I don't like Sonic, so maybe I just don't understand, but this seems like the most pointless thing ever. Sonic's new design is barely changed from his old design - and its better anyway. Mario has also had a similar evolution in design. So has Pikachu. So has pretty much every long time video game character. Seeing the two together just shows how comparatively shitty old Sonic looks, and the idea that bringing him back is this huge moment proves to me how truly stupid the wider Sonic fanbase is.

^ Frankly, I'm with you, and I do like Sonic. I don't see why so many fans think that using an older design would magically make a Sonic game good. On top of that, Sonic has had a lot more than just one design change over the years, but for some reason, fans fixate the one where he got green eyes.
As for its implementation in the games, I have no idea where they're going with it. The first thing to spring to my mind was that one Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie where the newer Turtles met the older Turtles.

I like chubby Sonic because he looks goofier. I like goofy
But yeah who knows the game might have cutscenes of chubby Sonic having an emotional meltdown and he ends up kissing chubby human princesses or some shit.

I meant the mechanics of it. The trailer shows Sonic sliding and drifting, and it uses the same sound effects as in Colors. Plus, the landscape he's running across is very linear. I took that to mean the game would play like Colors. Is that how the daytime portions of Unleashed played? Yes. Also, I like Chubby 90s Sonic due to his resemblence to Felix the Cat and other 20-30s cartoon characters. As an animator/animation enthusiast it would stand to reason that I'd prefer that over his EXTREEEEEEEME redesign. That, and the games that starred Chubby 90s Sonic were better in general.

Like I said, Sonic X2 will likely not be anything spectacular, but I too partake in faggotry that is nostalgic in origin. I grew up with Sonic looking like that, and Nester raises an excellent point. It's the same sensation one has when watching the 1980s Ninja Turtles teaming up with the 2000s Ninja Turtles; the latter is a visual evolution of the former, true, but I was there in the 80s, man. Those were my Ninja Turtles.

I thought this article from Destructoid about Sonic's design was pretty good. It brings up the point that lots of characters have had their designs change over time (eg Mario) and yet Sonic fans complain endlessly about it. Green-eyes Sonic is fine! Get over it!

See, I love Sonic and I grew up with that old style design and I'm a massive animation geek, but I feel exactly the same way. 90s Sonic looks like a 5-year-old's drawing of a cat standing in a harsh wind.

One thing I find interesting to note about Sonic's design is that the shift was not gradual. Sure, early Sonic had been faced out by the mid 90s for a natural evolution, but then Adventure came and completely rediesigned him. It's not like Mario, really.

Sure, early Sonic had been faced out by the mid 90s for a natural evolution, but then Adventure came and completely rediesigned him. It's not like Mario, really. Perhaps, but how radical is the change? I mean, take an old Walt sketch of Mickey, give it to Marv Wolfman and say "Draw him in your style," you'll still have Mickey. Same request for Action Comics 1 to Akira Toriyama , you'll get the same Superman, just manga-style. Same stuff, new art. It's just how things work. With Pac Man, for example, the changes aren't just "new artist" progression, things happened. Pac Man has eyes and limbs. Sonic...had a growth spurt and lost weight. These aren't major changes to Sonic. His spikes, his shoes, his gloves, his blueness, everything is still there. He just got a few design tweaks. It happens. No one complained that Mario got blue eyes in 3D, because he simply progressed from drawings and sprites to a fully-3D model. That eye-color is an issue to some Sonic fans is pathetic, and, to the more intelligent fans (they exist, I actually go to a forum full of 'em,) an embarrassment. Though this movie highlights the differences, really, if you pay attention you'll notice: None of them are anything but stylistic.

The eye color never bothered me. I just think Sonic looks better with a more circular physique and a regular smirk rather than a beanpole build and Nike swooth teeth. In all honesty, it actually gives him wider appeal despite his entire origin being based on "attitude".

That article articulated so well every single argument I had ready and waiting if I needed to use them.

In all honesty, it actually gives him wider appeal despite his entire origin being based on "attitude". I've seen a few people say this, but I cannot see the reasoning behind it, if any. The range of appeal for classic Sonic seems to be limited entirely to people who owned a Mega Drive in 1993.

I must be the odd case: never played a Megadrive Sonic game until I bought Sonic Mega Collections, months after Sonic Adventure1/2 (I found the old games a lot better then and still start up Mega Collections now and then. Adventure.... not so much)
Really the only thing that bothers me with the later design is his torso. IT EES SOOO TINY
But anyway I think the many enemy designs are more important than the hedgehog himself. Goofy multicoloured badniks give the enemies a lot more character than a bunch of same-y droid bots.

New details and a new trailer here. So, it seems you can choose to play as either Classic Sonic or Modern Sonic. If you choose Classic, the game is a 2D side-scroller, and if you choose Modern, the game is in full 3D. Set across three defining eras from 20 years of Sonic the Hedgehog video game history, the instantly recognizable environments of Sonic Generations have been re-built in stunning HD and are now playable in both classic side scrolling 2D from 1991, as well as modern 3D style found in Sonic’s most recent adventures. Each incarnation of Sonic in Sonic Generations comes complete with his trademark special move, Spin Dash and Spin Attack for Classic Sonic, and the Homing Attack and Sonic Boost for Modern Sonic. An innovative new interactive menu system allows for complete immersion in Sonic’s universe with favorite characters and hidden treasures gradually being revealed throughout the game. Also, it seems to be confirmed that the game is only for X360 and PS3. Oh well. I'm happy with my exclusive Sonic Colors.
