My thoughts were that in the Arcade Donkey Kong, he was already pretty old (say his 60s or beyond) and Mario, starting out, in his early 20s. Fast forward to the SNES generation, Mario is a little older. Cranky has given up the mantle of Donkey Kong to his grandson and as a result of no longer being as active as before, starts to show his age. As a consequence (as showed by Yoshi's Island DS), Mario and Luigi and Peach and Super DK and Wario and Bowser and Yoshi are all roughly the same age.

I have a new theory, Donkey Kong is DKJr.'s grand father, and DkJr. is Current DK. Dkjr. had a choice to either save his father or grand father. He chose grand father. So his father was getting bug spray up his butt and is sadly not here with us today as he suffocated when getting his head stuck inside that thing.

To avoid confusion Cranky=Old DK
DK Jr. = Cranky's Son
DK (The new one) = Cranky's grandson
Which means:
DK Jr. = Dk's Father.

Judging all the similarities betwen the Kong family and the Hillbilly way of life (they figth crocodiles, have barrel tecnology, even hillbilly kong was due to apear in Diddy kong pilot) I bet Cranky is both current DK Father AND Grandfather.
