This is such a complex subject. First of all, I really hope the thing in that picture is an early mockup, as it looks hideous. If I wanted to own a hideous piece of ass, I'd have kept my original model DS *ba-dum-tshh!*
I've said it before, but the Nintendo 3DS problems are that it was too expensive (now fixed), it isn't a phone (no imminent fix) and it has no software (hurry up Christmas!)
After getting to play some of the upcoming games at a recent event I can honestly say the 3DS has a major issue with controls. Super Mario 3D Land, Kid Icarus and Luigi's Mansion all controlled like ass. They weren't unplayable, but they were all very awkward, not at all easy to pick up and play, and just eehhhhh....
This leads on to Nintendo rushing the 3DS hardware. This is wrong. Nintendo possibly released it before having any software ready, but the hardware is great. It's a DS with a slide pad that works nicely. If you want to play DS-style games. 90% of which were 2D, and many of those were very simple.
But we're in 3D territory now. People want to play FPSs and epic 3D adventures on that lovely screen. And developers want to make these games and are struggling to fit the controls to the system. 3D games on the DS just didn't take off, but the system was home to some very good 2D and it lived on that.
So perhaps Nintendo should have foreseen this and created controls for the 3DS that could meet the requirements of modern FPS and adventure games. Of course they should have done. Did they really expect anyone to get excited about Big Brain Academy 3D?
And that's what this is. An admission that the DS controls are unsuited to the kind of games that work best with a 3D screen. Namely 3D games.
Will it fix the controls in the games I mentioned above? I genuinely think, if the option is there, then yes.
Will this mean a new model of 3DS within a year? I believe so. And I believe it will be called Nintendo 3DS Duo. Will I have to replace mine? Unless I want this godawful-looking contraption sticking out of it, then yes, I expect it will be one of the few system redesigns that would be a worthwhile purchase. But I would do so grudgingly.
Worst of all, this fixes a problem that we haven't even been given a chance to discover as a problem yet. Maybe if we had some 3D games that perhaps could have worked better with a second slide pad and then Nintendo announced one then that would be different. But this hasn't happened. We have no games. This has been the problem since day 1. The fact the only reasons I have to play my DS since beating Zelda have been StreetPass Quest and NES games is quite sad actually.
It's a system being treated for obesity while dying of malnutrition. Somebody call Doctor House!
