From Cubed3(The current title may not be the best name for this thread, as it's only quoted from one person working on Super Street Fighter IV 3DS and not someone higher up, but it's difficult to make a good title for this thread.) Capcom's Yoshinori Ono has confirmed interest in a Nintendo x Capcom fighter. At the Nintendo 3DS conference in Amsterdam yesterday, Cubed3 attended Ono-san's roundtable session and managed to ask the key question: "Considering you are trying to make Street Fighter IV 3DS accessible to a wider audience, did you ever think about including Nintendo characters to broaden the appeal?"
Rather than brushing the question off completely, instead Ono-san reacted very positively, saying he would like to make a Nintendo x Capcom fighting game and that the idea should be pitched to Nintendo of Japan and Masahiro Sakurai.

Well, Ono is the director of Street Fighter IV, so I think he's got a high enough position to make a claim like that and not get bowled over. As for the claim, I would be all over it. No question. Hell, I dream about that concept all the time. XD

I remember some Capcom employee mentioning something like this before. I think he wanted either a Namco, Square or Nintendo crossover, perhaps this is the same guy.
Though I can't picture Capcom doing anything else but a 2D fighter ...and I can't really see Mario doing crazy air combo's in Ryu face either (but I'll be nerdjizzing through the roof if they end up doing something either way)

Some fairly unlikely Nintendo characters translate to 2D... pretty well...

Hecks yeah, sign me up.

By 2d I actually meant classic health bar fighter, with echoing Mario yelp when his lifebar's drained an' all.
Anyway I kinda hope there'll actually be talks about this together with Sakurai, because then the concept MIGHT just shift to 'fuck it lets just make a new Smash Bros with some Capcom dudes'.

...Ryu and Ken for Smash 4?
But really, this should worth a shot. Fighting games are something Nintendo lacked (well, Nintendo desn't participate in a lot of genres...), but that doesn't mean it won't work, right?

If Nintendo and Capcom took the Street Fighter x Tekken / Tekken x Street Fighter route, I don't think the Nintendo-produced version would be a true Smash Bros. game. It would play similarly, perhaps, but it would be more like a spin-off than a proper sequel. I'd actually prefer that; I want the Smash Bros. series to evolve of its own accord, not just for the sake of a (truly epic) crossover.

I just can't wait to see which are chose to battle who. (-lvl-) Kirby will definitely be in. And I'm sure there will be more other Nintendo-characters this time. Takamaru, I'm looking right at you. The only way there would be a lot of obscure characters is if it was like NamcoXCapcom.

Maybe?
One thing: maybe if... there will be an ALL NEW fighting system! No VS, No Smash Bros. Something just all new?
Me wants Rival School-characters too

Thinking about fighting games after watching the first part of this and this whole video is beginning to scare me, because of "balance". If some of the characters can't be balanced enough, then why not replace some with protagonists and mascots of lesser-known games and franchises? Besides ongoing flagship ones (e.g. Mario, Zelda, Pokemon, Kirby, etc.), if they mostly allow characters from upcoming or recently created games for advertising purposes, then they should wait until a good number of them are created. For those that pay tribute to the NES era (e.g. Ice Climbers, R.O.B., Pit, etc.), why not add someone that pays tribute to other eras besides Mr. Game & Watch, like the Game Boy era? Despite the GB being Nintendo's best-selling platform, its library of games aren't as popular as the NES library. The upcoming 3DS will allow players to download GB games from the Virtual Console, so Nintendo should advertise for the GB games added to them. Some considered Pikachu and Kirby two of the GB representatives, but they are a lot more than that, they are like the Mario and Zelda characters. The only GB representatives I can think of are Alice from Balloon Kid/Balloon Fight GB (but most people want a generic Balloon Fighter) and Muddy/Mogurana from Mole Mania (one of Game Boy's last hopes before Pokemon).

Huge problem parrot: A big chunk of the "obscure" characters you want for "representation" just wouldn't work in a traditional fighting game. Roughly 2/3 of them are below average human height, and each Capcom crossover usually only has about one or two (for example, MvC1 had Mega Man and Roll, while MvC3 has Viewtiful Joe and Arthur).
This isn't even an all-Nintendo celebration like Smash Bros. is either. It's a crossover with another company. When approaching what kind of characters should be included you need different sensibilities.

Plus, when it comes down to it, Pokemon defined the Gameboy. Well, that and Tetris. If you really wanted a character to rep the Gameboy for whatever fanboy reason, you're gonna get a Pikachu because those other games never survived.

If I had to choose a Pokemon character, I'd prefer it be Mewtwo. Not only did he get shafted from Brawl, he's also a first-genner and one of the most iconic 'mons in the entire series that also has a humanoid physique.
