Smashchu, after a little look on VGChartz (since I know you trust it so much), it seems Mario RPG did sell over 2 million. However, that hardly compares to Mario 64's 11 million, SMW's 20 million or even Sunshine's damn near 6 million. 2 million is a very, very small number in comparison. Hardly "more than the best selling Mario game."
Mario RPG is not a popular or even well-known game. If Geno gets in, he's just there as fanservice to a tiny minority. If he's in, why not Vivian? Why not Waluigi? Why not Shadow the Hedgehog? AND THE FLOODGATES ARE OPEN!

If that's true, then yes, it has sole more than any Paper Mario game, BUT! sales don't necessarily count in the long run. Mario Tennis sold more than Mario RPG, so should Birdo be a character? How about Paratroopa? Or Boo? When it all gets down to it, characters are based on popularity, and how well known they are, and don't give me that "Mr. Game & Watch wasn't well known" or "Ice Climbers weren't well known". Do you have any idea how many times the G&W games have been remade? Or even how many times it's been referenced in games like WarioWare? And speaking of WarioWare, Ice Climbers have also been featured in it.Mario RPG has had no actual sequels, it has not been ported to the GBA (Like Ice Climbers and Kid Icarus, which BTW had a sequel), and all the original characters in it (Mallow, Geno, Axem Rangers) have not been featured in anything else, except for Geno's cameo appearance in M&L:SS.

Super Mario RPG sold more than pretty much every franchise represented in Smash, except the Mario, Zelda, Pokemon, Donkey Kong Country, Metal Gear Solid series, and Sonic 1, Sonic 2, and Starfox 64. It's also the second best-selling of the Mario RPG line. (Super Paper Mario sold only a few thousand more than Super Mario RPG)
Besides, we've already got references to Mario Kart and the Mario Sports games in Smash, the Mario RPGs NEED representation also! And what better representation, than the Mario RPGs' most popular side-character, which IS Geno!

Super Mario RPG sold more than pretty much every franchise represented in Smash, except the Mario...series... Um...I though Super Mario RPG was in the Mario franchise? Look, this whole argument is silly. Who said anything about having a Mario RPG (not just Legend of the seven stars, but also Paper Mario, M&L:SS, etc.) character present in Brawl? The only Mario character that has a chance is Bowser Jr. Case closed. End of story. Fin. The end. And they lived happily ever after.

I'm getting to the point of just blowing all this shit off, because if we've learned anything (and nobody seems to be listening) it's that anything is fucking possible. Geno has just as a much a chance as Jr. to appear. THAT'S the end of the story. If Sakurai gives us Pokemon Trainer and Game and Watch, he's obviously going to be pulling characters from all over the damn place. Geno is just as good a selection as Jr., and that's my whole frigging argument. Alright? Fin.
Btw, Wario Ware wasn't out until AFTER Melee. Melee catalogued the N64 era because it was more or less a late launch title for the Cube. Do your research. Ice Climbers and all those others are only popular now BECAUSE of Smash Bros.

Geno has just as a much a chance as Jr. to appear. THAT'S the end of the story. If Sakurai gives us Pokemon Trainer and Game and Watch, he's obviously going to be pulling characters from all over the damn place. Bad examples. Pokemon Trainer is, in actuality, the main character in Pokemon, and it's about time he got some recognition in the SSB franchise. And Mr. Game & Watch? Well, I'll go over that later. Alright, fine. Warioware came out after Melee. But that doesn't mean anything against my argument of how G&W has appeared in constant remakes (Game & Watch Gallery series) and Ice Climbers has been released in arcades, NES/Famicom, and Famicom Disk System. Then after Brawl, it was on E-readers, Gameboy Advance, and WarioWare. Super Mario RPG isn't even on virtual consoles yet. You may say Sakurai picks things randomly, or whatever, but from what I can tell, he doesn't.

Ice Climber was over 20 years old when Melee came out--it was pretty much forgotten. How many of us REALLY knew the game, or many of the others like it, existed until Melee? Truthfully?
And how about Ness in SSB64? He was in ONE game. One measly game. The series had two titles, but only one ever got into the US and it was a cult hit at best. Earthbound has yet to see a remake or re-release on any medium, and the sequel is completely ignored outside of Japan. Ness was only in the game because Sakurai wanted him in the game, despite being completely unknown and only present in a single game. Don't tell me Earthbound is above Super Mario RPG in fanbase and hype.

