Well I didn't know that. I thought it had some sort of continuity...

After weeks of lurking around SmashBoard, GameFAQs, and IGN, I think I have a pretty good idea who "everyone" wants in SSB4.
MARIO 1. Mario 2. Luigi 3. Peach 4. Bowser 5. Bowser Jr. 6. Geno
DONKEY KONG 7. Donkey Kong 8. Diddy Kong 9. Dixie Kong 10. King K. Rool
YOSHI 11. Yoshi
WARIO 12. Wario
ZELDA 13. Link 14. Zelda / Sheik 15. Ganondorf 16. Toon Link 17. Midna & Wolf Link
METROID 18. Samus / Zero Suit Samus 19. Ridley
KID ICARUS 20. Pit
ICE CLIMBER 21. Ice Climbers
GYROMITE 22. R.O.B.
KIRBY 23. Kirby 24. Meta Knight 25. King Dedede
PIKMIN 26. Olimar
STAR FOX 27. Fox 28. Falco 29. Wolf 30. Krystal
F-ZERO 31. Captain Falcon 32. Samurai Goroh
POKEMON 33. Pikachu 34. Pokemon Trainer 35. Jigglypuff 36. Lucario 37. Mewtwo
FIRE EMBLEM 38. Marth 39. Ike 40. Roy 41. Lyn
MOTHER 42. Ness 43. Lucas
GAME & WATCH 44. Mr. Game & Watch
METAL GEAR 45. Snake
SONIC 46. Sonic
MEGA MAN 47. Mega Man
PUNCH-OUT!! 48. Little Mac
GOLDEN SUN 49. Isaac
STAFY 50. Stafy
So, am I pretty much spot on on this SSB4 roster that "everyone" on those boards seem to agree on? Because you know, this is what "everyone" hoped Brawl would turn out to be... only with Deoxys, Balloon Fighter, and Young Link, instead of Pokemon Trainer, R.O.B., and Toon Link.

I don't want Midna. As popular as she is now. She's a one time character who will never be a part of the Zelda series again.
Roy too.
Besides, I feel that Zelda already has enough characters, so does Mario.

Yeah, one-time characters like Midna or Skullkid don't really.... well, deserve it in my personal opinion. I think the playable characters should be the common main heroes/allies/villains of a franchise. This is why I think King Dedede's great, but someone like, say, Daroach would seem like an odd choice...

Personally, I'd cut Sonic and Snake from that list, because I don't feel that they belong in Smash Bros. (especially Snake, since he hasn't appeared in a Metal Gear game on a Nintendo system since MGS:The Twin Snakes... which was about ten years ago).
Also, I feel that Stafy isn't worthy of being a selectable character. I'd prefer something like his AT role in Brawl.
Krystal would be an OK character choice, providing she isn't yet another Fox clone, and I'd like to have Bowser Jr. be replaced with Dr. Mario (because I: a) Prefer Doc. Mario to his regular self, and b) Bowser Jr. really gets on my nerves).
The rest of the list is fine though.

You know, even though "everyone" got most of the characters they wanted in Brawl, they still criticized the roster when it was finally revealed and probably still do - I suspect its because they want 50, not 35 (actually 39) AND want certain characters to be playable.

So barely notable characters like Krystal and Dr. Mario are fine, but gaming icons like Sonic and Snake aren't? Riiiiiight... Honestly, all you'd have to do to make my perfect Smash Bros. game would be to take Brawl, remove the SSE enemies and replace them with enemies from various games, throw in a few extra bosses, remove the Great Maze and add a couple more third-party characters (Mega Man, Pac-Man and Bomberman would be juuuuust fine). I would buy that.

I wouldn't say Krystal and Dr. Mario are "barely notable"
Anyway, we're trying to make a nearly perfect roster for NDB, not improve Brawl.

Krystal is barely barely notable. If you haven't played StarFox Adventures, Assault or Command, you're not going to know who Krystal is.
Dr. Mario is somewhat notable, but not enough so that he really deserves to be a playable character, especially when we already have Mario. Alternate costume? Assist trophy? Sure. I always just saw him as a gag character in Melee.

Isn't that like more than half of all the Star Fox games? She's been in Star Fox as many times as Wolf.

Yes. StarFox. StarFox is not a big-name series. I was surprised we got Wolf, even.
Only the first two StarFox games are particularly widely-known (at least for being good) and Krystal was in neither of them.

Must Krystal always bring up controversy?

I think Wolf got in due to some sort of pre-planning on Sakurai's part. Wolf appears in Melee's intro movie even though there's no trace of him anywhere else in the game. Then he appears in Brawl as a playable character. Coincidence?
My perfect SSB would have the roster I mentioned earlier, with nothing but protagonists save a few hidden extras. It would also have Board the Platforms back, and a 1-Player mode that mixes TSsE's robustness with Melee Adventure Mode's reference factor.

That is possible, Man-Frog, and also, its easier to clone Fox twice than to create a new moveset from scratch. That's a possible explanation for the lack of Krystal. Ridley also appeared in the Melee intro and that's the basis "everyone" uses to argue that Ridley can be sized down to be playable. So, if Ridley was the same size as Samus in Melee, why is he so big he can grasp Samus's body all around with one hand alone in Brawl? We have to remember that circa 2001, the most recent Metroid game was Super Metroid which came out in 1994. Ridley was just around the same size as Samus at the time. But now, after Metroid Fusion/Prime came out in 2002, Ridley was resized to be too big. Metroid: Zero Mission (the 2004 remake of the original Metroid) even retcons Ridley's size from a small space dragon to a giant space dragon. Now, as for people falling back on "Bowser was sized down from Super Mario 64/Sunshine/Galaxy!" argument. Well, they seem to forget that Bowser was a bit bigger than Mario in Super Mario Bros. 1 + 3, World, New SMB, Paper Mario games, Mario & Luigi games, Super Mario RPG, and ALL of the spin-off games that Bowser is only too big in 3D games. Its entirely possible that Bowser used a Super/Mega Mushroom or even Kamek's magic in the 3D games. There are no items nor anything that alters one's size in the Metroid games. As for Dark Samus, well, knowing Sakurai's track record with characters who happen to be similar to each other, its highly likely Sakurai would turn Dark Samus into a Samus clone. That's what he did to Luigi (he's always P2 to Mario's P1 in pre-N64 games), Dr. Mario (he's just Mario in a doctor's outfit), Falco/Wolf (they are space furries like Fox), Young/Toon Link (they are just Link as a child), Pichu (a baby Pikachu), and Lucas (he's a psychic boy like Ness). Ganondorf is the only one who doesn't make sense. Anyway, we should be thankful Sakurai gave Metroid a second character by splitting Samus into regular Samus and no-suit Samus, as a homage to Metroid's Justin Bailey code and Metroid: Zero Mission. But of course, Zero Suit Samus doesn't count as a second Metroid character because she's still Samus. Honestly, Metroid is represented just fine as is, in my opinion - Samus and Zero Suit Samus, no Ridley, no Dark Samus, no Hunters.
