Latest Update 27th July 2008
I've added in the SSB64 and Melee alts, and added some of the more interesting ideas. Also colour coded:
Red = Unidentified
Yellow = Discussions ongoing
Green = Confirmed / accepted
Mario
Red shirt/hat, blue dungarees
Mario colour scheme since the official artwork for Super Mario Bros. 2 (JP)
White shirt/hat, red dungarees
Fiery Mario - first used in the official artwork for Super Mario Bros. 3, and first used in-game in Super Mario World. The red and white colour scheme has been used since Super Mario Bros. with reversed shirt/dungaree colours.
Blue shirt/hat, red dungarees
Dojo SSB64 FC Mario Bros. boxart. The blue hat gives it away, although Mario's dungarees and shirt were this way round from his debut in Donkey Kong.
Yellow shirt/hat, purple dungarees, green shoes
Wario's colour scheme.
Black dungarees/hat, white shirt, blue shoes
In the SSBM guide I had assumed this was a version of the Foreman Spike outfit that appeared in SSB64, but that was brown dungarees/hat and yellow shirt. It has been suggested that this is simply an updated version of that original colour scheme, although now it looks nothing like Foreman Spike
Green shirt/hat, brown dungarees
Luigi's colour scheme from the Mario Bros. boxart.
Luigi
Green shirt/hat, blue dungarees
Standard Luigi colour scheme since the official artwork for Super Mario Bros. 2 (JP)
Orange shirt/hat, light blue dungarees
Pink shirt/hat, dark pink dungarees
It has been suggested this is based on Luigi's sprite from Wrecking Crew, where he wore red and pink.
Light blue shirt/hat, blue dungarees
It has been suggested that this is based on the American boxart for NES Mario Bros. While the colours match, I have high doubts that Sakurai would base anything on America-only sources.
White shirt/hat, green dungarees
Fiery Luigi's colour scheme first seen in Super Mario World. Luigi wore reversed white and green dungarees/shirt in the original Super Mario Bros. as well.
Purple shirt/hat, dark blue dungarees
Waluigi's colour scheme.
Peach
Pink dress
Standard Peach outfit since the official artwork for Super Mario Bros. Note: The full dress design wasn't seen until official artwork for Super Mario Bros. 2 (JP).
Yellow dress, brown hair
Princess Daisy's colour scheme from Super Mario Land.
Red dress
A new Brawl colour scheme, most likely based on Pauline from the original Donkey Kong, who wore a (torn) red dress in official artwork.
Light blue dress
Very likely to be Daisy's dress from the title screen for NES Open Tournament Golf.
Green dress
And this looks like Peach's dress from the title screen for NES Open Tournament Golf.
White dress
This costume has changed since its white & purple SSBM design. The best suggestion so far is the bridal dress she wears in Super Paper Mario. The dress is exactly right - but why has all the jewellery been changed to green and teal? In Super Paper Mario she wore red and blue.
It's not a NES sprite Peach reference. The colours don't match.
Bowser
Green shell/face, yellow skin, red hair
Standard Bowser colour scheme since official artwork for Super Mario Bros. 2 (JP).
Black shell/face, dark brown skin, red hair
Brown shell/face, tan skin, yellow hair
Blue shell/face, green skin, yellow hair
Bowser's colour scheme in the official artwork for Super Mario Bros.
White shell, black skin/face, orange hair
It's been suggested that the shell colour suggests Morton Koopa Jr. - but that's all that suggests it. The rest of the colours are wrong.
Orange shell/hair, brown skin/face
Donkey Kong
Brown fur, red tie
Standard DK colour scheme since Donkey Kong on GB.
Black fur, yellow tie
Donkey Kong Country player 2 had a yellow tie, but the fur didn't change colour. Still, it's the most likely reference.
In SSBM, black-fur DK had a light blue tie. So if the tie is a reference, that might help to explain why the fur is so different.
Red fur, blue tie
This colour scheme was used in the original SSB64 as well as multiplayer in Donkey Kong 64, although SSB64 predated DK64.
It has been suggested that it could also be based on the original Arcade Donkey Kong (whose fur was more reddish).
