They are two different boys, living in two different towns with two different families - who have two different adventures connected only by their prime enemy - Giygas, Giegue, Gyiyg, or whatever you want to call him.

As for what's different about their appearance, my sister (a huge Mother fan) explained this to me: Ninten has spikier hair than Ness. That's it.

Her default name is Green. Blue is the default name for the rival of Red/Blue/FireRed/LeafGreen. Well, in America anyway. I'm not sure about the rest of the world.
