plus Sheik for 8) Brawl added 12 characters (plus Z-Suit Samus and PT's two extra Pokemon for 15, minus Lucario for 14).
So basically, we got nearly twice as many newcomers. That's not bad at all, really.

Look - if it helps you anything, I'm sorry you didn't get who you wanted in the game and that I hope SSB4 delivers for you. But there seems to be a reason ROB was included for Brawl that the rest of us overlooked when we made arguments against the ilk of the Duck Hunt Dog:
ROB is a vital part of Nintendo history.
Because of ROB, the NES managed to sell units in the United States; sure, he only had two games, but those two games are what got Nintendo's foot in the second most important door they'd be selling to. In Japan, ROB is also something of an icon for the company, which explains why he's been making such a comeback lately (his most prominent returns being F-Zero GX and Mario Kart DS, before Brawl).
Sure, you could argue that the DHD was the best Zapper-related gimmick or what have you, but the Zapper doesn't have historical significance, neither does the DHD. So again: maybe SSB4 is where you'll hit it big. You're just gonna have to settle for playing Brawl for a decade or so in the meantime, dig? Jeez.

How do you make spoiler tags, Deadpool? The next comment I want to make is SSE related.
Trust me, you NEED to go through Subspace Emissary before you judge the entire roster, but we should have expected less important hidden characters when Sakurai said he didn't care about secrets.

for the record, I think an Animal Crossing character deserved to make the cut just as much as ROB did. Animal Crossing is enormous.
also, despite my objections to Wolf's inclusion, it's certainly not going to stop me from using him. hell, he might even turn out to be the first Starfox character I actually enjoy playing as!

I agree there. Wolf looks heavier and more powerful than Fox and Falco, who were too light and floaty for my tastes. Fox wasn't quite so bad in SSB64, but still not one of my regulars.
It's too late to complain about the roster now. We know the full character list, and we will have to live with it until the game is revived in some form in the future. I'm personally still hoping that the Mario Kart team makes a Smash Bros. Racing title ;D Don't need no Sakurai for that!

I kind of anticipate Wolf being the Ganondorf version of Fox. Which means for all me thinking his inclusion is rubbish, I could inevitably end up maining him. >.>

Wolf is actually fairly unique, so I'm not as embittered. His moves have lots of funk effects that Fox's do not, like the Reflector being able to "pulse" and thus being more of an attack than a defense, and his "Wolf Illusion" being a crazy slashing maneuver. He howls when he gets KO'd too. How is that not awesome?
It's not the characters that got in that bother me, because if you read the stuff I posted 2 years ago I wanted ROB, WW LInk, Falco, and all that jazz. But it's the characters, like many others, that did not make the cut that upset me. Most of this roster is pure win when you think about it, and I feel bad for being a baby about it. I finally got the return of Pit, Dedede and Wario finally hit the Smash Bros. stage, and Olimar looks sexy as all hell. But when you are surrounded by all these awesome, awesome successes, it's not difficult to expect even better things hiding around the corner. I guess we all got our hopes up way too far. Once I saw Geno was a potential, I grabbed it. Takamaru was the same way. And, in reality, neither are even mentioned in the game.
And so that's the way she goes. Smash Bros. Brawl is a perfect as Smash Bros. Brawl is, and we can't change that. Let's just enjoy the fact that we got a brand-new full-fledged 2D adventure game, a Stage Builder, and more music than we could have asked for. I'm content.

At a certain point you have to think:
Ridley and Takamaru in SSE out
Andy in Stage Builder out
Isaac in Stickers out
Krystal in Final Smashes out
Mike Jones in Hell freezes over
So for each character that didn't get in, I try to just think of what we got instead.

Heh, I wish Mike made it in, too.
I'm actually pleased that most of the clones are less...cloney this time around. Wolf and Falco have some major differences from Fox, Ganondorf is more his own character (shame they didn't build him from the ground up, though...but I'll live), Ness has different A moves and subtle B differences from Lucas, Marth and Ike are quite different...it's nice. And I would rather have them than lose any of the other awesome stuff Sakurai and Co. have put in Brawl. ^_^
