Show me where, because I really doubt, say, Pikmin's late release has anything to do with the development of different Miiverse communities or whatever. This is actually being done for Wii Fit U to hold tournaments and the like. That is kinda of the antitheses of what I'm talking about, though - working on Miiverse features as a way to improve a game that will be coming out of it eventually. Its not halting the development of Pokemon Snap U to develop the ability to post a 'YEAH' on people's Miiverse drawings, its using console features to improve how a game works. Heh, I deserve that. It was a cranky, old man rant. It's not necessarily a bad thing that consoles do more than just games. I've never complained that my Wii could use Netflix (which I've used), or that my Dreamcast could play CDs, and I've spent enough money on the Wii Shop to prove that I'm willing to put up with a certain degree of games being tied to a user account (or console, in this case). I'm just saying I miss streamlined simplicity. Before I owned a Dreamcast, I never had to go through a system menu to get to my games. I put a cartridge in my SNES, flipped a switch, and I was good to go. Not that system menus are that big of a deal--it only takes a few extra seconds--but looks where it's gone. Now we have mandatory system updates and user accounts, and that kind of thing creates more chances for things to go wrong. PS3 owners complain about the extra hours it takes for an update to install before they can even start a new game. Then there was the PSN hacking incident a couple of years ago. Microsoft is taking it to an extreme with their DRM policies on the Xbox One, with mandatory installations and tying retail games to user accounts, that are clearly moving things even further away from the "pop a game in and play it" usability that I'm starting to miss. And I think it's possible for a device that most people will probably buy to use as a games console to do too much. To me, it's a bunch of extra clutter that's starting to get in the way. It's getting to be too complicated for my cranky old brain. So, I'll say it again: I miss my toaster. Look, I get it, I really do. My DS and my 360 boot straight to game for the same reasons. I have no idea if you can set up the new gen consoles to do the same or not, but I do get how a lot of these things can slow down this process, and how annoying that could potentially be. I hate stuff that gets in the way of me playing a game when I want to, and this can be a whole range of things - I remember playing a game early in the gen on 360 (Prey? Or Fear? Or something like that) with a good half hour of unskippable cutscenes to kick things off, and it absolutely infuriated me - I wanted to play a game, not watch a poorly written movie. When I finally got to play it, it bored me to tears, and the five minutes of gameplay I didn't enjoy cost me 35 minutes of my life. I hate that shit, too. But some of the criticisms you are making just don't make sense to me. Having games linked to an account is a mybe 5 minute process when setting up your account, and if it allows you to access those games on any device you sign in with your account, thats a GOOD thing. Of course, it doesn't always work like that, but it isn't a bad idea in theory. In fact, its a good one. All I'm saying is, there's a lot to complain about with where gaming is 'these days', and you've certainly hit the nail on the head of a few, but not everything with the new gen is doom and gloom. I'm excited to see where the good aspects of a new gen take us, and E3 should help to show us this, so I'm excited.

I don't mean to sound doom and gloom; that wasn't my intention. It was more my reaction to the Xbox One than anything else. Console gaming still has a lot to offer, it's just going through a transition. I might argue that the Wii U, despite having that Nintendo TVii thing and other stuff, is the only console that's still truly centered around games. (Sony's Kaz Hirai had to make a statement this past week reassuring people that the same was true for the PS4.)
As for user accounts, it's not the process that bothers me. I understand their purpose in terms of downloadable games, but for physical media, it's unnecessary from a consumer standpoint. It's only there for Microsoft/EA/whoever to try to control the secondhand market (and supposedly piracy), and I think it's user-unfriendly. Getting to the point where buying games means having to install them and tie them to a user account seems unnecessary to me.

As a user of the Xbox 360 and an owner of a 12-month Live Gold membership, I have made use of downloading movies and TV shows through their system, mostly because I didn't want to bother with Netflix. I've made good use of these "extra features", but to me, that was merely taking advantage of a side-aspect of the gaming console.
As has been said, I believe that integration with other media and social networks can provide advantages, but it does get absurd at times. I don't think anyone has mentioned Xbox Live having a "Music" panel on the main menu. For those who aren't aware of the layout, the sections of the menu are as follows: Bing, Main Panel, Games, TV/Movies, Music, Apps, System. Might've botched the names, but I remember the purposes. Out of all of them, I have NEVER used "Music" or "Apps". Why in the WORLD would I listen to music from my Xbox - during a GAME, as well- when I already have a laptop and phone that already have all of my favorite music on them? Why would I go to the App panel to get Internet Explorer and Microsoft's iTunes ripoff when I already have a laptop with Chrome for browsing and iTunes, AND when Live already has a music panel!? I've asked what the purpose of it is to a few Live users, who agreed that they're pretty absurd and probably just there because the developers felt it was obligatory.
The Wii U's Nintendo TVii is actually quite interesting to me. It might actually appeal to me, since I never watch TV, and being able to have access to television without paying a cable bill would be splendid, but only as long as the console is still built for gaming. I don't know whether or not TVii carries additional costs of its own, but if it does, I'm guessing it's probably not as big of a fee.