Blue fur, purple tie
This colour scheme was used in the original SSB64 as well as multiplayer in Donkey Kong 64, although SSB64 predated DK64.
Green fur, dark red tie
This colour scheme was used in the original SSB64 (with green skin) as well as multiplayer in Donkey Kong 64, although SSB64 predated DK64.
White fur, red tie
There was a white-furred yeti in the Donkey Kong TV series, Eddie the Mean Old Yeti. The show was aired in Japan and was quite popular. That was my first thought when I saw this new scheme, and other people seem to have had the same thought.
Diddy Kong
Red shirt/hat, brown fur
Standard Diddy Kong colour scheme since his debut in Donkey Kong Country.
Yellow shirt, white hat, brown fur
Player 2 in Donkey Kong Country would play as Diddy in a yellow vest and hat. The white hat is curious though, and suggests another source.
Pink shirt/hat, light brown fur
Dixie Kong's colour scheme.
Purple shirt/hat, black fur
Player 2 in Donkey Kong Country 2 wore dark purple, although there is also yellow trim on the vest, while the other colour schemes have little or no difference in the trim.
Green shirt/hat, orangey fur
Blue shirt/hat, brown fur
It has been suggested that this Diddy colour scheme matches Diddy's vehicles in Diddy Kong Racing.
Yoshi
Green, orange shoes
Standard Yoshi colours since his debut in Super Mario World. The orange shoes are actually closer to the original official artwork from Super Mario World than the bright red shoes he's usually depicted with.
Red, blue shoes
Red Yoshi from Super Mario World, although the blue shoes come from Yoshi's Island.
Blue, purple shoes
Blue Yoshi from Super Mario World, and the purple shoes were introduced in Yoshi's Island.
Yellow, green shoes
Yellow Yoshi from Super Mario World, and the green shoes were introduced in Yoshi's Island.
Pink, yellow shoes
Pink Yoshi from Yoshi's Island, although the shoes weren't yellow until Yoshi's Story.
Light Blue, purple shoes
Light Blue Yoshi from Yoshi's Island, but again the shoes weren't purple until Yoshi's Story.
Wario - WarioWare Outfit
Blue jacket, dark blue tee, yellow hat/gloves, pink trousers
Standard Wario design from the WarioWare games.
Red jacket, black tee, white hat/gloves/trousers
Orange jacket/hat, purple tee, light blue gloves/trousers
Wario's purple and yellow dungarees colour scheme.
Green jacket/hat/gloves, black tee/trousers
Black jacket/trousers, white tee, red gloves/hat
An interesting possibility is that this colour scheme could be referencing Booster from Super Mario RPG.
Light blue jacket/hat/trousers, white tee, black gloves
Wario - Dungarees
Yellow shirt/hat, purple dungarees
Standard Wario colour scheme since the official artwork for his debut in Super Mario Land 2.
Blue shirt, red hat/dungarees
Classic Mario colour scheme with reverse red and blue shirt/dungarees, first seen in the original Donkey Kong.
Pink shirt, light blue hat/dungarees
Likely referring to Wario's WarioWare colour scheme.
Green shirt/hat, brown dungarees
Mario has this colour scheme as well, which I suggested was Luigi's colours from the Mario Bros. FC official artwork.
Brown shirt, white hat/dungarees
It's been suggested that this is a reference to the Game Boy colours, although I suggest these colours match the Foreman Spike colours Mario wears in SSB64 (albeit reversed shirt/dungarees).
White shirt/hat, navy blue dungarees
This is clearly a sailor outfit. There is special colouring on the rim of the hat and the wrists of his gloves that none of the other outfits have - so I'm going for sailor suit.
Link
Green tunic
The famous green tunic originally seen in The Legend of Zelda (although this is obviously the Twilight Princess design).
Red tunic
The Goron Tunic from Ocarina of Time.
Blue tunic
The Zora Tunic from Ocarina of Time.
Light blue tunic
The colour your tunic turns when you collect the Blue Ring in the original The Legend of Zelda game.
