Dixie seems like the most likely DKC character, and as much as I hate to admit it, K.Rool is next. Personally, I would like t see him as a boss, but hey, we got Bowser.
VB: cannonball drop, will jump and cause cannon balls to fall down. <B: crown throw, works like link'sboomerang except in a straght path. ^B: will use a barrel cannon and shot upwards. Can be charged and aimed. B: K.Rool run: will charge for a whil, then dash, like pegasus boots.

Flip: very good points. But don't be alarmed by your comment about the cover; characters that are weird would be hidden and not appear in there.
I agree that K. Rool doesn't need the costume swapping. And his weapon could be used as King K. Rool, just like other characters who use tools that don't match their costumes, IMO.

Personally, my idea on the roster would be something like this: First of, Japan only characters using the 5 chars in a row style... Skapon, Takamaru, Staffy, Demille and maiby Captain Rainbow but most likely RANDOM... Mario: Mario (with Dr.Mario costume), Luigi, Peach, Bowser and maiby Bleck or Fawful I'm not sure,.. but not Toad. He's already in as Peach's B move so I don't get it why he must be in... SubMario: DK, Diddy, Yoshi, Wario (with a Samurai Goroh, and Yokuba skins) and Ashley (with Ashley having colours that makes her look like: Kumatora, Lip, Mimi, and more... Oh, and I DO, have a movelist idea for her...) Zelda: Link, Zelda/Sheik, Ganondorf, ToonLink, ToonZelda or even Vaati... Oldschool returns: Samus, Ridley, Pit, Iceclimbers, and ROB... Kirby Series and misc: Kirby, MetaKnight, DeDeDe, Daroach?, Mr.Game&Watch... FireEmblem: Marth, Ike (with Roy costume), Lynn (she deserves a spot), C.Falcon, Olimar... StarFox: Fox, Falco, Krystal, Wolf, uh.... MOTHER: Ness, Lucas, Claus (as Masked Man), Porky (in a smaller version of his Mother3 machine) and one more... Pokemon: Pikachu (with Pichu 2nd costume), Jigglypuff, PKMN Trainer, Lucario, Mewtwo... And IF there will be 3rd party characters... KONAMI: Snake, Ocelot or Simon Belmont... SEGA: Sonic and Tails... CAPCOM: Zero (with Megaman.exe 2nd costume), Arthur (Ghosts n Goblins) or Strider Hiryuu (he was in a NES game afterall) and maiby more. Oh and I also consern about the Adventure mode part... I liked the Story mode alot, but I also missed the SSBM Adventure mode. So I was thinking about having a SSBM Adventure mode called: ADVENTURE MODE. And the SSBB Type Adventure Mode, renamed: STORY MODE...

King K Rool should be playable for the sake of having the first event being Three Trouble Kings.

