PLEASE tell me it's not some dumb-ass plot element. Dumb-ass plot element, you say? Nope, no dumb-ass plot elements here.

Sonic and his friends have been time travelling regularly since 1993, anyway. At this point time travel is as mundane to them as grocery shopping.

More gameplay footage of both classic and modern:
Classic-style looks reminiscent of that one fan mock-up of Sonic & Knuckles:

Ugh, this is just sad. Sega has been trying so hard to make a good Sonic game by listening to the "fans". Everyone always says how good Sonic was in the Genesis days, so what does Sega do? Make all these side scrolling Sonic games and they end up playing like shit. (Sonic 4 anyone?)
I freaking LOVED Adventure. I played and replayed that game so many times. Yeah, the Big levels were pretty dull and the Amy levels were annoying, but there were only like 5 of them. The best thing about Adventure was...well, the Adventure! Running around Station Square, seeing Eggman build his empire in the Mystic Ruins, not to mention all the different perspectives storywise, it was a very fun game.
I'm not gonna lie, I haven't playing a 3D Sonic game in awhile, but...ugh. I watch reviews and I can tell Sega has no idea how to please their fans.

They're aware they screwed up with Sonic 4 though and are 'looking into it' for this game.
Which is great cause the old school Sonic levels look fun. I heart 2d platformers

I just noticed how everything in classic Sonic's stage just looks so large compared to the Genesis levels. I don't like it that much, it makes Sonic look tiny. I mean look at those titanic loop-dee-loops and those swinging platforms could fit the entire Sonic cast on them! Not to mention the huge amounts of empty space where Sonic is just running forward or being bounced across a gigantic chasm.
Genesis Green Hill Zone was very compact, all the levels were. They were still big but managed to cram a lot more stuff in them by making all the obstacles smaller so you weren't just running through a lot of empty space.

On the other hand, running through a colossal Metropolis Zone would be amazing, or Mushroom Hiill Zone, or Hydrocity, or....
Just because it doesn't work with one level doesn't mean it doesn't work for all.

No it makes the gameplay boring. You see in the genesis games every obstacle or platform was one after another, placed very close to each other and made every moment of the course full of content. But here the paths are stretched so wide that there is a lot of nothing from one obstacle to another.
It would be like playing Super Mario Bros and having to run a mile before reaching the next block or enemy.

But this is Sonic, dude's all about running miles!
That and it's Green Hill zone. The later zones will probably be compacter and more frustrating to navigate through at high speeds

I like it when the protagonist is dwarfed by the environment. It gives that adventurous larger-than-life feeling.
That said, I have no clue what Teev is complaining about. The physics and platforming in that footage of Classic Sonic are almost dead-on accurate. How is this a bad thing?

Really? They look pretty floaty to me. And I see that you can't roll, near the beginning of the video the guy does a spin dash without stopping.
The scenery is pretty, at least. It just makes me sad that Sega have finally started stooping to giving the moronic fanbase what they've been asking for for the last few years - the same game they played in 1991, over and over and over again.

Well, you could always ignore retro Sonic and speedrun through the game Sonic Colors style if that's more your thing. In fact I'm sure that's the reason they've done it like that: make both old skool and next gen camps happy. I guess there's a chunk of people somewhere complaining how there isn't a way to play as it was in Adventure, but those games were pretty crappy anyway so fuck 'em.