Yellow tunic
A yellow tunic was going to be available in Ura-Zelda, an add-on for Ocarina of Time. It's the best we have at the moment.
Black tunic/skin, red eyes
Dark Link from Twilight Princess, but originally from Zelda 2: Adventure of Link.
Zelda / Shiek
Zelda - Purple & white dress, brown hair
Shiek - Blue & white
Standard Zelda outfit from Twilight Princess. The Shiek design was apparently a design rejected from the final cut of Twilight Princess.
Zelda - Red dress, brown hair
Shiek - Pink & red
Zelda's colour scheme in The Legend of Zelda.
Zelda - Blue & dark blue dress, brown hair
Shiek - Blue & dark blue, red facescarf
It's been suggested this colour scheme is related to Tetra from The Wind Waker, or relating to the blue and white dress from the artwork for A Link to the Past.
Zelda - Pink & white dress, blonde hair
Shiek - Blue, purple & white
Zelda's colour scheme used in Melee, also used in Ocarina of Time and A Link to the Past.
Zelda - Green & white dress, brown hair
Shiek - Teal & white, teal facescarf
Zelda - Black dress, white hair
Shiek - Black & white
Ganondorf
Black armour, red hair, red cape
Standard Ganondorf colour scheme from Twilight Princess.
Black armour, white hair, blue cape
Blue armour, red hair, purple cape
Green & yellow armour, red hair, teal cape
Red armour, red hair, red cape
Black & brown armour, red hair, white cape
Ganondorf's colour scheme from Ocarina of Time, as used in SSBM. The design on the cape also changes.
Toon/Young Link
Green tunic, light green sleeves
Standard Toon Link colour scheme as seen in The Wind Waker.
Red tunic, pink sleeves
Red Link from the Four Swords series.
Blue tunic, light blue sleeves
Blue Link from the Four Swords series.
Purple tunic, pink sleeves
Purple Link from the Four Swords series.
Green tunic, brown sleeves, dark hair
Link's outfit from The Legend of Zelda (the brown sleeves and hair).
Black tunic, grey sleeves, white hair
Shadow Link from Four Swords Adventures.
Samus
Red, orange & yellow suit
Standard Samus colour scheme, first used in Metroid, while the design is based on the Power Suit first seen in Metroid II.
Pink, blue & yellow suit
The Fusion Suit from Metroid Fusion.
Red, pink & yellow suit
Varia Suit colours as they appear in the original Metroid (the colours were changed in later games).
Dark brown & grey suit
Dark Suit from Metroid Prime 2.
Red, purple & yellow suit
Gravity Suit from Super Metroid.
Red, green & yellow suit
It's been suggested this is based on the slightly greenish tint the Super Metroid sprite has, but I'm not convinced at all.
Zero Suit Samus
Light blue suit
Standard Zero Suit from Metroid Zero Mission.
Dark blue suit
The darker Zero Suit as it appears in Metroid Prime 2.
Pink & red suit
Quite probably referring to Samus's leotard from the end of the original Metroid.
Black & blue suit
Again, this may be referring to Samus's leotard from the end of Super Metroid.
Purple & white suit
Yellow & green suit
Pit
White robes
Standard Pit colours, redesigned especially for Brawl.
Gold robes
Pink robes
Green robes
Light blue robes
All power-up colour schemes in the original Kid Icarus.
Black robes
Ice Climbers
Popo-Blue, Nana-Pink, brown gloves
Standard Ice Climbers colour scheme.
Popo-Light blue, Nana-Red, red gloves
Popo-Light blue, Nana-Light blue, green gloves
Popo-White, Nana-Black, yellow gloves
Popo-Green, Nana-Yellow, purple gloves
Popo-Blue gloves, Nana-pink gloves, white parkas
ROB
Red & cream
Standard Famicom Robot colours.
Grey & dark grey, ROB logo
American NES ROB colour scheme with American logo.
Gold & yellow
Pink & purple
It has been suggested this is the Super NES colour scheme... but only the American Super NES was a horrible purple colour - the rest of the world got an awesome grey box with colourful buttons. Why would Sakurai reference the US system and not, for example, any other Nintendo system?
