I think that's supposed to be Blazing Heroes, flip. XD And for the record, I'd say that if the game was made by a developer formerly known as Sega-AM#, then it's OK. The rest of those Sega games seem a bit on the fence to me. Is Fry around? Maybe he can help us clarify... The thing with Sega, though, is that they are more on board with controlling titles that they published but didn't develop. They don't have as many hold ups as Nintendo seems to have.

That's the problem. I can't really figure out which brands would be available and which ones wouldn't, and my only real resource here are the crappily inconsistent pages on Wikipedia. Makes me wish there was a Sega Database out there.

Zaxxon Vs. Space Firebird, anyone? How about N-Sub Vs. Heli Fire? @ Parrot: Exactly how big is Joy Mecha Fight's fanbase? I haven't gone looking for anything about it, but I certainly haven't seen much of it otherwise. I've seen some Joy Mech Fight characters converted to M.U.G.E.N, I've seen fan-made Joy Mech Fight soundtracks like this one being made, I've seen someone writing on a Joy Mech Fight cartridge (which is probably one of the people involved in the game's development writing his signature), I've seen a bunch of stuff related to Joy Mech Fight.

OK.... and... how does that make the fanbase "big"? It certainly isn't anywhere near as big as say... Earthbound or Mario's fanbases.

He does seem to get a good deal of requests from Japanese people to become a Smash Bros fighter even with the N64 release... but we know that Sakurai 'couldn't work it out' or whatever that was about.

He couldn't get the whole limbless thing to work right with the game's engine. That's the same reason he gave for not having Dixie paired with Diddy, so we'll have to take his word for it.

I like to think of Super Monkey Ball as a game with cute characters stuck in balls... What Nintendo game do we know like that huh?
On second thought Pokemon might not be such a good pair off.
Also, who ever suggested assist trophies still thinks this is a Smash Bros. game. Which it is not. Right?

Is not Koopaul, if it were a Smash game, we would be keeping most of the characters from Brawl. Its just a lineup for a crossover picture right now.

So you mean that this was all for a fanart that you're making of it?

With Sega - especially early Sega - working out what properties belong to them and which ones they simply "converted" to their systems is tough. But during the 16-bit era, and licensing started looking more like it does today, it's a lot easier to distinguish between Sega properties.
If in doubt, the best guide is to find out what game series Sega is still keeping alive, either through remakes, sequels, reissues (VC) and compilations. Or perhaps even checking out what appears in their Sega Superstars series.
Because cutting out everything except games made by the in-house teams is horribly restrictive - as restrictive as cutting out Kirby and Pokemon from Nintendo's list.
On the other subject of Joy Mech Fight - it wasn't a popular game. It was released too late in the system's life to be popular. But it does have a small fanbase of people who retroactively love the game - it IS a good, solid fighting game after all!
And Man-Frog, all we know is that Sakurai couldn't get him to work in the game. To say it's because of the limblessness, or the licensing problems, etc. etc is all conjecture. If I were to take an educated guess, I'd say the limblessness would be the problem, but I don't know that for certain.

I actually did compile a list of franchises that could be suitable for references in a massive crossover fighter, but since boring lists are against the rules, I can't very well show it here for you and everyone else to evaluate. Should I PM it instead?

I believe it's because Sakurai didn't allow any Japan-only series to have a playable character of their own represented other than the Fire Emblem series.
Also, I believe that some characters (including Assist Trophies) Sakurai was adding were used to advertise certain games that are upcoming or were recently released. Saki Amamiya was used to advertise the Virtual Console release of Sin and Punishment, as well as to help advertise the upcoming sequel; Little Mac was added to prepare gamers for the upcoming Punch-Out!! Wii title, Barbara the Bat was used to advertise the then-upcoming release of Daigasso! Band Brothers DX, as well as a few other games starring her like Master of Illusion for example; Ray Mk III (or "Custom Robo" as Smash Bros. Dojo calls it) was used to advertise Custom Robo Arena, and Stafy was used to advertise the then-upcoming release of Densetsu no Stafy Taiketsu! Dire Kaizokudan.
If there was a brand-new Joy Mech Fight under development or is about to be released, then Sukapon probably would of been added to SSBB either as a playable character or an Assist Trophy.

Should I PM it instead? Because the list in and of itself is relevant and helpful to the topic, I'll allow it Just stick to the Sega franchises.

Here is a video I created showing eight different protagonists from Sega's games in M.U.G.E.N.
