Is this game supposed to be harder than the original? It's just, I find that some of the stars in the original (the Bouldergiest daredevil run comes to mind) are actually harder than most of the stars in SMG2...

The most difficult star in SMG1 (to me) was Luigi's Purple Coins, and I've already seen levels that are comparable or harder.

You're chased by an infinite amount of Cosmic Clones. I spent ages trying to get that star. Galaxy 2 definitely has a lot of missions that seem close to impossible, but I still managed to get 120 stars (still haven't really started the green star hunt, don't think I will ) Oh, and Squirty, Bouldergeist is back in SMG2. You fight him twice. Once in a boss run with other bosses from the first game, and again with a set time limit.

Some stars are easier to get in both games. Galaxy has some hair-tearingly hard levels thrown in at random, and Galaxy 2 takes some of those very same levels and makes them even harder.
However, as for the other junk in Galaxy 2, some are easy or straightforward, others are much harder. I actually found some of the ghost house stars to be among the hardest, and the Special World really cranked up the difficulty level.
What's interesting is the first time I played through Galaxy I got stuck at the same points everybody did: Stone Cyclone, Purple Coins on Luigi, Daredevil runs. But I have just played both games all the way through in reverse order, and those levels were a breeze. I put it down to Galaxy 2 having a much more friendly difficulty curve, and once you've beat its hardest levels, Galaxy 1 doesn't pose much of a challenge at all.

The most difficult star in SMG1 (to me) was Luigi's Purple Coins, and I've already seen levels that are comparable or harder. The most difficult star in SMG1 to me was... well, I'm not quite sure. Bouldergeist daredevil isn't difficult at all if you can fight him in a certain way (stay close to him, circle around him, swing the Boo bombs when possible) and Luigi's purple coins... It's not difficult for me, considering that it took me only 4 attempt as Mario and no retries at all with Luigi. It's not like you need to get 150 coins. I'd actually say the Shiverburn purple coins as the most difficult stars (but it's only personal experience), since while it's not difficult, it took me much time just to figure out where the coins are. And for SMG2, it's definitely Grandmaster, then Stone Cyclone. Especially Green Star 1. In overall, I think SMG2 is more difficult. And I do like difficult Mario games (since the norm for Super Mario games is easy).

You mean Freezeflame (Galaxy 1)? I'm currently beyond 200 stars Almost everytime you people post, I hear about Grandmaster Galaxy. Can't wait to get there!

Ack. The recurring ice/fire theme confused me. I think there are 5 stages based on ice and/just fire in SMG1 and SMG2. It's bound to create confusion. Yeah, I mean Freezeflame, the one in Galaxy 1.
Oh, just so you can hear about it again, Grandmaster Galaxy. It's difficult, blah blah blah. Let's see how will you fare on that.

A lot of Daredevil runs are incredibly tricky in SMG2, especially against Megahammer (3rd world's end castle). Another mission I've had much trouble on was the Tall Trunk slide, especially its Purple Coin run. Trial and error all over; Must...resist...Cosmic Guide... Anybody else had difficulty on that one?

Tall Trunk's slide took a few lives from my tally, but you know what? It's hard to get frustrated with a level that plays an awesome remix of SM64's Slider. It's just an excuse to keep listening to it, over and over! ;D

Well, I've got Rolling Coaster Galaxy for that, which I've gotten too used to. Maybe I just haven't played Tall Trunk's slide as much.

I don't really care for Slider in Rolling Coaster because of the tempo-change depending on how fast the ball moves. Granted, it's still a (herf) ballin' level, but I'd have prefered that the music stay consistent.

YL, I was able to grab Green Star 1 of Stone Cyclone by using a triple jump and spinning. What was your method?
I just met Grandmaster Galaxy... Just one more star! And I swear I'll get it!

Triple jump and spinning. Took about 20 tries.
I didn't have much trouble with even Grandmaster compared to that devilish Green Star.
This is just crazy.

I just cleared it 100%! ^_^ It took me like 5 game overs, but I made it in the end. After trying over and over, I began finding the best paths and actions to take in specific places of the level... That experience was just like being back in the days of Super Mario Bros. 3 or, why not, The Lost Levels (as difficult as a Lost Levels world indeed... The Hammer Bros. contribute to that too). That perfect selection of background songs was an incentive to be successful too. I hadn't downloaded the OST of the game, so I had no idea those Galaxy 1 songs, the best ones, were in the game too, not counting remixes. This made my night... Playing the stage itself was the big prize, and not just beating it ;D I'll admit that I used the crouching trick to beat the Boomerang Bros, though... So I respect anyone who didn't