I have a better theory - this is based on Nintendo's only other notable robot character Sukapon from Joy Mech Fight, who was predominantly pink with darker pink bits.
Black & blue
Green & brown
ROB Launcher in the Subspace Emissary uses this colour scheme.
Kirby
Pink
Standard Kirby colour scheme since the original (Japanese) artwork for Kirby's Dream Land.
Yellow
Player II Kirby, first seen in Kirby's Dream Course.
Blue
Ice Kirby, first seen in Kirby Super Star.
Red
Fire Kirby first seen in Kirby Super Star.
Green
Plasma Kirby first seen in Kirby Super Star.
Black & White
It's often suggested this was a reference to Kirby's Game Boy origins, and this does seem likely. Kirby's shoes have actually changed colour from Melee to Brawl as well.
On the other popular theory: the white Kirby on the cover of the American boxart for Kirby's Dream Land still had colour. And why would Sakurai reference American boxart?
Meta Knight
Blue body, black armour/cloak, purple shoes
Standard Meta Knight design - similar to Kirby's Adventure, but not really fleshed out until Kirby Super Star.
White body, white armour, gold cloak/shoes
Red body/armour/cloak, orange shoes/trim
An alternate Meta Knight colour scheme in Kirby Air Ride.
Green body, blue armour/cloak, brown shoes
An alternate Meta Knight colour scheme in Kirby Air Ride.
Black body, red eyes, black cloak, pink trim
Dark Meta Knight from Kirby & The Amazing Mirror.
Pink body/mask/cloak, purple armour, red shoes, pink & yellow trim
Marx from Kirby Super Star - one of my favourite costume references, as Marx is one of my favourite bosses of all time.
King Dedede
Red robes, cream outfit
Standard King Dedede design. I'm not sure when the colours were first decided, but he was first seen in colour in Kirby's Adventure official artwork.
Pink robes, white outfit, star-pattern belt
One of the alt colours in Kirby Air Ride. May also have been in Kirby 64.
Dark green robes, green outfit, backgammon-design belt
One of the alt colours in Kirby Air Ride. May also have been in Kirby 64.
Purple robes, pinky outfit, flower pattern belt
One of the alt colours in Kirby Air Ride. May also have been in Kirby 64.
White robes, blue outfit, hexagon pattern belt
Sepia tone
Possibly a Game Boy reference, although why would this be in sepia tone? The original Game Boy was four shades of green - or black and white. Despite suggestions that this refers to the manual, they tended to be more red and pink than sepia. KDL even had a custom colour scheme built in to the Game Boy Color, so it's not even that.
Olimar
Yellow suit, red buttons
Standard Olimar design from Pikmin.
White suit, red buttons
It's been suggested this is just a standard space suit colour scheme. I like this idea, and am happy with it, although it's not a cameo.
Note: Could this be Mario's space suit from Super Mario Land 2?
Red suit, black buttons
Gold suit, black buttons, tinted helmet
It's been said this is based on Olimar's company president who wears black with gold gloves. Although I'm not fond of this idea, as there's too many differences, and it doesn't explain the tinted helmet.
Green suit, white & red buttons
Could this be based on Olimar's son, who wears green?
Yellow suit, blue buttons
Louie's colour scheme from Pikmin 2.
Fox
Grey jacket, green clothes
Fox's Standard costume, first used in Star Fox 64 (Fox's clothes were orange in the original Star Fox).
Black jacket/clothes, red visor
Red jacket, maroon clothes, yellow visor
Green jacket, dark green clothes
Purple jacket, blue clothes
White jacket, white & green clothes
Note: I've checked Adventure, Assault and Command's artwork, and none of the above seem to be references. Where did these rumours begin?!
Falco
White jacket, reddy-orange clothes
The Falco colour scheme in use since the original Star Fox.
Yellow jacket, red clothes
This is closer to the colour scheme Falco wears in Melee.
Grey jacket, blue clothes
Red jacket, black clothes
Again, I assumed this was referencing Falco's all-red Star Fox Assault gear until I realised the same colour scheme was used in Melee.
