My impressions so far: - I liked the (first?) bee galaxy better than any of the two in Galaxy 1
- Tall Trunk Galaxy's physics are incredible... Whoever came up with handling that kind of "circumgravity", I applaud them.
- The first Bowser level... wow. I loved the design, the epic music, the method to open the portals and beat Bowser... Also seeing the moving blocks from SMW in 3-D and Hammer Bros. as guards of the last parts of the stage was nostalgic and extremely cool.

Ahahaha, whitened replies!
- I liked the (first?) bee galaxy better than any of the two in Galaxy 1 I haven't played those. I skipped a lot of galaxies and wanted to beat Bowser first - and unlock Luigi ASAP so that I can get ghosts ASAP - at the same time, I wanted to slow down my playing process so I get only 5 or 6 stars per day... how contradicting.
- Tall Trunk Galaxy's physics are incredible... Whoever came up with handling that kind of "circumgravity", I applaud them. Thank whoever made F-ZERO X team then. Gravity games... well, let's say Mario Galaxy series isn't the first of such Nintendo made. Far from it, really.

Also seeing the moving blocks from SMW in 3-D and Hammer Bros. as guards of the last parts of the stage was nostalgic and extremely cool. I was a bit dsappointed, actually. It has been there in SMG1 already, so I would have wanted something new. The music in SMG2 is good overall, but they went a bit overboard about remixing old music.
It's good to see Hammer Bros return.... and once again as one of the most irritating enemies. If only the Ice Flower and even the Propeller Mushroom return... game-breaking? SMG2 is broken with Yoshi anyway.

Well, sure, the force goes perpendicular on/inside the pipes in that and F-Zero tracks.
But in the other parts of the Tall Trunk Galaxy (when you ride Blimp Yoshi) I'm noticing crazy things so far that hadn't imagined before, like the force acting in the direction of the circumference rather than radially... That blew my mind.Anyway, gotta keep playing. I'm still at the beginning of World 3!

Just read another interview with the director.
"I realised that our objective isn’t telling a story, it’s making a tool."
I felt a little uneasy reading that. Something just didn't sound right.

To be fair, maybe Miyamoto realised the worst selling/received Mario games in the main series were those most centered around a storyline, see Super Mario Sunshine's fairly mediocre sales figures. Mario games aren't about story (bar RPGs), and Nintendo IS a business, they'll driven to make what the majority rather than minority wants nowadays.

I preordered the US version weeks ago and it STILL hasn't arrived yet. Meanwhile my local shop already has PAL copies for sale.

I got my copy today, but I haven't started it yet. The tin is pretty, though.

Figure of speech...
But I guess that's what you get when you buy from some Taiwanese Ebayer who doesn't charge for shipping. Also he asked me only 2 weeks ago if I was reaaaaaaally sure I had a NTSC Wii to play it on before he actually sent it over. Nice of him, but doesn't exactly speed things up...

Mario games aren't about story (bar RPGs), and Nintendo IS a business, they'll driven to make what the majority rather than minority wants nowadays. That game sold poorly because people were turned off about the idea of cleaning with a water pack. But no it wasn't the story part that bothered me, it was the "tool" part. And it's become clear when comparing Sunshine to Galaxy. The world and characters in Sunshine had "life" Galaxy's world didn't try to be anything more than an obstacle course with sign posts in the shape of characters. I blame it on this "tool" philosophy. I know those things aren't important... But it sort of is to me. I guess I love Mario's world too much.

Then...wait for IntSys or AlphaDream to make another RPG. Those are where the story and world-building is at.
Besides, would you reeeeeally want Mario's main platformers going down the same shitter than engulfed Sonic? (Though Unleashed and now Colors appears to have reversed the pattern to some degree.)

I've said this before and I'll say it again: Just because we enjoy the gameplay doesn't mean we're not allowed to enjoy the characters and the worlds.

I point out that there was ALOT of shit going down with Sonic. It's always been the more story-based of the two series, even back when the Death Egg was still running. You can tell from the continuity: Mario's games could pretty much take place in any order, while Sonic's are pretty straight-forward. Just to say, of course.

At least that was straightforward enough without getting in the way It was basically "Sonic saves animals from Eggman, Sonic and Tails save world from Eggman, Sonic and Tails must stop Eggman while avoiding Knuckles who thinks they're evil" with some other details in between. Flash forward to Sonic Adventure 2 and several games thereafter. I think the rest explains itself.
