Whoa . . . this is one hell of a rumor . . . And it comes from the same French website that leaked the early Wii U and PS Vita news. English translation from NeoGAF.Supposeldy Nintendo will make detachable right analog stick dongle for the 3DS, and possibly relaunch next year with new name . . . Sounds like it could be real, but I remember the whole reason why the 3DS has gyro support was that it could used as a second analog stick.

New 3DS, blah blah, whatever. So long as it's more like a DSi than a whole new generation (and turning 3DS into Virtual Boy 2), I'm fine.
I fear that developers fear making 2D games on 3DS though. After all, some games simply don't translate well to 3D.
And I'm not going to entirely agree with them. The fear of 3D is one thing, bu I'd also quote the lack of games and the fact that it isn't Wii (no full motion control) to be reasons that it doesn't sell well. But then, Nintendo isn't advertising enough that 3D isn't the only thing 3DS is about; so that's a problem too.

I have not bought a 3DS. I can only speak for myself, so this is coming from someone who is "in the know" and isn't naive about what the 3DS is and isn't. The main reasons are as follows:
1) Price. US$250 was just way too much, and I don't have that kind of cash to throw around. Nintendo has addressed this, so that helps, but...
2) Lack of software that would warrant the purchase of a whole new system. There are very few games on the 3DS that I'm compelled to want to play, and the already tiny list is dwindling. Nintendo has not addressed this for me, as I see no reason to spend $170 for a whole new system, plus $40 for a remake of a 13/14-year-old game that I already own and have played enuff. And sadly, Mario doesn't sell systems for me anymore. Third-parties have not helped, either.
3) A distant third, but apparently the battery life is terrible. This seems to go against Nintendo's usual user-friendly designs, and it gives the impression that maybe the system wasn't thought out that well.
To go along with that, the 3DS seems like a little bit of a mess. It seems to me that it's a bunch of different technologies mashed together without any real focus or intent. For instance, it has 3D, but also gyro sensors that mess up that 3D. It's as if Nintendo just decided to throw in everything but the kitchen sink, but didn't really put any thought into how to unify it.
To be honest, it's like Nintendo thought that the mere existence of the system, as well as the mere existence of Zelda, Star Fox and Mario, would be enuff to excite fans like me, and that feels a little presumptuous.
Actually, I want to want a 3DS, but... so far, there isn't really anything there for me to want.

3) A distant third, but apparently the battery life is terrible. This seems to go against Nintendo's usual user-friendly designs, and it gives the impression that maybe the system wasn't thought out that well. I can only speak from my own experience here, but... when I first got my 3DS I used it quite a lot and didn't need to charge it once until day 3. I wasn't on it all day or anything, but I got a decent number of hours out of it before the light turned red, and I only actually powered the system off entirely at night. If there's a problem with battery life, it certainly isn't bad enough that I've ever noticed it. Of course, people said the same about the regular DS' battery life when it first came out, and I never noticed a problem there either. I can't see that rumour being true, personally. The 3DS' whole motion control thing has been so great for controlling camera movement so far, there's really no need for a second stick. The Wii never had one, so it's obviously not as essential as that guy says it is.

On the one hand, this sounds like nonsense. For a start the 3DS has two major problems:
1. It still had hardly any games. 2. It's not a smartphone.
The third problem, the steep price tag, is no longer a problem. However, now the hardware is reasonable, the software needs to be flexibly priced too. For £40 I would expect an RPG, a huge Zelda game, etc. I am not happy paying that for Steel Diver or Nintendogs...
Regardless of the press, the 3DS screen is a lovely bit of kit that shows some amazing handheld graphics. It's sharp, bright, crisp and the 3D effect can be amazing. It's really odd going back to the ugly ol' DS screen now. Just as odd as going back to a GBA or classic Game Boy.
And dual sticks is a priority now? Dual stick controllers provide 2 analogue inputs for traditional gaming. But the 3DS already has an analogue control nub + touch screen. Oh wait, and the gyroscope... So that's three analogue inputs! What benefit would a fourth bring?
I'm baffled. it's a silly rumour.
However, considering that the new model Wii is the same size as the old model Wii but without the GameCube ports or the plastic stand, one has to wonder what Nintendo's up to! I mean... Were those really the elements that brought up Nintendo's manufacturing costs? Reeeeally?! Nintendo is playing a strange game. It smacks of panic to bad press. And that makes me sad.
Don't cave Nintendo! You've weathered worse times than this!

Just as I suspected it to be: an add-on. I wonder how conflicting it'll be with those expanded batteries packs. Chances are you either use one, of the other.
And am I the only one who thinks that Monster Hunter on a portable console is a huge waste of potential? Not that I wouldn't buy it, but gaaaah. Or heck, am I the only one who actively plays Monster Hunter (Tri) on this forum?

And let me guess, the "3DS Lite" would come out with the second analog embedded? Super Mario Sunshine 3D confirmed.

I highly doubt Iwata will lose his job. Nintendo no doubt still have more money than they know what to do with.
3DS looks like a freakin' Game Gear with that thing attached.
