Based on whose official word, I ask? I just finished explaining that Mario doesn't have an official canon. My source: this magazine

That says "Mario's Biggest Games", not "The Official Canon of Mario". It's merely a listing of the biggest and best-known Mario games there are, not a listing of which games "happened" (e.g. are "canon") and which games didn't. @ Shrikeswind and The Qu: It's very likely that at the time the game came out, "Big-City" was intended to be New York, but it's pretty clear that that was re-written by Donkey Kong Country a few months later, wherein it straight-up tells us DK the First has always been Mario's rival and a resident of DK Isle (mentioned this in original post, btw) and by Donkey Kong Land, which states Mario fought against DK on "Big Ape City". I should probably add the latter to original post, now that I think of it.

- Mario and Donkey Kong were originally stated to have fought in New York City (or "Big City" as per Donkey Kong for Game Boy), but as of Donkey Kong Land they apparently fought in Big Ape City, a territory of DK Isle. I think "Implied" might be a better word there, Manspeed. Unless you have a source saying it was supposed to be New York?

Yeah you're right. I'll fix that.

You know, as soon as I brought up DK '94, I remembered Big Ape City. Just didn't get around to posting it before someone else.
Does that count as getting changed in a Mario game?

I decided it did and promptly added it to the original post. Even though Donkey Kong became its own series starting with Donkey Kong Country, a lot of its background elements are still heavily tied to the games featuring Mario. Yet Cranky has yet to ever even mention Mario by name.

I can just imagine Cranky talking about the Video Game Heroes.
"Now these are REAL video game heroes! You got that dinosaur, the elf guy, and Whatsisname with the mustache."

I like to think Cranky's interaction with Mario would be like something you'd see in the Mario & Luigi trilogy. He'd totally fail to recognize Mario on sight.

A less sassy response would've been appreciated, thanks.

Well, "trilogy" usually refers to a series that was destined to stay at three installments and go no further.

All you had to do was say "I think you forgot the fourth game" and that would've been fine. xP

Okay, but what are you getting so touchy about? Mellow out. You shouldn't let one insignificant comment get to you. And, erm, you haven't provided any evidence that they've dropped the Brooklyn heritage at all. You've mentioned that they haven't talked about it in twenty or so years, whoop-dee-doo. That's not how story works. They haven't mentioned it because there hasn't been a need to mention it. Brooklyn is in the past, the Mushroom Kingdom is in the now. The series evolved, but that doesn't mean its roots never happened. That's like saying "Foreman Spike hasn't been seen in a while, I guess he doesn't exist anymore!" That may be, but it doesn't mean they're going to bring any of it back at this point. They just don't find it necessary anymore.

I feel they rewrote that the current Donkey Kong is and always was the original Donkey Kong from the arcade era. Cranky Kong is not portrayed as the original Donkey Kong from the arcade era in current Donkey Kong games. Mario vs. Donkey Kong games revived the Mario vs. Donkey Kong rivalry while retaining the classic Mario elements like Toads, Shy Guys, etc... and Peach and Pauline can coexist... oh, and Baby DK in Yoshi's Island DS is not Cranky Kong as a baby nor Donkey Kong Jr. but the current Donkey Kong as a baby. After all, Nintendo is the one telling the stories now, not Rare.

After all, Nintendo is the one telling the stories now, not Rare. Actually not the case. Check DK's bio in Mario Superstar Baseball: It states that the current Donkey Kong is not the same ape as appeared in the Arcade games, and as of Donkey Kong Country Returns, Cranky Kong is the currect Donkey Kong's grandfather. As for whether or not Cranky Kong is the original Donkey Kong is still up in the air, but this one hasn't been rewritten. It's just very inconsistent, which, let's be honest, isn't all that different from how it was when Rare was doing the writing.