SkaponSakurai said no. .... or did he? *shifts eyes suspiciously* Demille and maiby Captain RainbowWhat significance does Demille have? He probably has a shot at Assist status at best. Captain Rainbow on the hand is not getting in, unless Sakurai happened to notice the game and it's...er, quirkiness. and maiby Bleck or Fawful I'm not sure,.. but not Toad. He's already in as Peach's B move so I don't get it why he must be in...You suggest Bleck and Fawful of all characters but question Toad's significance? Are you mad? Bleck is a one-shot villain from a spinoff and Fawful is a memetic character who's only confined to one subseries. Toad has appeared in just about every major Mario game since the beginning and is part of the "big eight" Mario characters, the first seven of which are already in. He's also the next most recognizable character after Wario, who was the last one to be added. Wario (with a Samurai Goroh, and Yokuba skins) ..uh... why? Couldn't they just uh, you know, MAKE SAMURAI GOROH PLAYABLE? *hyperventilates for a moment* OK.....OK... deep breaths....deep breaths. Gotta be careful not to lose my cool..... and Ashley (with Ashley having colours that makes her look like: Kumatora, Lip, Mimi, and more... Oh, and I DO, have a movelist idea for her...)We don't need another Wario character, especially not one as needlessly popular as Ashley. And why would characters have alternate palettes taken from other game series entirely? Not saying it isn't possible, but it hasn't happened yet. or even Vaati...NEVAR! nsifozdnoifjn *faints* Daroach?...who? Lynn (she deserves a spot)Not anymore she doesn't. Fire Emblem is well past that era. They'll likely add the main character of whatever FE game is the newest at the time of the next SSB's arrival. KrystalNO. If you'd like to know why, just refer to Kirbychu's posts elsewhere in this thread. Claus (as Masked Man), Porky (in a smaller version of his Mother3 machine) and one more...One more? We don't even need more than Ness and Lucas! Porky's already a boss, and why the hell does everybody insist on having Claus/Masked Man be playable? Yes he's significant, but I think it kinda ruins the whole surprise ending and all the sentimentality that comes with it. It's almost like making Hinawa playable. Pikachu (with Pichu 2nd costume), Jigglypuff, PKMN Trainer, Lucario, Mewtwo...The "Pichu as costume" won't work unless it's just Pikachu with black highlights on his ears and tail. "Costume" implies an alternate skin or color palette. When you go through the effort of changing the shape and hitboxes, that's creating another character entirely, whether they occupy the same "slot" or not. Snake, Ocelot or Simon Belmont...Why Ocelot? Why have more than one Konami character? Simon would be awesome and all, but who said they'd even allow it? Sonic and Tails...One Sonic character is enough. At least you didn't ask for Shadow or anything like that though. Zero (with Megaman.exe 2nd costume), Arthur (Ghosts n Goblins) or Strider Hiryuu (he was in a NES game afterall)Why not just have classic Mega Man and be done with it? Zero is ass. [/retro purist] No but seriously, if Capcom got the chance, they'd only add one of their Mega Man iterations or maybe Ryu, since he's the poster boy for the king of fighting game franchises. Oh and I also consern about the Adventure mode part... I liked the Story mode alot, but I also missed the SSBM Adventure mode. So I was thinking about having a SSBM Adventure mode called: ADVENTURE MODE. And the SSBB Type Adventure Mode, renamed: STORY MODE...I don't think Smash ever needed a story. I previously proposed an idea for a beefed up Adventure Mode that includes elements added for tSsE. Besides, don't "Story Mode" and "Adventure Mode" kinda mean the same thing?

