Sakurai wouldn't look at the poll like that. It's more like "Which characters should I add from the Mario franchise. Bowser Jr. isn't that interesting, but Geno sounds cool. A lot of people seem to like him. Let's go with him"

Remember that the number is how many times Sakurai commented on that character.

Actually how many times he posted one of their requests. The only comments he made were after every 50 requests, where he would respond to the last one in the 50 letter list for the day. Usually these were technical questions or non sequitirs, like: "What controller do I use," "Will everybody be unlocked from the getgo," "Is Link going to talk," "I loved Melee. Thank you for making Brawl!," and other pointless crap nobody really cares about or is too obviously easily answered. He not once commented on any new or mentioned characters on the poll, only ones who were revealed (though he made fun of a guy who kept calling "Kinopio" (Toad) the name "Pinocchio." He also made some edgy remark about how a "real live black man" sent him a comment [the author said he was from Africa or somewhere similar]).

I should mention too that the Toukoken had a TON of requests for returning vets, and basically everybody from Melee was mentioned at some point. But remember that because Sakurai, or at least somebody working for him, is sifting through these and bothering to post them online (and edit them, because I really doubt some of these were one sentence long like they appeared)... there is some validity to the fact they were posted, if anything but interest in the comments. It's one thing to read a comment that goes: "I really liked the game Fire Emblem. Will we see the Black Knight appear in the game? That'd be great." Compare that to some of the lengthier ones that say: "I really hope that you include characters from the game Tomato Adventure. It was by Alphadream and it was a lot of fun. I think Demiru would work great as a character. His attacks could be

I'd like to point out that Pokemon Trainer trumped the Brawl Poll™ because he was on the Melee Poll™. Lucas also trumped the Poll™ because he was planned for SSB from the Get-go... His game just had to come out for it to happen. And Sonic, who was pretty much the question everyone was ASKING Nintendo about. Everyone else had been the ones with the most comments on the Brawl Poll™. Dedede and Diddy were on both polls, and since everyone on the Melee poll is in, it exhausted its usefulness in educated guessing. I'm not saying everyone mentioned more than once on the Poll™ will get in as a fighter, just that Geno, Ridley, Krystal, Olimar, and Takamaru have more of a chance of being playable for this game, especially since we KNOW Krystal is SOMEWHERE in the game, and Ridley HAS to be a part of Subspace Emissary. There is also at least one other franchise in Brawl, because of the space between Kid Icarus and Sonic the Hedgehog, and quite frankly, that's probably represents either Pikmin or Nazo no Murasamejou.

And again we point to Sakurai's random mumblings throughout the years, both for Melee and Brawl. He wanted Bowser and Peach in 64. We know he wanted Dedede, Wario, and Lucas in Melee. And what happened? They ended up in the series later down the line. Takamaru has actually been discussed--Sakurai gave a little blurb about him on the old Melee site. And what did he say? "I'd love to include the character, but let's wait until he gets a new game." And what happened? The GBA re-release and a resurge of interest in the title.

Sakurai listens.

I reviewed the same two DeMille requests, and noticed that not one, but BOTH requests told Sakurai to make DeMille's Final Smash move be the Tomato Robot MK. II. This still makes DeMille less likely at appearing in SSBB as a playable character. However, this can cause Sakurai to make DeMille use that move while being an Assist Trophy. Now the only special or historical thing about Tomato Adventure I could think of is that it was the first (and only original) AlphaDream title published by Nintendo. Koto Battle was AlphaDream's first title, but it wasn't published by Nintendo.

Perhaps Sakurai can add a character that has been mentioned at least twice in the SSBB poll, because I have a feeling that the Animal Crossing MC will become a playable character, not only because it was mentioned twice in the SSBB poll, but also due to any town you live in being nameable in the Animal Crossing series, it was named "Smashville" in SSBB, and while the Animal Crossing MC is also nameable, it can be named something like "Smasher" or "Smash Brother / Smash Sister". There are more Animal Crossing MCs than any other in one town. I know there are more Totakekes / K.K. Sliders, Tom Nooks, Resettis, and other kinds of people like them, but you can't see more than one of them in one town.

Two of the Takamaru entries:
#165 - "Nazo no Murasamejou was a good game, that'd be fun to see," basically. There are a lot of other suggestions in there too.
#71 - mentions the greatness of the FDS. He talks about Pit, Castlevania, and gives some time to Nazo. Says it's his favorite game, that he loves the music and the gameplay, and that although Takamaru is kind of lost to time he would be an amazing character to have in Smash because of his swordskills and shock value. That's... what I can gather.

This stuff is so thick and hard to get through, though. I can't find any of the Geno entries, of which there is one in the first five or so groupings. Oy...

EDIT 2:

Found the first Geno entry. It's number 14.
#14 - The guy, HiGe, says that Mario RPG is his favorite game and that Sakurai having yet to represent it seems to upset him. He basically says it was a great game and that Geno would be a fun character because of the finer points he plays in the plot (being a soulless doll to the sad ending, apparently).
#86 - An anecdote: his favorite game as a youth was Mario RPG, and he still plays it today as a high schooler. And his favorite character was Geno. He says that he has the skills and charm to be a great character.
#268 - Requests Geno because he's a well-loved character (mentions the 10 years since RPG). Says RPG was memorable for its setting and music more than anything. Rest of entry is about other stuff, like how great the Ice Climbers were in Melee.
#247 - He goes: "You said to say what we truly wanted, so 'Put Geno in already!'" No lies.

I could've sworn there was an entry asking for Beware the Forest Mushrooms and the Forest Maze as a stage, but I bet I missed it since I was just doing a scan for Geno.

Maybe Chocobo could be a better Square Enix representative than Geno because the bird would represent the Final Fantasy franchise as opposed to the doll representing the Mario franchise.
