Alternate Costumes

Normally I would scarf down a topic like this but I am so burned out and so ready to start drinking and fall asleep right now that all I'm going to say is this: if it quacks like a duck, it's a wizzleing duck. Don't be so apprehensive about saying such and such a costume is a reference. If the first impression for more than a handful of people is to say "Wow, that looks like Ocarina of Time Ganondorf," then it very well was meant to be wizzleing Ocarina of Time Ganondorf. We're all intelligent and well-played Nintendards here; I think we know what we are talking about in reference to the costumes in Brawl.

Also, Blue Peach and Green Peach are both from NES Open Tournament.

Just did a massive major buttwizzle of an update to the first post. I scoured the old topic for additions as well. I did leave out a few very suspect ones, but I tried to at least refer to any potential cameos, if not flat out agree with them. I also debunk a few - including my own.

And Flip, I had the same thought today about the blue dress, and it wasn't until I read your post in the old topic that I checked and saw it covered both unknown Peach costumes. Woop!

A few other notable updates:

• OMFG it's not Foreman Spike any more! Wario has that costume now. It also means the Melee guide was wrong.
  
• Everyone's gone insane regarding Star Fox. I've done a scour through official artwork for every game, and Fox has been wearing the same colours since Star Fox 64 (and before that he wore orange instead of green clothes under his jacket). All this "costume x is Adventures/Assault/Command" are demonstrably wrong. So shush.
  
• I've put a big question mark over anything that's "referring to origins on the Game Boy". Read through and you'll see why.
  
• Pink ROB... I have a new theory... ;D
  
• Marth's white costume is a point of contention. I'm sticking with Leaf simply because Marth only wears white on the boxart of the dub of the anime... I'd like to see the original Japanese boxart to see if it's the same.
  
• I've also put a big question mark over anything "referring to American boxart".

Firstly, Sonic's golden rings are, well, Rings from the Sonic series. He's never worn them like this, but that's what they are. They're golden rings on Sonic, after all.


It's been suggested Golden Link is in reference to the Darknut from the original LoZ. I can see it, but the question then becomes why?
I've also heard it may be in reference to the Magic Armor from TP.

As for Falcon's F-Zero X costume, check out his F-Zero X sticker in Brawl. It's different enough.

Note the collar's color, the lighter shade of blue in the clothes (They're not as purplish periwinkle as they appear. I think that's just the art style.), Falcon's red arm guards. His shoulder pads are white in ther art though. To me, it's close enough to be a reference.

All right, I know you're probably going to disregard this because it's SMRPG, but bear with me. Red Biker Wario has white gloves (white arm bands), red jacket (red shirt), black shirt (black pants...), and red fairy boots. Am I the only one who sees it?

The costume you have listed for Pokemon Trainer as

Trainer - Reverse red & white, red sleeves
Squirtle - Red tint skin, red shell
Ivysaur - Red tint, red bud
Charizard - Red tint, dark grey wings

is a reference to alternate evolutions. Squirtle is Blastoise (red shell, dark blue skin), Ivysaur is Venasaur (red bulb like the giant red flower), and Charizard is Charmeleon (dark red skin), and the Pokemon Trainer himself is a reference to the female trainer in Firered/Leafgreen. The other costume that has the light orange Charizard looks a lot like Charmander, and the blue shell Squirtle reminds me of Wartortle. The Ivysaur with the green bulb also looks like Bulbasaur.


The Lucario costume you listed as

Light blue, light blue fur

is a reference to Riolu.

The Jigglypuff costume with the flower might be referencing Phoebe of the Elite Four in Hoenn. (Though she had two flowers in her hair.)

With the following pictures I'm showing another theory to add on Link's golden costume, though it's way more metaphoric than the Magic Armor or the Darknut artwork.

Dark Link is specifically the one from TP. Otherwise he would be nothing but a shadow, as the one in Zelda 2 was SHADOW Link, not DARK Link as so many confuse it.

Also, Orange Wario Ware Wario is the Standard Wario colors (yellow/purple), or at least that's what we've always figured here in my circle.

Sonic - Golden Rings
Yes, that seems obvious, but they're actually solid, sharp-edged arm guards. Surely if they were making them to refer to the rings they would have just... you know... used Sonic Rings...?

So, it could be a reference to Darknut, or to the connection between Zelda and gold cartridges...
Frankly, both of these seem particularly stretch-worthy.

Green Trainer
Brendan from Pokemon Emerald wears a predominantly red and black top. His bag and headband is green and his hair is white.
Pokemon Trainer's costume is orange and grey with a green bag and hat and red hair. Some similarities, sure, but no more than, say, Pokemon Gold/Silver Trainer (which is my favoured explanation so far).
There's more to this than we're saying. There's something in the red hair - the other Trainer costumes have black hair (except Sepia Trainer), so there's something in that.

Falcon
The image doesn't work. And no, SSB64 Captain Falcon looks like Captain Falcon. And going back... it looks like Captain Falcon has the pale blue alt. colour in SSB64 as well (as one of his team colours).

Foreman Spike outfit
Not really... it's dark brown with brown shoes and a green hat, which is nothing like Mario's black and white with blue shoes outfit.

Wario - Booster Outfit
Why would I dismiss this for being SMRPG? It was released in America, and the similarities between Wario and Booster are recognised worldwide! I think this is one of the BEST suggestions! I shall check into it.

Pokemon Trainer - Alt Evos
I kinda like this explanation, even though I struggle to see it myself. I'll add it in anyway - and thanks for explaining the female trainer reference as well!

That's a really bad screenshot. Nana's pink in the game. Trust me. I gots da sprites. OK, she's red on the AMERICAN boxart... I'd say it's possible thanks to the NES Classics being popular in Japan... but wasn't this also an alt in SSBM?
Of course, Ice Climbers might have been so desperate that they had to use strange sources. Still... there are probably better ideas.

A final note, aimed vaguely at Flip's comments at the top of this page, but relevant to everyone.

Just because you see something and immediately think "Oh, that must be a reference to x" is no reason to just flat out assume that's the case.

I want this to be an interesting and, above all, accurate listing. Speculation is one thing, but actually using your brain and the resources available is another. For example, everyone loves suggesting Fox's costumes are from Adventures/Assault/Command. Why is this? His costume doesn't change between any of these games. Everyone just jumps to a conclusion, or references something someone else has said. The rumour spreads and we all suffer. I've made this mistake several times on NinDB before now, and I don't want to go telling unsubstantiated rumour as fact, as these things spread and become common (but wrong) knowledge.

I'll take Falco as another example. Yes, I was convinced his red costume was from Assault, just like most of you. Until I checked it out, and sure enough he also has this alt. in SSBM, which means it's not from Assault (if anything, Assault nicked it from Smash!) So always worth covering your bases.

We may never be able to prove some of the more obscure ones, but we can err on the side of caution and use an "unsolved" tag or similar. Just don't state things as fact unless you've checked them. Make suggestions, but don't be offended if I am not convinced. Don't argue the same point - find a new angle. Find more images.

And remember - they're not all going to be cameos.

I think some of them simply are recolours. But the question should always be "why those particular colours?" If you can answer that question, I'll include it, if you can't, I'll assume it's just a recolour.

And seeing as how Sakurai seems to shoehorn in as many references as he can (moreso even than in Melee) then I'm happy to go for some weird ideas.
