Yes, I am as well curious about TEi's thoughts on Zelda's role this go-around. I suppose it wouldn't be a spoiler to talk about it, since Ninty sent out a damned press release about it. XD In case some people would consider it such, though, I'll refrain for a moment until I remember my font colors.

Well I guess Zelda finally got the role of her life and it only cost her just that!

Hmm...interesting.
Has Nintendo realized how shitty a character "Zelda" has been over the past few years? Are they making up for the obscene treatment of the character in Phantom Hourglass? Did they actually read my article and take it to heart?
Probably not on all three counts. But I have to admit, Spirit Tracks!"Zelda" intrigues me. I was initially going to pass up on the game, but Nintendo may have just tempted me back something proper. I'll save judgment for after I've played the game and seen how this "Zelda" acts, but so far I'll remain passively optimistic.

Well, I'm just going to roll with my thoughts here.
I think that Zelda's role here is a step in the right direction, but still manages to have her ending up being captured to make it work. Sure, "spirit" Zelda will always be at your side, transforming into the Phantom at times and offering advice, but wouldn't it be nice if the ENTIRETY of Zelda could be with you? Her physical body along for the ride?
Eh. I still think this Zelda's too gimmicky for me, anyway.

Typically, once a "Zelda" has been kidnapped, she's useless up until the end of the game, where she's (always) a deus ex machina, which certainly doesn't help her case for being a shoddy female character. Making such a drastic turn-over for a mostly useless character is something Nintendo has to take in baby steps, I guess - which is fine by me, as long as they keep going.
Again, though, I'll reserve final judgment for later on. This is just my current thoughts XD

Baby steps are an ample description of this direction. Let's hope it does indeed keep going beyond this. ^_^

Well I always mention this, but Zelda helps many times at the end of these games. OoT she helps you escape the tumbling tower, WW she hits Ganondorf with the Light Arrows, and the same with Twilight Princess. So she not as useless as say... Peach is in a traditional Mario game.

Well I always mention this, but Zelda helps many times at the end of these games. OoT she helps you escape the tumbling tower, WW she hits Ganondorf with the Light Arrows, and the same with Twilight Princess. So she not as useless as say... Peach is in a traditional Mario game. Like I said above, actions like that make her a deus ex machina; she's popping in at the last minute to provide Link with INCREDIBAL (support) POWAR that he wouldn't have had on his own and thusly pins Ganondorf down for the appropriate Hero of [insert whatever Link is the hero of in this game] beatdown. Further to point, Link didn't need "Zelda's" help to whup Ganon's ass in LoZ or LttP, which makes the latent application of Deus ex Zelda circa 1998 even more astonishing. Deus ex machinas are never ever ever a good thing when applied to any literary aspect; they imply a character's inability to solve a problem by themselves, which in turn implies poor storytelling - even something with such generic story and character development as Zelda games, and "Zelda" being one works against her favor. Think of it like this: "Zelda's" only character traits are Getting Kidnapped and God-Moding. And where the hell was all this strength/power when she got kidnapped in the first place, you know? If she exhibited that sort of ability any earlier than the final boss fight, then I'd be inclined to agree with you on her (not so) uselessness. Spirit Tracks is again a step in the right direction: Zelda can apparently possess a Phantom and take it over, and seeing as how that's a major game mechanic and we're bound to find out about it early on, it strips away the "deus ex machina" aspect. And sure, she still dies gets kidnapped, but that doesn't prevent her from being a constant presence throughout the game (so far as we know). As for Peach...well, I have a lot to say about her, but I'll save that for a LVLs. post and link it back to here when I have.

Zelda's still been more than a mere tool in recent games, despite her being stuck in those character traits. But yeah, Spirit Tracks is doing the right thing and making Zelda really really up front in the action.
I'm very excited for Spirit Tracks... this will be a great way to return to my favorite Zelda art style after skipping out on Phantom Hourglass.

It's safe to say that this game is shaping up hard. Zelda teams up with Link (her spirit, at least*). Reminds me of something I thought up with the two going around dungeons, and switching between them, Pikmin 2-style. *Drat, just when we come sooo close to this sort of thing, there's something small like this that has to hinder where it's truly at! Possible Spoilers: Calling it now: the final battle following the Demon King is a fusion of the Demon King and Chancellor Cole - Dark Cole.

Yeah... I always thought the 100 years thing was a bit weird. Nearly every Zelda game seems to take place 100 years after the last one...

What I really often wonder is what exactly goes on through the many years in the land between each game.
Between OOT and WW: I take it some mad, mad scientist invented a sort of "toon ray" to fire at the place and turn it into what it is in Wind Waker.
