The really interesting innovation with the gamepad is in the multiplayer possibilities. Here we have five-player games in which four players are playing one game on the TV, and one player is playing a completely different game that is still the same game on the gamepad. That's not an experience any other console can offer right now.

Honestly I don't know if "asymmetrical gameplay" is a good idea. In multiplayer people rarely want to be the odd man out. Most games have an equal playing field, where everyone has the same opportunity.
All I can see is people fighting over which role they'll be using.

I've heard nothing but glowing praise of it from people who've had the chance to try it out. It plays on the principles of some of the most basic childhood games. Hide and seek, tag, blind man's buff, Marco Polo... these are all essentially asymmetrical multiplayer games. They're some of the most popular games amongst kids, but playgrounds haven't devolved into fights over them.

Kirbychus wonderful posts about asymmetrical multiplayer games. Really your hit it on the head here, but even more important is this "asymmetrical local multiplayer all in one purchase" (if they already have Wii Remotes), and even better is that 5 player games could potentially go up to 6 player games with thr second gamepad. Imagine what games could happen with 3 vs 3 teams. (Another little note, anyone else heard of the asymmetrical Super Monkey Ball mode in the Wii U version of Sega All Stars Racing Transformed? Gamepad player uses Monkey Ball to run over the other 4 TV players) Also a game idea from Penny Arcade. (God it's fucking hard to search the PA archive for this, had to use Google to find it via this Wii U article) EDIT: Another idea, 5 player Pac Man VS. The only downside to the Wii U though may be when game developers relise, "hey we can just use the internet for asymetrical gameplay" (or even multiple wireless handheld gameplaying devices) but hopefully than Nintendo new online system should be good enough for developers to actually use it.

Those were two good reads. In the UK the first (of many) Wii U TV ad has appeared. Certainly seems to get the important points about the Wii U across.

First US TV ad.
EDIT:
First ad for SiNG PARTY (yes, this is published by Nintendo).
Also guess the song . . .
EDIT 2: Video was pulled but has now been reuploaded.
Anyone one else here willing to comment on these, the US ads are nice, but they could be more focus on that it's a new console (like the UK ad).

Yeah people in the US are going to be confused on what this is. Is it a new console? Or just a new controller. The fact that they don't have many thrilling titles to show doesn't help either.

Clicked the ad expecting to see hipster white people singing gangnam style, left disappointed.

SiNG PARTY tv ad has been reuploaded, so the video in the previous post will work now.
New Super Mario Bros U tv ad.
Nintendo Land
It's nice to see, off TV play being featured in NSMBU, and the 5 player support and "playing across 2 screens" in NL.
But do you know what annoy's me about these ad's? They need to stop featuring kids. People are going to think this is a "kiddy/family" system. If they showed more young adult types playing it, kids/famililes would probably be still interested in buying it.

I dunno about you but if they want to market to kids/families, they are gonna feature kids/families playing games together, not basement dwellers who prefer to play mature online games alone.

What they need is a bit of every group: Kids, young adult types, and older people.
The problem is that too much focus is being placed on the people who don't know what the fuck gaming is.

Areith wearing a BMO shirt seems a little ironic . . . (but than again, other methods would be avalible to watch it, wouldn't they?) In more important news. Friend Codes are DEAD! Each Wii U can up to 12 user ID's profiles instead! Each ID has it's own; - User created account name - Save data - Browser bookmarks - Play history While any purchases made on eShop are avalible for use by any profile. While eShop, browser and MiiVerse will require a day 1 update to obtain.