Green jacket, black clothes
Brown jacket, black clothes, black feathers
Wolf
Blue jacket, silver armour, black trousers
Standard Wolf design since at least Star Fox Assault (is there any full-body artwork of him before that?)
Purple jacket, red armour, black trousers
Black jacket/armour, white trousers
Yellow jacket, green armour, black trousers
White jacket, blue armour, dark blue trousers
White & red jacket/armour, white trousers
Captain Falcon
Blue & orange clothes, yellow scarf, red helmet
Standard Captain Falcon outfit from F-Zero X.
Black & yellow clothes, orange scarf, red helmet
Costume used in this advert for F-Zero X in Japan. Why this? Well, because Sakurai said so on the SSB64 alt costumes page.
Red & purple clothes, orange scarf, purple helmet
Blood Falcon from F-Zero X.
Green & yellow clothes, pink scarf, orange helmet
Possibly referencing F-Zero X racer James McCloud.
Light blue & red clothes, white scarf, red helmet
Regularly suggested that this is Captain Falcon's Melee and F-Zero X colour scheme. But look at the alt colours for 64 and Melee, and look at his F-Zero X colour scheme.
Also, if these were his Melee colours... then why is this alt. costume ALSO available in Melee? And if the concern is making it less purple, compare them to the alts above!
White & pink clothes, yellow scarf, pink helmet
Jody Summer colour scheme.
Pikachu
Yellow
Standard Pikachu from the Pokemon series.
Red tint, red baseball cap
Pokemon Trainer hat from the original Pokemon official artwork (rather than the redesigned hat in FireRed/LeafGreen that Pokemon Trainer sports).
Red tinted Pikachu is also the "Shiny" colours.
Green tint, green bandana
Pokemon Trainer bandana from Pokemon Emerald (also seen in Ruby/Sapphire, but not green).
PS. I miss Pikachu's little Irish hat.
Yellow, blue pilot goggles
One of Pichu's alternate costumes in Super Smash Bros. Melee (does anyone know where this originally came from?).
Pokemon Trainer
Trainer - Red & White, black sleeves
Squirtle - Blue skin, brown shell
Ivysaur - Teal, pink bud
Charizard - Orange skin, blue wings
The standard Pokemon Trainer from FireRed/LeafGreen, and standard colours for all three Pokemon.
Trainer - Reverse red & white, red sleeves
Squirtle - Red tint skin, red shell
Ivysaur - Red tint, red bud
Charizard - Red tint, dark grey wings
The trainer is referencing the female trainer from FireRed/LeafGreen.
The Pokemon may just be red tinted, although it's been suggested that Squirtle's red shell references Blastoise, Charizard's dark red references Charmeleon, and Ivysaur's red bulb references Venusaur.
Trainer - Orange & grey, black sleeves, green hat/bag
Squirtle - Green tint skin, green shell
Ivysaur - Green tint, yellow bud
Charizard - Green tint, green wings
I thought the Trainer's orange top could be referencing Pokemon GSC's trainer, but in that case why is his hat green and his hair red?
Anyway, all three Pokemon appear in their Shiny forms here. Squirtle's green shell, Ivysaur's yellow bulb, and Charizard's dark green tiny are all Shiny forms.
Trainer - Blue & yellow, blue sleeves, grey bag
Squirtle - Blue tint skin, blue shell
Ivysaur - Blue tint, blue bud
Charizard - Blue tint, blue wings
Trainer - Brown & light brown
Squirtle - Pale tint skin, white shell
Ivysaur - Pale tint, white bud
Charizard - Pale tint, white wings
Another one everyone assumes is referencing Game Boy colours, but again, the Game Boy did not display sepia or brown!
Lucario
Blue, white fur
Standard Lucario colour scheme from Diamond/Pearl.
Purple, red fur
Unidentified
Light blue, light blue fur
Seems to be referencing Lucario's pre-evolution, Riolu.
Grey, white fur
Teal, green fur
The colours are the same as Shiny Lucario, but reversed...
Jigglypuff
Pink
Standard Jigglypuff from the Pokemon series.
Flower
White hat
From the Female Trainer in FireRed/LeafGreen.
