I have fortunately not been shaking my 3DS when about to fall into oblivion. Because I'm awesome. Also because I haven't played with my Wii for a while.
So, Mario 3D! It's not bad. It's not on par with Mario Galaxy or NSMBWii, but it's not bad. The levels are a lot shorter than usual (barely a match for NSMBW), and I wish I had a backlog inventory of spare items, rather than just having one extra slot. I want to be able to carry a lot of Boomerang Flowers I can access on the overworld menu, thanks very much >X(
Sad to say though, the game's not as memorable as those to come before it, and the severe dependence it has on all things Mario 3 can get a little bothersome. Woo, I get it, the Leaf Powerup is back, it's not even all that awesome. That's right, I said it. It's like the Cloud Flower, except you can't make clouds. The Cloud Flower was awesome. OHHHH
...but I digress.

The leaf was cool in SMB3 because it allowed you to fly and explore the skies. Now it's just used to prevent you from falling quite so easily.
I must admit, while SM3DL is a good game, it's not great. The extra 8 Worlds you get when you clear the main game are very repetitive, as rather than doing something cool with every level in the main game, you are often playing the same level several times over. And the changes are minor. Only on a handful of levels did I die a lot, and in nearly every case it was due to falling off the levels (often off the FRONT of the levels that are otherwise side-scrolling, which is annoying!)
There were some good ideas, but now I only have to unlock the final level, which is a process as horrible and pointlessly tedious as in Super Mario Galaxy. Beat every level (easy, all done!), get all the Star Medals (easy, all done!), get a Golden Flagpole on every level (sigh), beat every level as Luigi (wtf?!)... This is a tedious replaying of short levels that pose no challenge!
Apparently the final level is worth it. We'll see about that...

It's not all that bad. Each level takes you only about 1.5 minutes (actual time, not in-game timer) to finish, add the cutscene and all it's 2 minutes each, and it's not going to take you more than 3 hours to beat all levels again.
The final level is a big challenge if you play with normal Mario. That level is still easy for Satute Luigi.

The problem is exactly what you mentioned: It won't take long and it won't be hard. So why do I have to do it? I wouldn't mind just getting the golden flagpoles as an extra challenge (as many seem to require you not being Little Mario by the end), but just playing through every level as Luigi again is... Eh...

You HAVE to play through each level as Mario and Luigi? That's...excessive.
Unless you mean the Special World thing. In which case yeah that's pretty awful. The reworked worlds do not fuck around, and I can't find a lot of the star coins D:
Though it's kind of neat that the Blue Leaf turns you into a statue when you ground pound.

I could locate most Star Medals without a guide. Basically, check the stages throughly and keep an eye on the same locations as their normal counterpart when looking for them in special worlds.
There are still a few places where common sense won't lead you to Star Medals. And sometimes they're just inconviently off-screen. Still, I could get at least 280 out of 289 Star Medals by simply checking the stages thoroughly. Pipes, Mystery Boxes, secret paths and so on.
Statue Leaf is broken in the way Stone Kirby is.

I haven't used a guide for Super Mario 3D Land at all. Even when the Star Medal is really well hidden, you know it's got to be before that Star Medal, so you know where to search. And the levels are so short, it doesn't take long to exhaust every possibility.
But it's been set aside now for Pullblox and now 10 GBA games. Shame really. I've been very supportive of the recent wave of Mario games from New SMB onwards - even if they start a bit lame, they always redeem themselves. This one... never really took off for me.

Well, it's not surprising to me if it doesn't appeal as much. Compared to the last main Mario game (SMG2), it's obvious that it doesn't shine as much. Before you know it, the game ends, and there simply isn't anything dramatic in the game. I'm glad that Mario Kart 7 (which is far more replayable, although I loathe its lack of single-player VS mode) took my attention away since then.
So yeah, 3D Land is good, but when it's preceded by SMG1 / New SMB Wii / SMG2, it looks like it's somewhat dull. Personally, I'd complain about its poor camera at times too. The camera often shoots at the stage in ways that only makes sense in 2D platformers, and Nintendo seemed to want to use the whole 3D thing as an excuse. 3D does help, but not much, and I still kept falling off because I'm a tad too far away from the camera without noticing.

I think the 3DS has just proved to me how ineffective 3D graphics are at helping to judge distance. Flying through rings in Star Fox 64 3D was no more intuitive than it was without 3D, and jumping to hit certain blocks or collecting certain items is no easier than it has been since Super Mario 64 (I still use Mario's shadow as a guide).
The 3D is good for producing subtle layering effects and impressive set pieces. This is also helped by the nice, bright, sharp screen resolution. But it has not provided any leaps in gameplay. It hasn't made anything easier or more intuitive (unlike, say, touch screen or motion controls).

You HAVE to play through each level as Mario and Luigi? That's...excessive. This is especially a pain in the ass when you don't get to see the level status if you've beat it as both of them, until you beat the last World 8 level as Luigi (if I remember correctly).

Well, you have to beat S8-Castle first, trigger the "Peach is kidnapped AGAIN" cutscene, and beat W8-Castle2 to make the status visible.
Before that, you can see the status by actually beating the game. If the goal has the other brother's flag, the stage has not beaten. If it shows the current character's flag, there is no way to tell if the other brother has cleared it.
Once that is made visible, you just have to speed run through all stages again, without worrying about the medals or flags if they have been cleared.

Upon reflection I'm not that concerned about which level I've beaten with which brother. I've only beaten a handful of the regular levels with Luigi, and ever since unlocking him in S1-Castle, I've never looked back to Mario. Still, the indicator will be nice.
My only grievance is that Luigi is just a cosmetic change. He doesn't control any differently from Mario, you know?

T_T I thought I had 100%-ed the game by getting all Star Medals and all photos xD I'm almost tempted to watch a video of that level now. Anyway, the (non-?) final stage is so epic, it rivals both Galaxies and NSMBW in my opinion, even though the latter ones are better overall. Also, this needs to happen: SUPER MARIO GALAXY 3 3DS, 1-4 players (I'd call it SMG3DS, but I donno)

Heheh, thanks for digging that up. But, I suppose it could be for the Wii U instead.

Yeah except don't make it Galaxy themed. We're done with that.
But yes a 3D Mario platformer with 4 Players that's not 50% Toads would be awesome.
