Stories are pretty important to me. I don't read, so I get my imagination fuel from movies and video games. When I play a game, I need to know why I'm invading a government base, or why I'm rescuing a princess who doesn't put out.

Well its not always a question of "why am I doing this" but also "why are THEY doing this"
On top of that, its getting to know the world and characters better, realizing there's more than just a plumber and a princess.

I'll throw in that one thing I'm really liking about the Mario games we're getting now is that they're expanding upon the field of the friendly-type characters. Piantas, Nokis, Bees, and so on.
Way back before, there weren't very many of anything like that really...

Way back before, there weren't very many of anything like that really... Well, that's only partially true. If you only want to focus on the "main series" games, you could argue that Toad, Sub-Con, the Kings, Yoshi, the Penguins, (etc. etc. in SM64) were all . If you expand outwards and include the RPGs and spinoffs we also have a lot more friendly characters come into play. I guess it's a lot easier for the 3D games to have talky characters.

Yeah but its one step back with Mario Galaxy. the characters have barely anything to say except for some advice.
In Sunshine they would actually say some funny things.

You're really nitpicking on this one, Koopaul. We already have the RPG side-series and stuff for world building. I think it's an unwritten rule that the main games have less focus on things like plot and atmosphere while the rest of the series puts that further up top.
Besides, it's not like the different sub-sections of the Mario franchise don't refer to each other enough.

Eh, the Mario platformers have never been story-reliant for me to like. Thank god for that, as they aren't anything to write home about. The majority of them are the same thing, for one - Bowser steal Princess, Mario plus accessory characters rescue. It's how Nintendo designs the worlds that captures my intrigue. A second dose of Star Festival/Luma introductions isn't going to derail my gameplay enjoyment.
I suppose I'll have to scrape up $50 for this somehow. I doubt it's going to happen until later. XD

Keep in mind though, that (apparently taking Koopaul's stand here) just because we enjoy the gameplay doesn't mean we're not allowed to enjoy the characters and their worlds as well. It's called BALANCE. Really, I thought some of you would know better than that by now.
So.......One week away in the US, eh?
On that note, I've resolved to myself not to over-excite about Mario Galaxy 2. Pre-release epicitis hurts like shit. I've been guilty of this with New SMB Wii and other games in the past. At the end of the day really, SMG2 will be just another game, nothing more.
I still do enjoy New SMB Wii and I play it on occasion (and I'll get a rise out of Galaxy 2 for sure), but not a whole lot as I did when it was out for some reason.

No beef with me. Luigi playing a bigger role makes me happy, so I understand your point. I don't think I was arguing for or against Koopaul's stance as much as presenting mine. Maybe I'm looking too much into it. XD

Besides, it's not like the different sub-sections of the Mario franchise don't refer to each other enough. Um actually yes. When did a main Mario game have any throwbacks to Paper Mario? Like even one enemy or cameo? The main series seems to completely separate itself from the other series. However it seems that other non-main series Mario games make references to each other, like the Striker Koopas in SPM, or the Star Spirits in MP5.

Whomp's Fortress confirmed in SMG2 It disappoints me that Mario can't take that giant coin. Source: This page of Iwata Asks

Oh holy crow, that Whomp's Fortress section is the most awesome thing I've seen yet. I love that level design.
Here's hoping for something Bob-Omb Battlefield related...

Whoa, I can't believe they remade that level in this game! That's better than just a song here and there or a giant Mario sprite. Nice way to attract 90s' gamers who didn't play from Sunshine onwards.

Wait- is it a level in and of itself, or something inside another level?