Thought I'd join this discussion and render in my interested thought...processes.
I totally agree with everything DiU has been saying. Consoles now NEED special features to add interest to the non-savvy consumer. It's been said all over after the internet bad-mouthed last year's E3 and the year before that the videogame industry is just that: an industry. It produces items that people will want to buy in order to make a profit. I totally feel that the gaming population has waned tremendously since the 90's when videogames were interactive toys. You weren't playing Donkey Kong Country so much as you were playing WITH Donkey Kong in a world imagined by a team of creative geniuses. Now all games are "realistic"...but I'm getting off topic.
My friends all own Xbox 360's. What got one of them to cave and buy a PS3? It wasn't the fact that the PS3 has way more exclusives than the Xbox, or that the games it has are insanely addicting and fun as hell. No, he bought it because it plays Blu-rays. Having it also play games was considered the added feature.
The Wii U doesn't even play DVD's! People wonder why it's suffering? The general public doesn't care about the games as much as they used to (I blame online play). People owning consoles for the sake of having Netflix and Hulu is also not unheard of.
That's just what I have to say. The Xbox One is going way too far, though. It's destined to fail. I predict that the PS4 will sell like hotcakes after about six months after release. By then Sony will have added some killer app.
This will not be a game, but an actual "app".

I think I'm becoming more of a casual gamer, because a lot of the past hot new PS3(&360) releases didn't interest me in the slightest. Spent less time and money on PS3 games then I thought I would. So unless Sony blows my mind with their E3 reveals, game and feature wise, chances are I'm going with WiiU and PC next gen (even if it means I can't play GTA-V and Darkstalkers for a long, long time ('cause I ain't upgrading shit. Games like Massive Chalice should keep me busy plenty)). Anyway in other news, Sakurai tweeted about there being a Smash Bros video this coming June 11, so I guess we don't have to be so doom and gloom about it being a screenshot slideshow (and I'll bet my lunch it'll be part cinematic/part actual footage much like Brawl's reveal).

I don't know about what TVeye said about realism. If anything, I'm seeing a recent rise in popularity of games that are less realistic, like BioShock Infinite, Persona, Borderlands, etc. Games without realism aren't necessarily dying, IMO. Next-gen graphics definitely provide more opportunity for any point on the scale of realism-vs-fantasy, and unlike what some people think, I feel like just about every point is being taken advantage of to a noticeable degree.

Granted, I play my PS3 more than my Wii, but I mostly only play HD remakes. Out of all the games I've collected every trophy in, 9 (soon to be 10) out of 11 are from HD remakes.

Looks like there's a rumor of a an account system coming for the 3DS (and Hulu Plus too . . .) But my predictions: -Nintendo have said they use the Direct's for showing off games while E3 will allow for hand on experiences with those games. I beilieve Nintendo will start demonstration game that take use of the NFC tech (Like the already unveiled Pokemon Rumble U, but possible more new titles) -Some sort of attempt to combine Wii U NFC figure/cards with the ablity to be recoginised by the 3DS for augmented reality features/games. -Show us a new franchise, something new to make people happy . . . or fuck it, just show more of Monolith Soft's "X" It will do the same thing. -Two gameplad support?/connectivity to the 3DS (using Smash Bros as the major draw here) -More awesome uses of asymetrical multiplayer -Some sort of exclusive Wii U FPS game. -Jam with the band 3DS gets western release? -Show off the indie game support Nintendo has coming up. -Announce more partnerships with other 3rd parties to help make Wii U exclusives. -Curveball, throw in a surprise compliation game for a Nintendo character/franchise having a anniversary (no one expected that Kirby 20th annivsary collection to exist, remember?) This E3 is going to be really weird, Microsoft is going to be digging upwards through the shitstorm it's created, Sony's going to have to make the PS4, not act like a Xbox One and Nintendo just has to get noticed by the mainstream that it's not selling a "Wii accessory" but a new console with new games (that also doesn't act like an Xbox One).

One more day until Nintendo Direct begins. I'm really excited now, especially for 3D Mario.
Like usual, I'll watch Japan's Nintendo Direct. I'll probably get a Wii U no matter what, but 3D Mario will do some good work convincing me. And if that and Mario Kart get released within this year, my game purchase count may rise this year. Previously, I never bought more than 5 games each calendar year except in 2006 (8 games) and 2011 (10 games).
3D Mario is currently a big question mark to us. No one quite knows what major Mario game will they be making, especially since the last two games gave a grand feel with the space theme.
I'm not going to have too much hope for Smash Bros, just to be safe. That said, I really hope they do show something concrete, because otherwise it really will hurt Nintendo's trustworthiness even though they never promised anything other than the game's announcement and game screens. The Internet is known for their blind rage, you know.
I only have two wishes for Mario Kart: Waluigi and GBA Ribbon Road. Mario Kart 7's courses are lovable (Bowser City, Piranha Plant Pipeway), and had some good classic course choices (DS Airship Fortress, DS Waluigi Pinball, Wii Coconut Mall). It seems that the Mario Kart team knows the key to make a good Mario Kart now, so I won't really say anything on the new courses and other aspects.
Other than that, I hope they will shed more light on the barely announced games. Things like Monolith's X, Bayonetta 2 and SMTxFE. And of course, show footages of games that aren't shown, like they did in regular E3s. One hour isn't enough to convey everything.
Now, is there anything I can do to pass the waiting time?