Straw hat, green eyes, pale pink
The eyes and pale pink skin are from Shiny Jigglypuff.
Green sleeping cap
A Kirby cameo - when Kirby eats Noddy and uses the Sleep ability he gains a spotted green hat.
Marth
Light blue clothes, dark blue cloak
Standard Marth colours from Fire Emblem: Monshou no Nazo.
Black clothes, red cloak
Green clothes, dark green cloak
Black clothes, black cloak
White & blue clothes, white cloak with red inside
All signs point to Leaf from Fire Emblem: Trachia 776. Although it could also be referring to the boxart for the Fire Emblem anime (although this scheme only appears on the boxart).
Lighter blue clothes, lighter dark blue cloak
Closer to Marth's lighter colours in Monshou no Nazo's artwork, and the upcoming Fire Emblem DS.
Ike
Blue clothes, red cloak
Standard Ike colours from Path of Radiance.
Brown clothes, yellow cloak
It's suggested this could be Greil, Ike's father from Path of Radiance. Although there are a few too many colour problems for my liking.
Purple clothes, red cloak
White clothes, blue cloak
Green clothes, dark green cloak
Cream clothes, red cloak
Ness
Blue & yellow striped tee, red hat
Standard Ness colours from Earthbound.
White tee with red sleeves, white hat
Fuel from Mother 3 (a character clearly based on Ness's sprite).
Black & yellow striped tee, yellow hat
In the SSB64 alt. costumes page, Sakurai refers to this design as Hanshin Fan, after the Hanshin Tigers baseball team. While the team colours are black and white vertical stripes, fans often use black and yellow horizontal stripes to support them.
Orange & yellow striped tee, green hat
Purple & green-yellow striped tee, blue hat
Black tee with Mr. Saturn design, purple hat
This probably isn't a cameo, but an excuse to have a Mr. Saturn fan t-shirt.
Lucas
Orange & yellow striped tee
Standard Lucas colours from Mother 3.
Blue & yellow striped tee, orange hair
Klaus, Lucas's twin brother from Mother 3.
Red & dark red striped tee
Blue & white striped tee
Red & green striped tee
Pink & purple striped tee
Mr. Game & Watch
Black
Standard colour of LCD sprites in Game & Watch games.
Red
Yellow
Blue
Green
Light blue
I've bunched all these together. Basically, Parrothead suggests they are referring to the colours available in the SuperColor Game & Watch series - and I am inclined to agree with him.
Snake
Blue camo
Standard Snake from Metal Gear Solid.
Red & black pattern camo
Fire Camo from Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater.
Blue & grey camo
Blue & white camo
Could be the AUSCAM camo.
Green camo
Moss Camo or Snake camo from Metal Gear Solid 3.
Leopard print camo
Animal Camo from Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater.
Sonic
White gloves
Standard Sonic
Black wrist guards
Double yellow rings
Yeah, the rings might refer to the rings in the series, but why are they so chunky looking? Why not just use Sonic Rings?
Green wrist guards
Red wrist guards
Dr. Mario
White coat
Standard Dr. Mario colours.
Black coat
Green coat
Blue coat
Red coat
Pichu
Normal (no accessories)
Standard Pichu.
Red scarf, red tie around ear
Blue scarf, blue goggles
Green scarf, green backpack
Mewtwo
Pink & purple
Standard Mewtwo colours.
Yellow & orange
Mewtwo's original sprite colours.
Light blue & blue
Light green & green
Shiny Mewtwo colours.
Roy
Blue & gold armour, white trousers, blue & red cloak
Standard Roy colour scheme.
Red & gold armour, brown trousers, red & orange cloak
Blue & white armour, blue trousers, blue & yellow cloak
Green, brown & gold armour, white trousers, green & orange cloak
Yellow & gold armour, light blue trousers, red & white cloak
Note: It's been suggested some of Roy's colours could come from various soldiers and multiplayer modes in his game.
I've added in the SSB64 and Melee alts, and added some of the more interesting ideas. Also colour coded:
Red = Unidentified
Yellow = Discussions ongoing
Green = Confirmed / accepted
