About the brown and white Mario I would say that's more likely to be a reference to an early 1900s worker rather than spike.

In Melee, he was used in a King Kong pastiche event to simulate a 1933 worker. But that's like saying white Peach was supposed to be Nurse Peach, only without the game precedence.

Sorry to double post. Link's MElee red costume also doubles as the Shield spell from Zelda 2. In the Adventures of Link event where you fight Shadow Link, the player plays as Link in a red tunic. Since the only tunic variation in AoL is the Shield spell, the costume is used to simulate that. Could Bowser's third costume be in reference to Boom Boom? Compare: (Sorry, only sprite I can find:) item.slide.com/r/1/112/i/7niJwzv55D8hOzDHPUn7d5Ay-_7uY1kc/They're both tan skinned with brownish-red shells. The only thing I can't explain is the yellow hair. There's official art that shows off the similarities between skin color of the two. Granted, Bowser's looks more realistic but that's par for the course with Smash Bowser.

I would say that the Red Nana is a reference to...Santa Claus.

I really don't see that, Swedol. It's not really the same shade of red, Santa is like Coca Cola red, and Nana's red is lighter. Sonic's golden rings could be from Silver the Hedgehog: They're missing the Tron-esque blue lines, but 3D shots of his bracelets show that the line is an indentation. Can't find a good shot of it though. I'm more inclined to think they're rings, but this would make sense too. EDIT: farm4.static.flickr.com/3259/2532829659_8f86064019.jpg?v=0A perfect example, the bracelet on the right (his left) looks almost exactly like Sonic's rings.

Hey, it does.
Maybe the other gloves are nods to gloves and bracelets of supporting characters in other games?

Hey, it does. Maybe the other gloves are nods to gloves and bracelets of supporting characters in other games? I'm looking into it, and it shouldn't take to long since there's only a few dozen official sonic characters. So far, the only thing I've found remotely interesting is that Sonic's green rings look like Knuckles' socks: sonic.wikia.com/wiki/Image:Knuckles2006.pngBizarre, huh? Also, the black ones look like Charmy's cuffs: sonic.wikia.com/wiki/Image:Sonicchannel_charmy.pngI very much doubt these were intentional. EDIT: After some light research, I can say I don't think any of the others are based off of other characters.

Swiidol, sometimes I think you're on drugs Why do you say you hope it doesn't refer to that, it looks pretty spot on to me!

It's not the Japanese cover art, however. Fry will shoot it down. It does look like it though. Fry, if you don't mind me asking, why'd you take down the Fire Luigi from SMB3 suggestion for it when you revamped the OP? I don't think it was that big of a leap.

Swiidol, sometimes I think you're on drugs Why do you say you hope it doesn't refer to that, it looks pretty spot on to me! Here's the reasons: 1. It's an American Box art 2. It's Mario on the box art 3. It's not a main Mario game.

Here's the reasons: 1. It's an American Box art So...it's the sprite. It's not like it's drawn by American's, the sprite was made in Japan... 2. It's Mario on the box art Well then, let's take out Luigi's Waluigi costume. Luigi's never worn it.3. It's not a main Mario game. Like that matters to Smash Bros.My responses are in red.

Well, at any rate it's more likely than Flip's Balloon Fight idea. (Sorry Flip, no offense).

Thing is, the Pinball cover sprite isn't the ingame sprite. Pinball uses Donkey Kong's sprite. So, like all American covers, it was probably made here.
