BUMP!
This is pretty neat to see a blog entry from Reuben Langdon, who did the voice and motion capture for Evans (in D:DoC) talking about the motion capture that was made (with videos! In Quicktime . . .) for the game and disappointment of the game not getting released in NA . . . when there was a NA version in the works.
The 1st video. include a pretty good recreation of the opening scene of the game with Ray and Steve while the 2nd includes just people getting flung around which is interesting to see (includes slo-mo shots).
"Many of you may have heard of it but most of you probably have not played this title yet…which is a shame cuz a lot of hard work went into making this gem! First a quick heads up on the back story, (for the actually story check out en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disaster_Day_of_Crisis) I’m wanna tell you all about the blood, sweat, and tears that went into this bad boy! It all started way back before DMC4. I think early 2005? It seems like eons ago…wait! that was eons ago!
We were called in to help with the casting by Links Digiworks, they were in charge of the animation for the project. They are the same guys who did the Cinematic animation for DMC3 & 4. Like DMC they wanted to cast the motion capture and voice actors out of LA! We got our hands on the script and started the casting processes. We also started doing various motion capture test in our valencia training facility. (man i miss that place!) We played around with numerous disaster scenarios and what the motion would be like. Using wires we tried to simulate stuff like getting swept up by a tidal wave, falling down collapsing buildings, and getting caught up in tornados. In addition we also shot a video storyboard of the open sequence, where the hero Ray losses his best friend Steve do to a sudden Volcanic eruption during a rescue mission.
In Disaster I played the role of Evens (mo-cap and voice) the main side kick to the leader of STOM. This is the first chance I got to play a bad guy! I mean a real bad guy. Had bit parts here and there in the past but I this was the first time I got to really embrace a villain role. It was a lot of fun and after the whole experience i realized that I really liked playing the bad guy, maybe more than the hero. (i’ll explain why in a later blog post) I also performed the mo-cap for Steve, the guy who dies at the beginning sending Ray into his pitiful emo condition.
Still not sure if we will ever see this game States side. I heard that one of the major reasons for the delays was that in the original game design Monolith (game production company) was just going to use the standard controller and in the middle of production they decided to change the controls so the player would use the Wii remote. Also after we finished the mo-cap and voice over stuff, much later in the production, Nintendo bought out Monolith and Nintendo of America decided that the dialogue as is wouldn’t fly with America audiences. Bah! So almost a year later the original cast was brought in to re-record a lot of their lines. Probably the most noticeable change was changing STORM to SURGE. A lot of the other changes were pretty minor just changing sentence structure and other stupid stuff. Not quite sure why they did it, the original sounded fine to me. Monolith wasn’t happy with the rewrites either and last i heard there were actually gonna be 2 versions of the game. I think the Japanese release stuck with the original version the one we (just Cause) created together with Monolith. Not sure about the European version, whether they went with the original or the Nintendo of America rewrite version.
Anyway I do hope it does make it to the shelves whichever version they decide to go with. Like i said a lot of hard work went into making it. Just don’t want our work go to waste…dammit!"