Also, MOTHER 3 was going to be an n64 game, Sakurai found it fine to add Ness, but we all know how that turned out...(MOTHER 3 as an N64 game...)

EB64 was going to star Lucas/Claus and Flint, though. Ness I think was added because Sakurai worked for HAL on all of the Mother games--there was a connection. No, he didn't work on Mario RPG, but there are some people on the development team that have.
Yoko Shimomura is working on Brawl for the music, and she's credited as doing "Kingdom Hearts" in the big list 'o musicians. But what else has she done? None other than the music for "Super Mario RPG" and "Superstar Saga." What's funny about this more than anything is that musicians are being revealed all the time as part of the list, including Jun Senoue and Hirokazu Tanaka. Whose to say they haven't listed her as "Super Mario RPG" yet because of something special yet to be unveiled? Afterall, it already says "Kingdom Hearts," so it has nothing to do with getting permission from Square-Enix to list her credits. I don't mean to get everyone worked up or start a mass conspiracy, but there's significance to the placement of her name. She's actually worked for Nintendo before, so it's silly to not list it unless Sakurai is planning something.

Jesus christ people are looking for conspiracies in every single little thing now.
Maybe she was listed as doing 'Kingdom Hearts' because people will actually know what that game is, unlike Mario RPG. Or, better yet, because thats what they felt like listing her for. No, wait, that would be too simplistic.
And regarding Earthbound vs Super Mario RPG, its a fair enough point if you just consider those two games, but SMRPG is both part of a much larger franchise with a bunch of reoccurring characters that need to be in, whereas Earthbound is part of a franchise of 2 games with a new cast in each game. Ness is also the main character of that game whereas Geno is part of the cast, and definitely not the main character.
Its not the same.

Yes, it was suppose to say "Paper mario" not just "Mario". SMRPG outsold all the Paper Mario games, despite being in two regions. Super Mario RPG sold more than pretty much every franchise represented in Smash, except the Mario...series... The only Mario character that has a chance is Bowser Jr. Case closed. End of story. Fin. The end. And they lived happily ever after. Now hold on just a minute there. Have we not learned anything. Genop has a very large and dedicated fan base. The game he was in has beaten ever Fire Emblem and every Mother/Earthbound title, and can contend with F-Zero. Bowser Jr. plays a large role in the franchise but lacks the popularity, and is more hated then loved. Bowser Jr stands a chance but it will come down to how Sakurai wishes to progress with the franchise. So "End of Story" is far from adequate. I really just wanted to say that. If you guys want to wrap this up, be my guest.

Yeah, there's really nothing we can say now that won't piss someone off. Let's just wait until Brawl is released, and have Sakurai be the guy to piss us all off by adding Smithy as a playable character. Which actually, wouldn't be that bad...

He could use Sledge, and you'd have to fight Smelter to weaken him first. EDIT: And nobody else is disturbed by the fact that Smash is a Nintendo game that lists all these composers, and they ignore citing that one of them did Mario music? That isn't strange to any of you? I understand that Kingdom Hearts is the well-known work for the composer, but you would think that a Nintendo game would list Mario musicians. If they're listing Mario Party and Mario Golf in the credits, Mario RPG is just the same. Hence my theory. If anything, it's music. But there's something. Peach has her damn frying pan, after all.

Ice Climber was over 20 years old when Melee came out--it was pretty much forgotten. How many of us REALLY knew the game, or many of the others like it, existed until Melee? Truthfully? I have a crapton of good memories playing that game. While reading some preview of Melee talking about Ice Climbers I did forget about them and I first thought they added a bunch of waverace-like realistic characters from a mountain climbing game or whatever, but then I saw the picture and I was all OHSHlT it's them eskimoes . Even though I like 'em I'm pretty sure that if the Ice Climbers did not show up playable in Melee, they would be an AT in Brawl. Anyway guys 1 more month, let's wait and see who Sakurai picked out instead of endless argueing..
