I'll agree for now. But what about Pokemon? We had two in SSB64, four in Melee, and now six in Brawl. If the trend continues into SSB4, I think we might have eight Pokemon.

Eh, I still don't count Pokémon Trainer as three separate characters. Five Pokémon characters for the next game seems okay to me. It is an important franchise, after all. Maybe they could just bring back Mewtwo. I think Lucario will stay, though. Amongst the kids I know, the only Pokémon more recognisable is Pikachu itself. Kids who buy Pokémon cards from me at work also pretty much exclusively ask for packs with Lucario on them, if we have any.

I'm under the assumption that they'll add at least one new Pokemon from whatever generation is current by the time Smash 4 is out. Not too hard to figure out there.

I'm totally with you on adding at least one new Pokemon from the 5th generation. Its expected.
But the one question that can turn this controversial is - what if this 5th gen Pokemon replaces Lucario? I think this is a good question to ask because the same thing happened to Mewtwo.

It could either happen that way, or they could keep Lucario and add Mewtwo back in. Naturally the latter is the best case scenario, but then some may whine about Pokemon getting too many characters (which is pretty stupid considering how massive it is, both in success and scale).

In all fairness and with the assumption of cap-5, we do have to account for the possibility that there won't be a tough mascot Pokemon in Gen. 5, in which case it'd be a question of keeping Lucario (if Lucario is still in force,) replacing him with Mewtwo (should Mewtwo overtake Lucario,) or just dropping him (in case neither is in force at the time.) In that case, our Gen. 5 Pokemon would likely be a cutesy Pokemon, and we'd probably pick up Meowth. If Toad had his own game called Super Toad or something and its a 2D platformer game - somewhat like SMB2 and SPP and WW in terms of gameplay involving uprooting veggies and using mushrooms like Peach does with hearts and lifting tall stacks of enemies - in the future before SSB4 is announced, can he be playable then? He had Wario's Woods, which should count for something. Maybe not alot, but something.

