FOOD ANALOGIES! SUITLESS SAMUS! OUENDAN!
This thread has it all.
I like your theory, fliptroopa, and I'd agree with it, but I think you are underestimating the potential this has for the Virtual Console. If Sonic appears, more people are likely to want to find out more about Sonic, and will more than likely chuck a few bucks the VC's way in order to have a play through one of the games. Similarly for Bonk, Megaman, etc.
The other one is Pacman - we happen to know Miyamoto loves Pacman so much he went and developed a Pacman game. We happen to know Pacman has already broken through a barrier which we once though was impossible to break into - Mario Kart. And Namco have been pretty damn buddy-buddy with Ninty recently.
I can certainly see Sonic, Pacman, Bonk and Megaman all making it in along with Snake. Thats 5 characters from 5 different companies that have previously, or are currently, helping Nintendo out. And 3 of those characters (Snake, Megaman and Sonic) could move systems, or at least, move SSBB to people that already have the system but might not have considered SSBB. 5 characters, out of, I'm guessing, at least 40. So thats still 35 Nintendo characters, which I think is sufficient if they are ruthless with the clones. However, if I was to bet I'd say we're looking at about 50 characters, actually. Thats 45 Ninty characters. Plenty.
As a matter of fact, if Nintendo actually cracked the 60 character barrier, then each company could throw in another representative, which would still leave Nintendo with 50 spots to fill, whilst allowing some characters that aren't necessarily the company's mascot, but are extremely popular anyways.
Time will tell, I guess.

I think 50 characters is a high-end estimate. I'd like to see that many, but I'm thinking 40. That way, if there's 45, I'll be overjoyed. You guys thinking 50 might feel disappointed with "only" 45. Regardless, I like your 3rd party choices and think they are all fairly realistic. With Hudson signing on for Virtual Console, I wouldn't be surprised if Nintendo is in talks with them, and with Sega making exclusive content for GC, GBA, DS and now Wii, I could see them in talks with the big N too. And I'd LOVE to see Megaman. He would fit right in.

I can see the argument for either side with guys like Sonic and Megaman, but I just don't think it's happening. They're really pushing this newer Sonic on the other consoles, and Capcom completely slapped Nintendo in the face with that whole "exclusive Gamecube games" thing. They are buddy buddy, yeah, but they've done some things in the past few years that make me wonder if Nintendo would bother. But I'm glad you guys aren't arguing for them on account of "BECAUSE THEY WOULD BE COOL AND PEOPLE LIKE THEM" XD I'm so sick of hearing that! And I'm still 90% positive Bonk will appear. I'm not getting my hopes up, no, but.. he's the kinda character they would want to throw in. Definitely. Definitely. And 45 for the final roster It's nice and even.

I'd like to think 45 or even 50 is possible. There were 12 characters with 11 movesets in SSB64. There were 14 new characters (including Sheik), with 8 new movesets in Melee, plus a Luigi partial overhaul. This time around they don't have to design nor overhaul the engine, however they have to design a working online interface. They also have to design new stages, new items and new 1 player modes as always. However they also have a much larger development staff this time- which is still growing- and already have 2 new characters working at least tentatively. They are probably in the midst of designing Zamus and Wario right now, and I think we'll know when they're in fairly good working order by when they show up on the official site. I doubt they'd add characters to the official site without some in-game shots, and I doubt they'd announce the characters without a fairly good grasp of where they're headed. And they are still taking character suggestions... until when? The end of June? I think they'll likely be working on the game for another 11 months... How many more movesets can they finalize in 11 months all of that considered? Hell, I don't know. All I know is ^^^that^^^ is everything you have to consider when guessing at character amounts. I'd like to think they could do 12 more, which plus another 6 clones would be 45 characters, and I think would feel pretty impressive to play.

