Maybe the CSSL isn't important, but it helps with the presentation of the game I guess. I mean, you got to group the characters in the final roster (all SSB games do that) so I thought that the character select grid might help with that. Maybe after you guys come up with 50 characters, you might like to try organizing the roster in groups, whether by rows, columns, and/or squares in a 10x5 grid. I'll post mine when I have time to make one.

40. RANDOM (later changed to Sonic in the last minute, so the game was delayed for the first time, but Sakurai probably still wanted RANDOM so he decided to remove the forbidden seven to make it a perfect 9x4 rectangle instead of 10x4 rectangle with RANDOM sticking out somewhere to ruin the shape but that's JUST MY THEORY! ) I highly doubt they'd cut SEVEN characters just to make the character select into a rectangle. Unless Sakurai has some serious OCD. XD

Yeah, I'm pretty sure the decision on boxes came after the characters were chosen and made.
But we need to make some decisions. It doesn't seem like we're really making a roster together here.
Look here's the deal, we'll do this like a jury, someone proposes a character, even if one person disagrees you can't have that character in or out. This is where you have to do some convincing. NO not arguing, CONVINCING. No one will get anywhere with: "That's a stupid character, NO!" or "But I likes this character, PLEASE!"
If you want people to come to an agreement, you have to be kindly, smart, and appealing to get people to AGREE with you. Not submit to you.
Don't shove your opinion down people's throats. Try to get them to understand where you're coming from.
This is the best way we can get a roster going that everyone will be (mostly) happy with.

Just to back that up, here's an idea.
Proposal: Tingle Tingle is certainly a viable option. He's a recurring character in the Zelda series and it seems like that's not about to change. He's been playable on a couple of occasions, and I see his playability happening. I don't have all the details worked out, but I'm certain he'd use Rupees for his B attack and his balloon or his Up-B. He'd be light, weak, and rather slow, but he'd be great in the air. Hate it though I may, I seriously consider Tingle the most viable option for a future Zelda rep if Sakurai ups his cap on character representation.

I was going to post with something insightful, but I'm actually pretty busy/needed so I'll get back later.
HOWEVER, that said, I will toss in something else I wanted to add: more females. I still have that giant-ass "Super Smash Sisters" game "in-progress" on paper. I already have more fighters than Brawl had, not to mention all-female assists and a more character-driven adventure mode with stages to match. C'mon, Nintendo... if one lowly obsessed fan can do it...?

More females? I agree, how's Dixie Kong sound? She was planned to have been in Brawl anyway. Plus she's the third Kong to be the star of a game.
I know some people would like to see a Diddy Dixie Kombo but I believe she could make well as a character on her own.
As for Tingle, I'm not sure. If there ever was another deserving Zelda character, it would be him for all he's done. I'll think about it. He does have potential too, but I'm not too happy about six Zelda characters either (including Sheik).

Dixie does sound good. After DK and Diddy, Dixie is the MOST frequently used Kong in the series.
Granted that, but still, Tingle is looking up the mountain. If Smash 4 gets a 5-slot cap, Tingle's the Zelda slot for sure.

Yes well if Zelda gets 5, Mario and Pokémon must too. That's probably how it should work.

I don't even think Zelda deserves five characters. All it really needs is the three main "Triforce" characters, since the surrounding cast changes with each new Zelda game. The only other thing they could do is add in yet another replacement for Toon Link if they decide to have two different Links again in the future.

Yes well if Zelda gets 5, Mario and Pokémon must too. That's probably how it should work. That's a given. I'd opt Toad, Psyduck, and Mewtwo (if they drop Lucario.) This is strictly personal and I don't have any back-up for these choices.

Tingle's the Zelda slot for sure. Or the "Tingle" slot if he becomes independent someday. Again I'm not sure if you guys are disagreeing with me, but I'm on the side of adding K. Rool first and later Dixie only if there's enough room. The lack of females shouldn't be the reason that weighs the most. And yes, she would be very cool to play as, I won't deny it.

Given that most people hate Tingle, I'd doubt he'd make it into SBB (and given that he didn't make in to Twilight Princess, I'm convinced he's been ditched for good).
Hell, I'd rather play as a Goron or something, rather than Tingle.

It's true, Tingle's next in line. But it's a matter if we really need another Zelda character.
As for K. Rool, I would say he's more deserving than Dixie but rather just as deserving. I think they're on the same level.
