With the soon to be released Pokemon Platinum on the horizon, I'd like to share a few ideas on how to stop the series from stagnating. I love the series, but its infuriating how they just recycle the same ideas over and over, just adding a few new Pokemon every time! So here's my ideas:
Viewpoint First, we should get rid of the isometric birds-eye-view. I think it would be pretty cool if we could have an over-the-shoulder third-person viewpoint. The DS should be able to handle it, and I think it would give us the opportunity to be more immersed in the world of Pokemon.
Training Additionally to Pokemon levelling up, I think we should be able to help them train to strengthen their attacks as well. For example, if you had a Pokemon with water gun or hyperbeam, take them to a designated training area and a minigame starts - use watergun to knock over targets, shooting gallery style! A variety of different minigames for most moves, and more training means that those moves will be more effective in battle!
Friendship Points Nintendo should love this. The more you bond with a Pokemon, through training, grooming etc, the more friendship points you get for that Pokemon. When you get to a certain amount, your Pokemon will get stuff, like more resistance to certain attacks, more speed, eventually leading up to a 5th space for Pokemon moves! Four moves is just not enough.
More ideas soon! What do you think? And do you guys have any ideas?

Being able to walk diagonally, would be nice! I've never understood why I can do it in LoZ: Link's Awakening, (which came out in 1993, BTW), but I can't do it in Pokemon! (Was there some ancient king of Kanto/Johto/Hoenn/Sinnoh who decreed that people who walk diagonally would be put to death or something?)
EDIT: Oh, and when it's raining/sunny/hailing/blowing a sandstorm, I don't want to have to be told AT THE START OF EVERY FUCKING TURN!

Not a fan of any of those ideas, really. Don't want to have to put up with the DS's shitty 3D, to spam a minigame to make my attacks stronger, and friendship stuff exists for certain Pokemon evolutions already (don't need 5 moves).
I do want to see a Pokemon spinoff that allows you to battle real time and use the environment to you're advantage ala the battles in the show, though. Make that happen. And of course the obligatory console rpg/mmo. That can be 3d. And awesome.

I'd like to see battles styled after Golden Sun. Evolving could also use some 3D effects.

Totally agree that environment should be more of a factor in battles. Whenever I'm battling in the sea, it always amuses me that my rock-types can stand on the surface of the water and not sink

About third-person viewpoint, I'd first want the games to let you move in many directions while in top-view. Like in Phantom Hourglass and Pokémon Ranger.
About training, I think it's somewhat boring having to battle specific Pokémon to raise specific stats. Effort values are an existing notion in Pokémon games that remains semi-hidden after all these years, and for efficient battling, the correct distribution of stats is important. But why not give the option of using shooting galleries and stuff for this goal? I think it's an fun idea, not for improving moves, but maybe for raising stats.
I'm not sure about the 5th move slot... Stat-wise, it may be worth it now that damage-dealing moves are split into Physical and Special. But type-wise, some Pokémon may get too much advantage by enabling them to use up to 5 types.
Terrains and their influence in battles have been present since the previous generation. However, they have been of very little use. Not only they affect just about three moves, but terrains other than the regular one are absent in Gyms and Pokémon Leagues. That's the default terrain in Wi-Fi battles, too, which seems to be fair, but we may come up with ideas to use varied terrains and keep battles fair.

I'd like there to actually be real animations for Pokemon, like in the 3D Stadium games. I don't see why they can't do that.

I'd rather there be a different style of battling, at least in the 3D games. You'd actually control the Pokemon this way.
Some Pokemon, like Cloyster, could have "weak points" (like its head). See, that is the kind of battling I'd rather have.

I'd like seasons to be a factor in a new Pokemon game.
It would be neat to see certain Pokemon evolve differently in certain seasons. Or some Pokemon would take different appearances depending on the season, like Oddish would have brownish orange leaves in the Fall.
Of course certain Pokemon would only appear in certain seasons. And some become more scarce. And in certain seasons Pokemon can be at their highest level.
BREEDING:
I want them to get rid of that whole incense thing. Just have baby Pokemon automatically happen. A Snorlax doesn't need Full Incense to give birth to a Munchlax.
Pokemon have an Egg limit. They can't make more than 5 eggs each, some can only make 1 egg each. Dittos can make up to 10.
EVOLUTIONS:
I'd like them to change certain evolutions. Like certain Pokemon are no longer required to hold an item then traded to evolve. You just simply trade them. Get rid of Dawn and Dusk Stones, that's what Sun and Moon Stones are for.
GENDERS: Make more evident gender differences, like instead of a smaller mustache on Kadabra, just get rid of it all together.
Male Kirlia's automatically evolve into Gallade. Female Snorunts automatically evolve into Froslass. Only female Bunearys can evolve into Lopunny, and males evolve into something different.
Machop and the evos are now only male.

I hate how they've become determined to not let evolutions occur in a way they wouldn't previously because some whiny person is going to apparently go "oh leafeon cant evolve with a leaf stone because when i used my leaf stone on eevee in blue it didnt evolve" or something. Similarly, "wobbuffet babies cant be wynauts as when you breed a wobbuffet in silver it wouldnt make sense". Its so ridiculous, espeically when you consider the fact nobody cares about it when Pokemon gain moves they couldn't learn in a previous game. And its the same concept. Disagree on egg limits though. Why do they need to be implemented at all?

That seems to be the intention indeed, to preserve some kind of continuity with previous generations in all forms of media. I wouldn't mind that, though there are two notable contradictions and they are Lickitung being able to learn Rollout or Piloswine being able to learn AncientPower in the past, when Lickilicky and Mamoswine didn't exist yet. I'm not sure why Game Freak deems incenses so necessary. All I know is that some moves can be learned only in those baby stages by leveling up, and that some incense babies can inherit moves that their evolved forms can't.

Make console RPG's like Final Fantasy 7. Except not as FF7. Also, Game Freak deems incense as necessary because saying "Your Wynaut needs to develop out of the deformities your Wobbuffets gave it when they smoked the reefer during sex" wouldn't bode well with parents.

I don't know what will bring me back to Pokemon. I haven't played since LeafGreen. Its gotten too complex with all these changes with physical/special moves and having to have the National Dex just to have Pokemon evolve or to have baby Pokemon. Its not like you need to have a biology book to know how to make babies. It just happens naturally.

having to have the National Dex just to have Pokemon evolve or to have baby Pokemon. Hey, what Pokémon? You can breed as soon as you get to Solaceon Town. Unless you mean that certain Pokémon you want to evolve / produce Eggs aren't available before obtaining the National Pokédex.