So... because Sonic Team made ONE Sonic game that's not coming out for Wii, and Capcom are making their games multi-format, we can't expect Sonic or MegaMan to appear? Sounds silly to me. Don't forget, we're getting a Wii-exclusive Sonic game, too. Plus, pretty much the entire MegaMan Battle Network series is available only on Nintendo consoles.

I don't think Capcom or Sega are playing the field more than KONAMI for God's sake.
By the way, they WOULD be cool and people DO like them.

woah, woah. I didn't say they weren't cool and nobody liked them. Christ -_-;; I grew up on Sonic and Megaman, don't persecute me. I still play their games today.
I was just trying to look at it from a different angle, and I apologize sorely to anyone offended by it. I'll stop talking.

I don't think anyone was offended... I just think your reasoning was strange, since Snake is in, and most of his games are Playstation-exclusive... by comparison, Sonic and MegaMan have a hell of a lot more Nintendo involvement. Sonic Adventure 2: Battle, Sonic Advance 2 & 3, Sonic Battle, Sonic Rush and Sonic Wild Fire are all Nintendo-exclusives. And are there any MegaMan Battle Network games that aren't exclusive to either GBA, GC or DS? (That's a real question. I'm fairly sure, but not entirely) Then Snake has... Metal Gear, Snake's Revenge, Twin Snakes... I think that's all? Oh, wasn't there a GBC version of Metal Gear Solid, too? I dunno, I'm not a big Metal Gear fan...

But Snake was explained away, which is why I'm not as worried about that. My main point was to look at it from a developer relationship stance. And no, for the most part, Megaman: BN games are Nintendo handheld/Cube exclusive. However, there are BN games for Wonderswan, and Megaman.exe is a playable character in a Onimusha fighting game for PS2. Regardless, if any Megaman gets in, it's classic Megaman Screw all those other copycats And back to Snake: He's been on mostly Sony systems, but Kojima regrets that. And, again, buddies with Sakurai, wants to make a ton of Wii games, and really loves Nintendo personally.

fliptroopa, Offended? Not at all, haha. I was just being silly, sorry if you got the wrong impression. I'll try to use more of these: Anyways, I hope a game's creator does not have to be buddies with Sakurai in order for the character to get in the game... Not that that is what you're saying... but Nintendo has said they "may be" in talks with other companies for more 3rd party characters, and I personally can't think of what those companies might be other than those mentioned so far... Maybe the specifics of the Snake deal were worked out faster because Kojima and Sakurai are friends, but I don't think from a business or development standpoint that Konami were/are in better standing with Nintendo than were Sega, Capcom, etc.

No, Konami's President actually thinks Nintendo is kiddie, despite them being one of the GBA's biggest supporters.
Which is why I think Kojima had a really profound influence on the whole Snake thing overall.

Captain Olimar(Pikmin) - Hell yes. Has to happen. Lip (Panel de Pon) - I'd love to see her. Plus she's another female character, which is good. Ike (Fire Emblem) - Damn Fire Emblem. Can't say nothing about Fire Emblem. Black Knight (Fire Emblem) - Yeah, FE again. Toad (Super Mario Bros. 2) - Not bad, but not great, either. Lolo and Lala (Kirby) - I don't know these guys, either, but I don't think we need another duo character unless they are significantly different to the Ice Climbers in how the partnership works. I don't think this will be. Simon Belmont (Castlevania) - Seems like the obvious Konami representative, but we've already got Snake. hmmm..... Ray 01 (Custom Robo) - Custom Robo characters sound like a good idea to me. Princess Katia (Lost Kingdom) - Who? From Where? Sukapon(Joy Mecha Fight) - Once again, who? (attacked by Ninty DB fanboys) The lists are looking quite nice, there are some really cool characters in both. Now we just need Tom Nook and Captain N (yeah... that'll happen.... )

There seems to be a good amount of 3rd party mentioned. I just hope we can have Snake and be done with it. I wouldn't mind Megaman much, but can we stop there Sakurai./ The only characters left to be on the list is Diddy Kong; then Im happy.
