I used to think of him as Mario and the brown dude as Luigi. I guess this naive belief was influenced by seeing Lou Albano in the role of Mario for too long.

NES Open Tournament added, basically, blue and pink versions of the brothers, right? I remember one of them was Tony or something to that effect.
And I just figured the Golf guy was the "Golf Guy," who looked vaguely like Mario. I never once thought Mario was in games like Pinball, Wrecking Crew, etc. as a kid. I was a little dense.

The thing in Pinball is pretty blatant, seeing is how it's the exact same sprite from Donkey Kong, complete with having to save Pauline.
Wrecking Crew is even more blatant, because they refer to him as Mario in the game.

Here's the highly obscure cast of Mario Open Golf. It doesn't include Peach, Daisy or Donkey Kong, who all appear as well. Some of these guys might just be the most obscure Mario characters of all time! And this game is surprisingly poorly documented - even in Japan

Steve likely went on to become one of the golfers for Mario Golf. Hell, I bet they all did in some sense.
And yeah, like I said, Frog: I was a dense kid.

From what I can tell, only Mario, Luigi, Tony and Billy are in the Japanese version, although that game was so drastically different it may well have been that the other two were unlockables or something. I tried finding out, but like I said... it's really poorly documented! On the other games mentioned... In Golf you have two players. Player I wears a white shirt and Player II wears a red one. I was never convinced that this was actually Mario or even supposed to be Mario. Don't know why. In Golf: Japan Course you play as Mario and Luigi only (maximum of a 2-player game). In Golf: US Course you can play up to a 4-player game, but they all appear as colour changes of Mario (Player II is green, so presumably that's Luigi).

That's the only time they ever refer to the golfer as such, and the guide makes other errors, such as saying there's more than one princess in SMB.

Haha the theme song borrows an Ultraman trademark and the flying shapes and colors remind me of the Cutie Honey opening theme song from the 70's.

Haha the theme song borrows an Ultraman trademark and the flying shapes and colors remind me of the Cutie Honey opening theme song from the 70's. It reminds me of all those acid trips I was on during the 70's. Or it could've been last week...cocaine messes up my memory.
