Okay the story has been officially released but here's the wierd part... Its confusing!
If we remember, the Star Festival only happens once in 100 years, but according to this story its happening again.
What's weirder is that Mario meets his little Luma friend again. But doesn't remember him! Its like Galaxy 1 never happened.
Immediately people are coming up with theories. Two plausible ones occurred:
1. At the end of Galaxy 1 the universe was reborn "Welcome new Galaxy!" and that the events reset themselves.
2. Miyamoto didn't give a shit and reused the same story despite not making any sense in relation with the other game.

It's the latter- Miyamoto has said he wanted to keep this game as story free as possible.

Still, why make it so that it screws up everything from the first game?
Have the same characters but like they are meeting for the first time? Explicitly say its only 100 years but do it again?
And its not like they are forgetting the 100 years part, they are saying it again in this story too!

Don't worry about it, man. Mario games are best known for not making sense as is. When you're trying to make sense of a Mario game, all you'd be doing is trying to solve a puzzle that just doesn't want to be solved.
Mario's world is essentially kind of a Wonderland in itself (the sewers to the Mushroom Kingdom in Mario Bros. arcade as the proverbial rabbit hole there).

Those two have the right of it. The Mario series has never been about consistency in any other area than fun gameplay. If you really looked into it, the story of the Mario games have more holes than a slice of Swiss cheese. Anyway, a bit more information to share. It's been confirmed by The Tanooki that Luigi will be in Galaxy 2.

Not really, the stories have been so simple that there was no way of them having plot holes. They are just one after another of Bowser kidnapping Peach or whatever, they never clashed with the other games like this. This is the first time I believe... perhaps because its a direct sequel.
It would be like in Galaxy if Bowser Jr. said "Who are you? Are you a bad man trying to take my Mama away from me?" right before you battle him. You'd be like, "WTF? Bowser Jr. already knows Mario. Why is he saying that?"

If it sounds too easy, try it like this.
Galaxy killed itself in the end by destroying the universe and recreating it shortly before the events transpired, kinda like Sonic '06, but while Sonic '06 killed itself because the villain was eliminated before he could become a threat (the time travel paradox of preemptive suicide,) Galaxy 1 simply nixed the events, so whatever happened in Galaxy 1 could (and apparently will) happen again, kinda like the Song of Time in Majora's Mask, but being played by the universe. Now, it's apparent that this has affected the universe, but again, Cosmic Song of Time. Things change to prevent moondown, the only difference being whether it's the universe or the hero who makes the change. Since it's the universe, the environment changes to allow the change in results. The hero would only have items he didn't have before, such as a Powder Keg license.

Who even cares? I just want to throw Mario around some more weird-ass levels.
So long as we get new levels and some new ideas, I'd be happy reliving the events of Super Mario Galaxy, Super Mario World, whatever really!
Well... not Super Paper Mario... I wouldn't want to relive that.

This point is valid. If you're looking for plot in Mario, you're missing the point.

Not looking for plot. You're missing the point. I'm saying this is the first time the plot has screwed things up. Ugh... Fryguy. Whenever you get a chance to bash SPM huh?

I will take every chance to bash SPM. What I haven't told you is I have been helping my girlfriend play through it again, and it's just as bad the second time.
I wouldn't say it's the first time the plot has screwed things up, because we don't know what the plot is yet. We have assumptions based on a very brief plot synopsis. So saying it contradicts anything before actually playing through the game to see if it explains anything is ridiculous.

True we don't have the full details yet. I'm probably jumping the gun but...
When has the plot screwed things up before? I can't remember an official Mario game that has done that. They are too simple for that to happen.
That's one good thing about simple stories, the canon can't get screwed up because there barely is any.

To be fair, the Star Festival technically happened a second time during the last stage of SMG1. If it is happening again at the beginning of SMG2, then it's either
A) Because the universe was re-created.
or
B) Not the same Star Festival. Maybe it's some other celebration.

Maybe they're just celebrating it again since the last festival was kinda ruined by Bowser's blitzkrieg