Assuming that none of the Brawl characters are removed, there's only 15 left to reach 50. In that case, I wouldn't pick Toad yet. The answer to Peach's Neutral Special Move issue is simple and it's to replace him with Toadsworth, a thing that didn't happen in Brawl, but I don't think it's worth it yet. At the request of Koopaul and Rob, I'll update the list with my exalts/smites (also hoping they're useful to Shrikeswind): Andy or Sami | 0 | | Animal Crosser | 0 | You are this character in Animal Crossing. The Animal Crossing stage in Brawl has a custom name, so you playing as an Animal Crossing character isn't impossible. | Ashley | -3 | Not one of the most important Wario Land or WarioWare characters. | Balloon Fighter | -1 | Could happen, but I won't push it. | Bowser Jr. | -2 | He could have chances if he continues as an ally of Bowser in the mainstream Mario games. | Captain Rainbow | -2 | Too recent, Japan-only, from a game that was praised by Nintendo fans because of cameos by other characters and not because of Captain Rainbow himself. | Commanding Officer | -2 | I'd like to try something like this, but I've not heard good enough ideas in this thread. | DeMille | 0 | He has interesting moves, but we've not heard of him recently. Try as an Assist Trophy first and hope for a new Tomato Adventure game. | Dixie Kong | 1 | The third playable Kong to appear in Donkey Kong video games. She would be very cool, but since this is for a roster of 50 characters, I'll vote against her and in favor of K. Rool. | Diskun | -2 | | Dr. Mario | -1 | A choice of the director of Super Smash Bros. He may have fans, and there are sure several Dr. Mario games (including the WiiWare one) but there are more Mario alter egos I'd like to try. So no, not a character slot of his own. | Hunting Dog | -2 | | Isaac | 1 | | Jill | 0 | | K. Rool | 0 | A recurring villain since Donkey Kong's debut as a playable character, appearing even in adventures where Dixie isn't present. He's funny and dark at the same time. His inclusion may allow for the introduction of other things related to him, like stages and songs. | Krystal | -1 | 3 Star Fox characters is still a big enough number for a roster of 50 characters. And I'm happy with the inclusion of Wolf over Krystal. He appeared before her, and he represents Star Wolf. | Little Mac | 3 | The main character in a classic video game series loved by many. Way before the Virtual Console release, Brawl, or Wii's Punch-Out!!. His comeback would feel like Pit's as in "this is a missing important puzzle piece of Nintendo's history". | Lyn | -2 | | Mach Rider | 1 | I've seen convincing movesets for him. Also remember that Mach Rider was originally a Nintendo toy, so it deserves some homage. However, much like the Balloon Fighter, I'm not pushing this. | Masked Man | -2 | This would be my immediate choice for Mother characters if I had to pick a third one and no sequel for Mother 3 is announced yet. It doesn't matter which chapter any odd number of Mother characters come from, as they're in the same continuity, and the Masked Man is not a protagonist but one of the main antagonists and his moves would be varied. However, I'm uncertain about whether 3 Mother characters would be necessary in a roster of 50 characters, and there could be a sequel even if Itoi says there's no plans for it. | Meowth | -2 | One of the main Pokémon characters in Pokémon merchandise or in games that are not about Trainers or Rangers. But as long as they don't get rid of Jigglypuff and they create more Pokémon generations, there's low chances for Meowth to be considered necessary as a playable character. | Mewtwo | 0 | | Midna | -3 | No Zelda sequel has been announced with Midna in it, and her being a major character in it, if it ever exists, is impossible to tell as I post this. | Muddy Mole | -1 | Another character I'd try as an Assist Tropy first. | Porky | -2 | He's not as suitable to fight as other worthy Mother characters. He always fights inside mechas, and some moves of Giygas and Porky, described as "inexplicable", are better if left abstract and not materialized as moves of a SSB playable character. | Plusle & Minun | 0 | They are representative characters of Pokémon double battles, and a tag team that does makes sense. However, there's not much space for more Pokémon, and a Pokémon from the latest generation (as of SSB4) should be made playable. | Ray | 2 | | Ridley | 0 | | Roy | -2 | | Saki Amamiya | 1 | | Samurai Goroh | 3 | He has always been the rival of Captain Falcon, and the spirit of racing isn't complete without a rival. | Starfy | 3 | Good moveset, long game series, internationalization, and cutesy is what makes me exalt this option. | Sukapon | 1 | | Takamaru | 1 | | Tingle | 0 | He's a recurring funny and weird character in Zelda games, who has begun to star his own games. He isn't one of the Triforce characters, but he may be considered a spin-off character in the future, like Wario and Yoshi, especially if they make more games of him. | Toad | -1 | Maybe for SSB5. | Toon Zelda | 0 | The childish figure of Link can remain, as he was a boy in Zelda 1 and was already represented as a boy in Melee. But will that be the toon-shading form of him? If not, then it's not 100% sure there will still exist a Toon Zelda. | Vaati | -3 | He's a villain in more than one Zelda game, but he's not essential to narrate the story of Hyrule. |
Also, I want to share a banner I once made by using a screenshot of the 2007 official Pokémon calendar: This was Nintendo's view on how to represent Pokémon in 2006, I guess.

Wait, Issac was on that list wasn't he? Maybe a poll thread would work better. You can't vote against but still.

How does Smashville having its name prevent an Animal Crossing character from getting in?
I'm pretty sure they were gonna have an AC character playable at one point, but I guess it just couldn't work out well.

Kinda doubt it, considering in Iwata Asks they used an AC villager as an example of a character that birthed the idea of Assist Trophies (characters they couldn't make movesets for but wanted to put in anyway).

That, or the way Animal Crossing was presented in Brawl (other treatment besides a fighter) was kind of their way of getting most people to realize that there's more to the game than just playable characters. Other than that, Assist Trophies are a good, fair trade-off to certain other minor characters as is.
