How can we assume this is your standard 2D Vs. Fighter title anyway? It could be something completely different, like Namco x Capcom or Mario and Sonic at the Olympics. Stranger things have happened.
(also, first post in FOREVER. heh... amused)

Remember when Nintendo said they would only allow characters from third-party games and franchises that were released for a Nintendo platform? I wonder what games and franchises would Nintendo refuse to let Capcom represent in Nintendo X Capcom? They might include those from TvC that never had any of their games released for a Nintendo platform. Characters from the Rival Schools series is a good example.
For some SSBB playable characters that Nintendo might not add into this next crossover with Capcom or another SSB title, all I can think of are Lucario and Jigglypuff, due to Pokemon Black & White being mostly filled with new Pokemon, with very few from the predecessors. For other possible reasons, Lucario was most likely used to promote his appearances in the anime show and film (mainly Riley's Lucario, which Riley was also in Di/Pe/Pl), while Jigglypuff is probably based on the one in the anime that put everyone nearby to sleep before drawing on their faces with a black marker. However, I'm sure Sakurai kept adding Jigglypuff, due to being one of the original 12 characters from SSB64.
Toon Link might be another character that will not appear; however, while he and Young Link are very similar, and while there will be a 3D version of Ocarina of Time for the Nintendo 3DS, I'm sure Nintendo will switch back Toon Link with Young Link.
But advertising and/or promoting doesn't always have to be necessary. FryGuy64 and some others were correct on the staff adding one or few characters, due to liking them.

This wouldn't be the same. Smash Bros. was/is a game built on Nintendo's history. Nintendo & Capcom would be a celebration of two companies. It'd be more valid for Capcom to put in a representative of franchises unavailable on Nintendo consoles because of this.

Although it could be seen as a viable opportunity to celebrate their history working with the company. A lot of Capcom's brands are known for appearing on Nintendo consoles (Mega Man being the ur-example).
Could also be a fine chance to include characters who've only ever appeared on Nintendo consoles, such as Kevin Stryker from Street Fighter 2010.

So... sorry to revive this topic AND sort of return unannounced, but I was thinking about this sort of a concept today and got wondering about one thing in particular: in Namco x Capcom, the characters pair off from either company and get little backstories as they go through the game and fight one another. How would the Nintendo and Capcom characters pair off? I was honestly just thinking Nintendo only, but curious who would go with who.
I'd share my thoughts on the Nintendo only team ups, but throwing in Capcom mixes those up quite a bit. For example, I could totally see Ryu from Breath of Fire and Link as a duo, and mixing characters like Zelda and Morrigan together could be quite interesting. I also must say that I LOVE the idea of Dedede and Bowser on a team together, regardless of where it's happening.

Actually, you just made me think of something.
Kirby and Mega Man both have the ability to copy attacks from defeated opponents. But that begs the question, if Kirby swallowed Mega Man, what Copy Ability would he get? And likewise, if Mega Man defeated Kirby, what new weapon would he acquire?
Or would they both simply nullify each other, creating a rift and causing a chain reaction that would unravel the very fabric of the space-time continuum, and destroy the entire universe? (Granted, that's a worst-case scenario. The destruction might in fact be very localized, limited to merely our own galaxy.)

Copying isn't Mega Man's main power. Its the Mega Buster. Kirby would get that. Also Kirby is not a robot so I don't think Mega Man could copy him. If he could it would probably be a suction cannon or something.

I hate it when people think the two go together like bread and butter. So they both have arm cannons, what's your point? Equally as universe destroying would be like... Haggar as one of the Mario Bros. That would be some serious minddickery.

Actually... I'd say Mega Man/Samus makes just as much sense. Kirby copies his enemies' abilities, Mega Man takes their weapons. His arm cannon gets upgrades allowing him to use it to fire different things... just like Samus.

So... Kirby + Samus = Mega Man? It would be pretty cool if they did something like Street Fighter X Tekken and Tekken X Street Fighter... Nintendo would make a Nintendo X Capcom game where it plays like the Super Smash Bros. games while Capcom would make a Capcom X Nintendo game where it plays like Marvel vs. Capcom games and Street Fighter games. Both games would feature different rosters with different characters and some characters are playable in both games such as Mario and Ryu (Street Fighter).