I am real excited, too. I can't wait to see what they have in store for new 3D Mario, Mario Kart U, and especially SSB4. And Nintendo needs to release Pikmin 3 already. Stop teasing. We get it, the game is absolutely gorgeous. I also hope to see more of Yoshi's Island 3DS, Yarn Yoshi, Zelda ALTTP2, Wind Waker HD *hopes for extra content such as more dungeons and more Tingle*, and whatever the hell Retro Studios is working on (is it a new StarTropics game like the rumor claims?) Who do you think might be the first newcomers revealed in the SSB4 trailer? Here are my choices: 1. Little Mac - his series is revived with Punch-Out!! (Wii) and his NES game was released for 3DS (first non-Ambassador NES game) and Wii U (30 cents), Western appeal 2. Takamaru - his series is referred more often lately in post-Brawl games such as Captain Rainbow (cameo), Samurai Warriors 3 (playable guest appearance), and Nintendo Land (attraction), Japanese appeal 3. Palutena - her series is revived with Kid Icarus Uprising, Sakurai worked on that game too, the only NPC to appear in Brawl's Adventure Mode, sex appeal 4. Toad - his species' role is expanded beyond that of a NPC with playable roles in main 2D Mario games (NSMBWii, NSMBU, and NSLU), fan favorite 5. Mii - possibly Nintendo's biggest IP since the Wii came out, COULD be used to show off the new "create-a-fighter" mode if there is one, casual appeal 6. Mega Man - possibly the most-wanted third-party character for SSB4 after Sonic for Brawl, Capcom teased that there would be a big surprise at E3 2013 *crosses fingers* OR 6. Pac-Man - Namco's mascot, Namco is helping Sakurai develop SSB4 Regardless of who might show up, I know my body is NOT ready!

Knowing you, we all know you'd talk about being excited for Smash Bros. Since it has been made known that this new SSB may not be as new character-centric, I expect only about 5 newcomers, as opposed to 10+ in the first 3 games. Maybe only about 2 or 3 of them to be revealed here in E3. Little Mac and Takamaru may both be possible if they want to revive yet more old characters (as if there aren't enough old guys already - come on, give the new ones like Dillon some spotlight!), but Palutena probably won't make it if Ridley can't (size issue, even though certain incarnations of Ridley are Samus-sized). There are many more potential Mario characters than Toad (like Bowser Jr.), and they probably won't want Mii to be involved in violent activities. And Mega Man or other third party characters would likely be the last to show up as Smash newcomer, if Brawl's E3 2006 trailer showed anything. I'd place my bet on Takamaru, because of that old character statement and his appearance in various Wii and U games. There are a few others I want to see in Smash Bros, but more than character changes (I can list about 5), I look forward to gameplay changes and any form of customizability. Custom music, better diorama mode, replays with more than 3 minutes, and so on. And here's a little public announcement. For those who aren't keeping 60-ish tabs opened just to keep track of news, here's where you should look at when the E3 Nintendo Direct starts. NOA: e3.nintendo.com/ (View before E3's commencement for countdown timer) NOE: www.nintendo.co.uk/Misc-/Nintendo-Direct/Latest-Nintendo-Direct/Nintendo-Direct-698557.htmlNCL: www.nintendo.co.jp/nintendo_direct/20130611/index.html (I'll be watching this)

I'll be surprised if Takamaru doesn't show up in the trailer, the way they've been pushing him lately. He'd be the perfect obscure/retro character this installment, much like Pit and Ice Climbers before that. Before the end of this year, basically around christmas. I'd believe that. I thought this year was supposed to be some anniversary for the Earthbound franchise, which turns out to be wrong. Still that one Amazon listing intrigues me... Sakurai tweeted there'd be a trailer, chin up! The only thing I'll predict is that the SSB4 trailer will be great on the character/graphics front, but will also show some character tripping or show off a feature that hints that it won't be a pure 2D plane fighter anymore, which will make people rage and decry this installment as the worst already. Woohoo!

Woohoo! That's awesome! Even though I figured as much, getting acknowledgement that a trailer will be there is still a great relief. I think Sakurai once said that Smash Bros won't go 3D because the 2D style is established as part of Smash's system that everyone is used to, but it's still possible (though unlikely IMO) that fighters can get of that fixed 2D plane to a certain extent. We'll see in 22 hours.
