www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=453368So, what do we think? Legit? Too Legit? Too Legit to Quit? I'm interested to see how Sony pushes this. Smash Bros, from a gameplay perspective, isn't exactly mainstream, it just gets a massive boost from having super recognisable characters like Mario, Pikachu and Donkey Kong. Can Sony pull that off successfully? Back in the day with Crash, Spyro and Lara Croft acting as poster children then I'm sure they could, but now? Is there going to be enough people that desperately want to see Nathan Drake and Sly Cooper battle it out to make this endeavour worthwhile? ....at the very least, you guys will be able to replace your 'OMG MEOWTH FOR SSB4' posts with 'OMG THOSE SONY MASCOT CATS FOR SONY SMASH BROS'. So enjoy that.

I assume by "you guys" you mean "Arcadenik" since he was like Meowth's No.1 proponent on here. Whatever the case, all I need is Crash and Spyro and I'm good.

Wouldn't be the first time someone has tried to imitate the Smash Bros. formula. The thing with Smash Bros. is that aside from the fan service, there's a solid game underneath. If Sony is able to make a fun, compelling game, then Sony fans will likely enjoy it. But content-wise, IMHO, the only other company that rivals Nintendo with its large back-catalog of appealing mascot-type characters is Sega, and so far, they've only used them in tennis and racing games.

While I'll agree that Sony is definitely far behind Nintendo and indeed Sega in having an appealing roster, they've certainly got a lot to draw on, and judging by the characters mentioned so far, it looks like they're willing to dive into some good territory to get there, which is promising. If they can indeed get the Playstation mascots of old - your Crash Bandicoots, your Spyros, your Lara Crofts - etc in there, plus a little bit of third party support (I'm sure Snake will be ready for another go around. Hell, Sega would probably be happy to whore out Sonic some more if you really wanted to share both of Brawl's guests) I think you can probably get a nice diverse roster with a bit of mainstream appeal. Not Smash Bros level of mainstream appeal, but enough to give it a bit of a boost. EDIT: Also James Bond is a brilliant WTF, yet in fact a completely great idea with lots of mainstream appeal, character for a Sony crossover game.

What's really bizarre about this whole situation is the employee who put up all this info online about the game (with some pictures). Destructoid mentioned that who did this is "risking their current employment and future career" by posting said info.
Even weireder is how he compares certains characters fighting styles to Smash Bros characters, (eg Kratos will fight like Pit! WTF?)
I'm starting to wonder if this is some sort of Sony stealth advertising/hype machine/anti Smash Dojo like updates.
EDIT: Remeber all those years ago, when the Japanese got to nomimate characters for SSB and JB 007 and 006 (Goldeneye) were on the list? Oh what irony it is now . . .

The irony is that Crash, Spyro and Lara Croft are all third-party. But yeah, Sony's got their own gang of recognizable characters.

I want CLASSIC Crash and Spyro. Lessee, Cole McGrath, Sackboy, Patapon, Sir Daniel Fortesque, Lemming (possibly in a group controlled by an Olimar type character), Spike from Ape Escape, Jak & Daxter and Ratchet & Clank are for sure participants...

Apparently it's going to have around 20+ playable characters, but most if not all of them will be main characters of different franchises. Which is good because having a bunch of sackboys or fat princess classes playable would be hella lame
In the end it's all about the gameplay though. That TV Dream whatever the fuck had a kickass roster of characters, but plays like a turd.

BUMP! www.gametrailers.com/episode/gametrailers-tv/152?ch=1First footage of PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale. . . . it's really looks like it plays like SSB . . . a 2.5D fighting game with Sony characters. No %, but some sort of power meter and a timer at the bottom centre of the screen. Most interesting thing appears to be other Sony characters appearing on other characters stages, Eg A GoW stage (with Hades) has Patapon throwing spears at him.

On the one hand it looks fun! On the other... that's because it IS Smash Bros.! I have no particular fondness for the PlayStation though. I've played only a tiny handful of the represented games and so have no nostalgia for anything on show here. The games I enjoyed on it, and many of the most iconic titles on the system, were almost always third party titles. And so while I wish the Sony fans all the best with their new Smash Bros., I can't muster much enthusiasm for it myself. Unless they get the Ico kid in there. There's a whole cavalcade of companies who could fill a roster for a Smash Bros. game. Nintendo, Sega, Capcom, Konami, Square Enix, Namco Bandai... Hudson and Taito have been merged into that lot as well. So plenty of scope for more ripoffs in the future

Looks pretty rad. I admit the screens didn't really do it for me as Sony characters don't really interest me as much as... well, characters from any of the companies Fry mentioned really . BUT seeing it in action certainly gives off that fluid, fast paced Smash Bros vibe. Combining two franchises for each stage setting is interesting too. I'll probably buy this