Look: since Melee, Nintendo has been seeing a slow resurgence in popularity. Particularly in the zone of classic and retro franchises. The perfect example, I would say, is what I used to coin the term "Metroid Effect." When the original Smash 64 was released in 1999, Super Metroid was 5 years old. Samus was an older character by that point and this was her first appearance in 3D. When the Gamecube was announced a year later, and the first demos were shown a year after that, Samus was present once again in Melee. We also caught a glimpse of a fully-rendered Samus running down a hallway as part of the Gamecube demo medley. Soon after Melee's release, Metroid Prime was announced and released itself a full 8 years after Super Metroid. Prime proved to be so popular that Metroid became a "hot ticket" franchise alongside Pokemon, Mario, and Zelda, producing 3 new sequels, 2 spinoff titles, and a remake. Nobody today will question that Metroid is one of Nintendo's powerhouse franchises.
Now let's journey back to 2001 again. Melee has just been released and the character Roy is unveiled. Fire Emblem as a series had been dormant on consoles for 5 years (though technically 3 with the Nintendo Power); Roy was the posterchild for the revived spirit of the new portable series. The success of the new Fire Emblem title produced a wave of sequels and the presence of both Marth and Roy in Melee encouraged the franchise to come abroad to Western markets. Fire Emblem received two new home console games and a remake of the original, as well as the three GBA titles, since Melee. In seven years' time, nobody will question the power of Fire Emblem as a part of Nintendo's library. The "Metroid Effect."
Do you not understand the point I am making here? Let's examine recent titles, upcoming releases, and the like. Is the "Metroid Effect" still happening? If you asked me, I would say yes. Punch-Out was a series that has experienced a slight resurgence in popularity from the Virtual Console and retro-gaming nostalgia. The presence of the franchise in big titles such as Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Captain Rainbow, and minor references in games like Animal Crossing, assist in this growth. Punch-Out is currently undergoing the "Metroid Effect." We are getting a Wii Punch-Out within a few months; it is only a matter of time until the series explodes once more.
Sin and Punishment I would say is also following in the footsteps of "Metroid." I'm not too positive about any other franchises at this point, but I would confidently throw all my weight behind either Punch-Out or Sin and Punishment as the new "up and coming" revivals. If Kid Icarus Wii is indeed legitimate, then we may also have a third contender for the "Metroid Effect." Though, I may have to come up with the term "Kid Icarus Effect" for that one, considering the nature of its revival is completely different... (people assuming it was more popular/nostalgic than it really was, and ultimately this leading to "reinventing" the franchise for a one-shot deal)
Other series like Starfy, Wario, or DK have always been releasing games, however so subtly, throughout the years. They are NOT undergoing a Renaissance of any sort.
Franchises like Famicom Wars have had their "revivals" already and have not left a very large mark, it would seem.
A game like Nazo no Murasamejou or Shin Oni Ga Shima, not being part of a larger franchise, will have to rely on either sheer "Nostalgic's Love" or a resurgence in interest for the original title. I would say that Nazo fits the bill, considering Takamaru's appearance in Captain Rainbow, however I would not use that as the only basis for claiming "ultimate popularity" on the game or character.
We need to be very careful about what we see and describe as being "popular." It would seem that this is indeed a good tool for determining the future roster of any crossover fighting game title, however "popularity" obviously lies in the eye of the beholder as reading any post on this forum would tell you. Let's try and be more realistic about our claims.

I don't know why so many have insisted on Toon Zelda. I think it would be a crappy idea to have another clone and ANOTHER Zelda character. Zelda is at the max. Don't add anymore unless you wanna hack off Toon Link or something.
Also, why hasn't anyone suggested Ray from Custom Robo, but me?

Assuming no sequel for Mother 3, if the Masked Man appears somehow in SSB4 (even unplayable), it's not necessary to state that Claus is the Masked Man. Not even in trophies. Well, that's how I'd do it. I did play Ocarina of Time in 1998, but I felt Sheik was kind of a spoiler in Melee (though I must admit, a princess entering "warrior mode" makes sense in a fighting game).

