I say shake things up even more than that.
Tingle vs. Donkey Kong.

Ideally I'd have preferred a 32-bit remake of Donkey Kong 1994 with even more levels added in instead of Mario vs. Donkey Kong, which I think could never stand up to the former.
Had my wish come true we might've gotten a Donkey Kong Jr. 1994 (or Advance, whatever you want to call it) as a follow-up. Would've made perfect sense too since the first game ended on a cliffhanger.

You know what needs to come back? The animal buddy system. They were a HUGE part of the SNES games, then they just sort of... went away.

Totally agree. I want more animal buddies to come back.
Preferably, a couple buddies that haven't seen the light of day since they started, like Expresso and Winky.

I agree, on the condition that Expresso is at least able to jump on enemies. YOU'RE WEARING SNEAKERS, BIRD. THAT'S MORE THAN THE KONGS HAVE. Actually, you know what I'd REALLY like to see? "New Donkey Kong Country", in the same sort of vein as "New Super Mario Brothers". Flash it up with graphics if you want, but bring back the old DKC gameplay on steroids: More playable kongs, more animal buddies, etc. And give K. Rool a new identity. Whatever happened to that gimmick?

It went away after DK64, though it made a cameo in that Mario baseball game and almost made another in that cancelled DK racing game. Personally, I think that's a gimmick that they should be kinda cautious with.

Yeah, I guess so. Baron K. Roolenstein WAS reaching.

Animal buddies never really went away, there just hasn't been a game since Jungle Beat which could feasibly use them.

What about a climbing animal buddy, like a leopard?
Thought.

Mattdog from the DKU actually drew some really awesome fanart of some Animal Buddies he came up with, including a hummingbird (Enguarde in the air!), a red version of Rattly that's use as a whip (like the Rope Snake), a giraffe that can be used to cross gaps and climb higher (based on the unused buddy mentioned in Rare's Scribes), a larger male elephant that acts like a cross between Ellie and Rambi, and Troff the Hippo from DK64, and that apparently scrapped Ram Bunkshus character from DKL . He also took the whale and the squirrel "animal buddies" from DKJB and redesigned them to look more like actual DKC characters as opposed to Yoshi's Story rejects, whether that tickles your fancy or not. If you want to see them, I suggest you just browse the Art Thread over there if you want to bother. ;D He can do that in DKL.

Well, that's good to know. I've actually thought of some ways some animal buddies could be incorporated into King of Swing/Jungle Climber: Squawks would play pretty much the same, Squitter would constantly move forward as you steer him with the R and L buttons. etc. Speaking of the new games.... Does K. Rool still do fake-outs? Each Donkey Kong game up to at least DK64 had some kind of fake-out by K. Rool

What do you mean by fake-out?

Donkey Kong Country: The fake "Kredits".
DKC2: The Stronghold Non-showdown and the multiple times he gets up in K. Rool Duel (Plus, in a way, him showing up in the lost world).
DKC3: Being the one behind Kaos (this one wasn't that big a surprise).
DK64: King Kut-out.

I think it suits K. Rool quite nicely to try to trick you and pull a cheap shot like in DKC. Its not quite the same in the other games.