Nobody wanted to see Roy and Mewtwo removed but they did. So yeah, just because "nobody" wants it doesn't mean it won't happen and just because "everybody" wants it doesn't mean it will happen. I think it makes more sense to add more Mario and Zelda characters than more F-Zero characters. Really, those two franchises are way more popular and marketable than F-Zero will ever be. Its no wonder Sakurai planned on giving Mario 5 slots (Dr. Mario), Zelda 5 slots (Toon Zelda/Toon Sheik) and Pokemon 6 slots (Plusle & Minun AND Mewtwo) in Brawl and didn't even plan on giving F-Zero 2 slots. Even Fire Emblem is more popular than F-Zero that it was going to have 3 slots (Roy). Oh, about Dixie Kong, its highly likely that she was going to be teamed up with Diddy Kong. Its the only explaination why Diddy Kong's down special is that banana throwing move, especially when we already have a banana peel item. I read somewhere that Sakurai got excited at the idea of Diddy Kong and Dixie Kong as a team when it was suggested on the Brawl poll. I think Sakurai didn't add Dixie Kong in because he had some problems with the game code to make them work as an Ice Climbers-like team that switch characters like Zelda/Sheik. My suggestion would be keeping Dixie untouchable (invincible, following Diddy closely, and won't do anything) whenever Diddy is in the lead, and vice versa - just like in Donkey Kong Country 2. Also, I haven't seen any good reason just how Diddy Kong and Dixie Kong working together as a team would ruin Diddy Kong's gameplay. Japan hates Wars games? Then why are there many Wars games on Famicom, Super Famicom, GameBoy, GameBoy Advance, Wii, and DS? I think its pretty popular enough to have about 10 games in Japan and it is apparently popular enough over here in North America that we got about 5 games. So who else could represent the Zapper games if it cannot be Hunting Dog? Wild Gunman? Maybe but he's too obscure. Mr. Stevenson? You play his game by shooting at him to make him jump (not a good start to build a moveset on) and he's way more obscure than Wild Gunman. Hunting Dog is the most recognizable Zapper-related character and Duck Hunt sold way more than Wild Gunman, Gumshoe, and Hogan's Alley, thus Hunting Dog would be more marketable than Wild Gunman and Mr. Stevenson. In case you haven't noticed, Ice Climbers (in Japan), Mr. Game & Watch, Marth (in Japan), Pit, and R.O.B. were very recognizable retro characters - just like Little Mac, Takamaru (in Japan), and Hunting Dog are now. Wild Gunman and Mr. Stevenson don't fall under this category, they fall under the "so obscure that the few people who recognize them are mostly Nintendo historians" category. Metroid doesn't need more characters but F-Zero does? Why on earth would Metroid get less characters than F-Zero when Metroid is way more popular and marketable? Additionally, Captain Falcon is the central focus of his series just like Samus is the central focus of her series. F-Zero is all about Captain Falcon's races and Metroid is all about Samus's adventures. On third-party characters, yes, Kojima approached Sakurai and requested for Snake to be included. But it seemed like a bad sign to me when Sakurai said Kojima "practically begged" because it sounds like Kojima asked Sakurai to put Snake in Melee and when Sakurai said no, Kojima insisted on adding Snake, and Sakurai still said no so Kojima started to "practically beg" Sakurai until he caved in and told Kojima he would add Snake in the next game. Sonic's last-minute addition was a big red flag because despite being the world's #1 most-wanted third-party character for Brawl, he still wasn't getting in at all so Nintendo and Sega made some legal agreement or whatever and ordered Sakurai to add Sonic in the last minute, making him delay the game for the first time. So, it seems to me that third-party characters have very low priority and have very hard time getting into SSB. Even if Snake and Sonic were returning in SSB4, Mega Man, Pac-Man, and others would have difficulty getting in. Johans, I listed Balloon Fighter there because he's one of the most-wanted Famicom characters according to many fans on SmashBoards (I lurk there) and that's why I had all those 40 possible characters listed in the first place - some were expected and some were unexpected. So I considered Balloon Fighter despite Sakurai saying he wouldn't work anyway. Hope that helps. Oh, and Man-Frog? Limiting yourself to 50 characters is pretty much the same as using the roster screen size as a way to decide who should get in. Something you're guilty of, too. Flip, about Hunting Dog. He would be best suited as an unlockable character. Notice I never said anything about using him to market SSB4. I only suggested using Takamaru (a retro Japan-only character), Little Mac (Punch-Out!! Wii), Starfy (Legendary Starfy DS), Saki Amamiya (Sin & Punishment 2 Wii), and Commanding Officer (Andy from Advance Wars GBA) to market SSB4 with Mario, Link, Pikachu, Kirby, and Pit. Seriously, would Mr. Game & Watch's monochromic face on the box art make people want to buy Melee? Would R.O.B.'s robotic blank stare on the box art make people want to buy Brawl? Heck, would Marth's Japanese-only face make people want to buy Melee? I don't think so. It isn't like I'm saying Hunting Dog should be the only character to grace SSB4's box art. That's bad marketing! It would be okay if he was with many popular veterans and newcomers but I'm doing that with Takamaru instead just like how Pit was on Brawl's box art. Takamaru is just more marketable. Market with more Marioverse characters, Zelda characters, Pokemon characters, a new Fire Emblem character, and maybe a new Star Fox character (Krystal) plus four popular Nintendo franchises (Punch-Out!!, Starfy, Sin & Punishment, and Wars) and at least two popular retro franchises (Nazo no Murasamejou and Duck Hunt). Its pretty much what happened with Brawl. Two popular retro franchises (Kid Icarus and Robot), two new Marioverse characters (Wario and Diddy Kong), two new Kirby characters, plenty of new Pokemon characters, and new characters for popular franchises (Pikmin, Fire Emblem, Mother, Star Fox). Same thing happened in Melee - many Mario and Zelda characters, two popular retro franchises (Ice Climber and Game & Watch), one new Star Fox character, two more Pokemon characters and two characters from a popular Japan-only franchise (Fire Emblem).

Okay here's what we're gonna do. I'm gonna list (almost) every character requested here into one large list, each of us then takes the list and Exalts or Smites every character ONCE by one point. You can also just ignore a character and not Exalt or Smite it. This won't necessarily mean anything towards this topic I just want to know the popular votes for the following characters. Okay? Here's the list plus my votes: Andy or Sami | -1 | Animal Crosser | 0 | Ashley | -1 | Balloon Fighter | 0 | Bowser Jr. | -1 | Captain Rainbow | 0 | Commanding Officer | -1 | DeMille | -1 | Dixie Kong | 1 | Diskun | -1 | Dr. Mario | -1 | Hunting Dog | -1 | Isaac | 0 | Jill | -1 | K. Rool | 0 | Krystal | 1 | Little Mac | 1 | Lyn | -1 | Mach Rider | 0 | Masked Man | -1 | Meowth | -1 | Mewtwo | -1 | Midna | -1 | Muddy Mole | -1 | Porky | 0 | Plusle & Minun | -1 | Ray MK | 1 | Ridley | 1 | Roy | -1 | Saki Amamiya | 0 | Samurai Goroh | 1 | Starfy | 1 | Sukapon | 0 | Takamaru | 0 | Tingle | 0 | Toad | -1 | Toon Zelda | -1 | Vaati | -1 |
EDIT: (my reasons for positives) DIXIE is the next logical choice for a DK character to me. She seems to offer more uniqueness as a character than K. Rool would. KRYSTAL is a highly requested Star Fox character with the potential to be a whole new character on her own. LITTLE MAC is a classic Nintendo character like Pit who was designed as a fighter. RAY MK is the representative of another classic Nintendo brawler, who offers lots of new and fun fighting styles. RIDLEY is the only other Metroid character worthy to fight along Samus, his role in the series makes him the next most important character. SAMURAI GOROH is the next logical choice as an F-Zero rep, and his sword just beckons to be used, not to mention he's the popular rival of Captain Falcon. STARFY is one of the newest Nintendo characters that's now coming stateside, his series are cute and unique, I can only imagine how much fun it would be to play as the little fellow. (reason for negatives) ANDY, I can't imagine an Advanced Wars character, I think they'd be better off as a stage and AT. ASHLEY not that I wouldn't think she'd be a good character, it's just that I believe Wario's good on his own, she'd make a sweet AT though. BOWSER JR, I think Mario has a good thing going for him, seems really balanced, we don't need another. COMMANDING OFFICER, same reason as ANDY. DEMILLE, unlike the other obscure Nintendo characters, DEMILLE lacks the history and popularity they do. DISKUN is an immobile mascot of the Disk System, he can't really fight. DR MARIO, I dislike clones, and I don't just mean for movesets, even if the Doctor had his own moves he's still another Mario, besides, Mario has enough already. HUNTING DOG screams AT, not character. JILL is the same reason as DeMille. LYN has had a short time as an important Fire Emblem character, I believe another is needed. MASKED MAN, is another character from Mother 3 only, I don't want to favor one Mother game over another. MEOWTH seems like a good idea, but I don't want generation 1 to dominate in the Pokemon department. MEWTWO had a good run but his time in the spotlight is over and soon the same with Lucario. MIDNA is a fad right now but she won't be around forever. MUDDY seems to lack the historical significance to be a character, however he seems very AT status. PLUSLE & MINUN were a flash in the pan, their time is up. ROY doesn't deserve to return simply because he is a one time character in a long running series full of heroes more worthy than him. TOAD, there's enough Mario characters already! TOON ZELDA, no more Toon characters... better yet, no more Zelda characters. VAATI, no more Zelda characters, there's enough as it is, I think they'd be fine even without Toon Link.

Kojima was contacted by Sakurai himself when they started working on Brawl, asking him to work on Snake's moveset and design Snake's stage. The way you wrote it makes it seem he was just some random developer constantly calling Sakurai at his house, knocking on his window and beg, like a creepy hobo begs for change, for Snake to show up in Brawl. It's apparent they didn't give a hoot about other potential 3rd party newcomers though. They added Snake and basically were all 'Well, he's non-Nintendo... so if developer X really wants his creation in, give us a call I guess'. I'm guessing because they didn't feel like making these deals with all these third party companies when you can add Nintendo characters instead. No hassle, no royalties. They actually bothered meeting up with SEGA however because of the massive amounts of Sonic requests. This is a good way to get that NinDB character roster since, y'know, that's what this thread was about afterall. You should add a little explanation for some of your choices though, to keep Fry happy. I'll post mine later on.

You don't think Sakurai was serious about Kojima "practically begging", do you? It was a joke among two good friends. And Sakurai didn't say "no" to having Snake in Melee, there just wasn't enough time, so he promised to have Snake in the next game. That's why Snake was showcased at the very first Brawl trailer. Smash Bros is Sakurai's game. He liked F-Zero and Earthbound, so Ness and Captain Falcon got in the first game. He liked the music in Dr. Mario, so Dr. Mario got in Melee. He's best friends with Kojima so Snake got in Brawl. And why the fuck does everyone insist that Sonic caused the delay? Why would they showcase Sonic the very same day they announce a delay? Hell, it could just be so we had something to look forward too.

Yeah. They showcase a clearly finished Sonic in a video the same day they announce a delay. So clearly, that finished Sonic is causing the delay, right? It's not like it's already done and being showcased in a gameplay video already.
WELCOME TO LOGIC TOWN.

But, may I ask why Toad MUST, be in? He's already in the game as Peach's B move! I think the reason they did that was because they simply could'nt come up with anything for Toad to fight with. And if he did, what the heck would happen to Peach's B move? Christ, Toad has been assigned to exist as Peach's B move. Sakurai's choise, not mine... But I do imagine Hunting Dog as an Assist Trophy. When summoned, an 8bit bush appears and he get's up from it, suddenly, a flock of ducks fly around, hurting anyone coming in contact with them, that, and a huge crosshair appears, focusing on the players on the level trying to shoot them. When the time is up, the Dog will do his trademark laugh and hid in the bush which then dissipears in a puff of smoke... As for the confusion about Wario/Samurai Goroh. Well, Wario's WarioWare suit has a very simhilair shape to Goroh's suit, so it could very well work as a costume, Yokuba from Mother3 aswell, considering that in SSE, Wario was a bit like Yokuba, considering that he was there when Porky fought Lucas and Ness... As for Ashley, my consideration is that SSB4 needs MORE female characters. That, and I think Wario should in SSB4 represent the Wario Land series, so Ashley will become the representative for WarioWare. That and Ashley was a highly requested character in Japan... The same about Lynn and Krystal. we need more female characters, point... And I highly consider Demille to be in, he's way to overlooked. just like Takamaru and Stafy... that and Sakurai was interested in having Demille in... EDIT: About Wario Goroh, I found an interesting SSBB texture hack site that can prove that a Samurai Goroh Wario does'nt look to shaby, that and many many interesting skins that would work rather well aswell in SSB4: stacksmash.cultnet.net/?page_id=86
